(Maybe it helps that we sometimes offer them as premiums to our mailing list!) One ques- tion we keep getting askedSample is, “Who’s filethe editor?” The MEGAPACK™ ebook series (except where specifically credited) are a group effort . Everyone at Wildside works on them . This includes John Betancourt (me), Carla Coupe, Steve Coupe, Shawn Garrett, Helen McGee, Bonner Menking, Colin Azariah- Kribbs, A .E . Warren, and many of Wildside’s authors…who often suggest stories to include (and not just their own!) RECOMMEND A FAVORITE STORY? Do you know a great classic science fiction story, or have a fa- vorite author whom you believe is perfect for the MEGAPACK™ ebook series? We’d love your suggestions! You can post them on A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER | 5 our message board at http://movies .ning .com/forum (there is an area for Wildside Press comments) . TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

Carter's mystery debut (she previously wrote? paperback romances) is not for those with queasy stomachs. Biographer Miranda Fay gets a sickening jolt when her dog noses out a horribly deformed fetusaren't all fetuses deformed, or unformed? yes, unformed, but not deformed --a "mooncalf"--hidden in a grocery bag. Miranda has just separated from her husband, and is searching for diversion. Writing a series of investigative articles for the local paper gives her a wonderful excuse to pry into the sordid life and grisly death of Valda, the mooncalf's mother, a junkie who expired during an illegal abortion. Valda and Miranda are distantly related and so, it turns out, are several other women who have been impregnated by the father of Valda's misbegotton babe, a shadowy monster who rapes and sodomizes his victims.

John wanders the mountains on foot as an itinerant folk singer of the old songs (his nickname comes from his guitar strings made of silver --- a substance that also repels some supernatural nasties --- but he's also known as a "witch-master," that is, a kind of paranormal troubleshooter whose lore and skills render him "master over" and able to defeat the sinister sorcery of witches and "ha'nts." His variety of supernatural adventures bring him to face with time travel, revenants, various monsters of regional folklore such as the "Behinder," and other macabre phenomena. LOWNDES MAGAZINES FOLD! THE MAGAZINE OF HORROR, BIZARRE FANTASY, STARTLING MYSTERY, and EXPLORING THE UNKNOWN, all published by Health Knowledge, have ceased publication. Robert A.W. Lowndes, the line's resourceful editor, has been let go by the company. THRILLING WESTERN, another fiction magazine, had recently had its last round-up. • The Lowndes magazines had been cursed with abysmal distribution throughout their existence and the fact that they have been suspended is not as surprising as the fact that they con tinued as long as they did. ULTIMATE ON THE ROPES? Though the ax hasn't fallen yet, Ultimate Publications, pub lishers of AMAZING, FANTASTIC, and a host of reprint titles "edited" by FOCAL POINT'S own Arnie Katz is experiencing difficulties. Chief stumbling block is distribution, the perenial bugaboo of small-circulation magazines. The latest hassle is that a new distribution combine is forming on the West Coast, and Ultimate has been informed that it will henceforth have no comprehensive distribution on the Coast for its reprint titles.

For some, it is any aspect of culture that is aimed at and appreciated by a large segment of a society. Some conceive of it as inherently unsophisticated, standing in opposition to higher forms of culture. Others consider it to be necessarily commercialized, and primarily existent to make money. Some have even referred to it as culture which reflects the genuine concerns and ideas of the general public. It is often associated with members of the lower classes, and its manifestations tend to be mass- produced. This collection specializes in items such as comic books, graphic novels, and science fiction, while also housing tabloid newspapers, cult magazines, realia, and more. Comic Books, 1964-current Pinpointing the precise origin of the comic book would prove a difficult task. Given the ambiguous definition of the medium (typically defined as a form of storytelling characterized by sequential images, often accompanied with text), precedents can be found throughout history. Examples of such include newspaper comic strips. However, the modern comic book is said to have begun in the United States in the early 1930s. From here, and especially following the success of Superman, first introduced in 1938, the medium has exploded in popularity and notable works have been published in Japan and Europe.
