Jesus Christ.

Lesson Instructions
1. For the last few weeks we have been learning the books of the Bible and
what they are about. Can any of you name the books we have learned so far?
Genesis and Exodus. Can you find them in your Bible?
2. Today we are going to learn the third book of the Bible. That book is called
Leviticus. As with the other two books we have learned, this one gives us an
illustration or picture that represents how Christ saves His people from
their sins. This book is no exception. Can you find the book of Levitius? Find
the very first chapter and verse and point to it for me. As you read this
book you would will read 1. That God demands a sacrifice. 2. How unholy

people can come to a holy God. 3. About the priest and how the priest goes to
God with prayers and sacrifices in atonement for the sins of the people. 4.
That God’s people are restored to God and made holy through the sacrifice.
3. I just used a bunch of words that you have probably never heard. In
learning what each of these statements mean, we will learn the meaning of
Leviticus. Here is what happened. (High Priest Illustration)God appointed a
man named Aaron to be the spokeman, the mediator between his chosen
people, Israel and Himself. This man was called the great high priest. Only
Aaron and his sons could be priests. Here’s how it works…God told His people
that in order for their sins to be forgiven, each one had to offer certain
things as sacrifices to Him. However, no family member could bring the
sacrifice to God directly, The sacrifice had to be brought according to God’s
plan, which meant that it had to be brought by a representative of the
people. A man of God’s choosing.
4. (Tabernacle Illustration) Aaron, God’s appointed high priest, or his sons
would bring the sacrifices to God. The priest had to dress a certain way, do
things in a certain order and even move a certain way. Each of the sacrifices
that they brought to God on behalf of the people had to be perfect and
without blemish – regardless whether they were lambs, bulls, goats, or birds.
But they all had one thing in common. As the appointed sacrifice, each one
had to be slain and their blood shed. Every chosen animal, chosen to be
sacrificed, had to be killed in a certain way, at a certain place and at a
certain time – God commanded how is was to be done, what was to be
sacrificed and who was going to bring it… all dictated by God. Anything that
was not as God commanded would not have been accepted; therefore, it
would not pay for their sins.
5. That may sound too horrible and bloody! Why is God so strict? Because sin is
a very serious matter. It is so awful that only death and the shedding of
blood can pay for it. It is so awful that there is only ONE way to pay for it.
Why can’t anybody go to God with a scarifice? The same reason…Because sin

is a very serious and horrible thing. God can’t look beyond it or excuse it. Sin
must be punished. Sin makes us unholy and God can only accept holy things,
because He is holy. Sin make us dirty and God can only accept clean things
because He is clean. Sin makes us incomplete and God can only accept whole
things because God is whole. God commanded that all these things be done
according to His way because He was teaching us how serious this matter of
sin is. In addition, He is also teaching us that there is only one way for sins
to be paid for. He was teaching us that it is impossible for anyone come to
God on his/her own. To come to God, everyone must come through God’s
chosen representative, His high priest. No one can come to Him (God) by
their own means or anything of their own choosing. It has to be what God
demands.
6. Let’s talk about the word holy. This book teaches us how unholy people can
come to a holy God. Do you know what holy means? How many of you have
heard this word before? This is a tricky word to understand so lets try to
picture what it means. (Hold up the sheet of clean, bright white paper. ) I
want you to look over this paper. What color is it? (White). Does it look dirty
or clean? (Clean). Are the edges torn off or bent? (No). Is this a whole piece
or just a partial piece? (Whole). When you think of the word holy I want you
to picture this whole, clean perfect piece of paper. God tells us in this book
that He is holy. That means he is perfect, without blemish or spot, beautiful
and WHOLE, nothing is missing! When you see the word holy I want you to
say in your head “Whole”. It means nothing is missing. It means complete
and perfect. We are unholy (hold up the dirty wadded torn paper) We are
the opposite of holy. This book of Levitius talks about how God, who is
perfect and holy (whole) promises to make His particular people, who are
sinful and broken and not holy (not whole, show wadded paper), to be holy
(whole, clean whole paper) just like Him. It illustrates how He makes an
unclean thing into a clean thing.
7. The message of this book is simply that God demands holiness. He requires
Truth For Children: Through the Bible Series: Leviticus © 2012 3
it. (Hold up the dirty, torn paper) – are we holy? No. We are not. When Adam
sinned in the garden we became corrupt, broken, and unholy. (Hold up the
dirty waded torn paper). We were seperated from God; therefore, we are no
longer Whole…What are we going to do? Can we make ourselves whole? No.
But God can.. How? That is what this book is all about. How God gives to us
what he demands by giving us Christ.
8. All these laws and ceremonies that this book talks about points us to Christ.
Christ is the sacrifice, Christ shed his own blood, not the blood of bulls and
goats, Christ gave his own life, for the payment of sin. Christ bought
freedom for his people. Christ is the priest, Christ is the only man, appointed
by God, that is acceptable to bring the scrifice. Why so strict? Because
there is nothing more awful, or serious than sin and nothing pays for it but
the shedding of blood and God will not accept it except from the hands of
his appointed high priest – All that points to Christ alone.
9. I am going to end by telling you a story. A story that I hope helps to
illustrate what this book is about and what it illustrates. A few years ago, at
a particular church - Children were putting on a small program, and one little
boy was to stand up and recite a few lines in the program. He was about your
age - about five or six years old and he had a deformity; he was a humpback.
He walked across the stage to give his recitation. He was very shy and
afraid, and very much aware of his condition. In fact, it was the first time
that he had ever tried anything like this and it was a great struggle for him.
Two older fellows had come into the back of the room intending to make fun
of the service. One of them called out to this boy as he walked across the
stage, "Hey, bud, where are you going with that pack on your back?" The
little boy was horribly hurt, and he just stood there and sobbed.
10. A man got up from the audience and approached the stage. There he knelt
down by the little boy and put his arm around him. Then he said to the
audience, "It must take a very callous and cruel person to say something like
that to a little boy like this. He is suffering from something that is not his

fault at all. In spite of this deformity, he was trying for the first time to
venture out and say something in public. This remark has cut him deeply. But
I want you to know that I love him just the way he is; this little boy is mine,
he belongs to me, and I'm proud of him" And he led the boy off the
platform.
11. That is what God is really saying to us. He sees our hurt, our heartache, our
longing, and our brokenness, and says, "You're MINE". But that isn't all.
Because of his power and wisdom, God says, with that wonderful hopefulness
of a loving father, "Since you are mine--- you shall be healed, made whole, all
your blemishes and deformities corrected, all your faults straightened out,
all your iniquities set aside, all your tangled relationships unsnarled. You shall
be whole, for I am whole." That is what this book is about, that is what the
Bible is about, and that is what Jesus Christ is about.

Title: LEVITICUS: God Demands and Gives Holiness Text: Leviticus 20:26 Subject: Salvation by God’s Sacrifice Date: Tuesday Evening—January 28, 2003 Tape # X-44a Readings: Bob Duff and Ron Wood Introduction:
The Book of Exodus concludes with the setting up of the tabernacle for the worship of God. This was the place where God met with his chosen people, the place of divine worship, the place from whence the Lord God gave out his word to his people. This tabernacle, being a picture of our dear Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, the incarnate God, was made exactly according to the pattern God gave to Moses. The Book of Leviticus gives us the prescribed ordinances and ceremonies of divine worship.
This Book was written by Moses 2500 years after the creation, about 1500 before the coming of Christ. The various sacrifices, rites, and ceremonies made here described were typical of Christ, and shadows of those good things to come by him for the everlasting salvation of our souls.
THREE HISTORICAL EVENTS
There are only three historical events mentioned in the whole Book of Leviticus. But those three historical events are very instructive.
1. The first historical event recorded in this Book is THE CONSECRATION OF AARON AND HIS SONS AS THE PRIESTS of Israel (ch. 8-9). There is a twofold type here.
