The Wordings of Istighfar For the seekers of from Al-’Azeez, Al-Ghaffar Compiled by Abu Abu Hurayrah Night of 14th of Sha’ban, 1441H April 7, 2020

ﺑﺴﻢ اﷲ واﻟﺼﻼة واﻟﺴﻼم ﻋﻠﻰ رﺳﻮل اﷲ One of the most noble ways to seek an exit from calamity is to repent and seek forgiveness for the and mistakes and come back to Allaah. The worst thing that one can do is to continue sinning in the time of calamity thinking very soon it will be over. Such people, even if they might exit the calamity apparently unharmed, they will exit with a strong urge to commit evil and their transgression will keep on increasing until, may Allaah forbid, they might meet their end and they are boastful sinners.

As for people of tawheed and truth, they seek the real sunni way. The real sunni way is to come back to Allaah with a heart full of humility and meekness. This article will focus on those words that the Prophet taught to seek forgiveness so we can be one of the best of those who make mistake by repenting to Allaah (‘Azza wa jall).

But when some one of his companions narrated a tradition to me I adjured him. When he took an oath, I testified to him. AbuBakr narrated to me a tradition, and AbuBakr narrated truthfully. He (saying: When a servant (of Allah (ﷺ) said: I heard the apostle of Allah commits a , and he performs ablution well, and then stands and prays two rak'ahs, and asks pardon of Allah, Allah pardons him. He then recited this verse: "And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but Allah - And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know." (Al-Qur'an 3:135). [reported by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, An-Nasee, Ibn Majah, Ahmed in Musnad, authenticated by Al-Albani (Saheeh) and Al-Arnaout (Isnad is saheeh)

This is famously known as salatal istighfar, and it can be said at any time including the forbidden time of prayer (i.e during Sunrise, sunset, zawal, after obligatory prayer of fajr/’asr…)

Difference between Istighfar and Tawbah:

Istighfar: to seek forgiveness for sins/shortcomings of the past, present and future. Istighfar is that we are asking Allaah to forgive us, but it might not necessarily include the tawbah! Istighfar can be done for the living and the dead (only Muslims, as for those who died as non-Muslims, we are forbidden to seek forgiveness for them)

Tawbah: repentance, has conditions and one of the conditions is that it has to include istighfar. Can’t be performed for someone else. Tawbah can’t be performed on behalf of someone else. However, we can ask Allaah to give people the tawfeeq to make tawbah or ask Allaah to accept their tawbah. But we can’t make tawbah for them!

Tawbah and istighfar are the same when they are used separately. But if they are used together in a sentence they have their own meaning.

Tawbah/istighfar has timing: Until a certain time, tawbah/istighfar is accepted.

a) Time of death: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah will accept the repentance of His slave so long as the death rattle has not yet begun.” Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi (3537). Blessings of istighfar:

Below are some of the blessings of Istighfar from the book of Allaah.

a) A sinner will always find Allaah forgiving and and Merciful:

Alaah ta’alaa says in Sura Al-Nisa: َ ُ ﱠَ ﱠَ َوَﻣﻦ َﯾﻌَﻤﻞ ﺳﻮًءا أو َﯾﻈﻠِﻢ َﻧﻔ َﺴُﻪ ﺛﱠﻢ َﯾﺴَﺘﻐِﻔ ِﺮ اﷲ َﯾ ِﺠِﺪ اﷲ َﻏﻔﻮ ًرا َرﺣﯿًﻤﺎ And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah's Forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Al-Nisa, 110]

:said (ﷺ) Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah “Allah, Blessed is He and Most High, said: ‘O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky, then you sought forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you, and I would not mind. So son of Adam! If you came to me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness nearly as great as it.’” [Tirmidhi and others, authenticated by Al-Albani]

b) Istighfar is a cause of prevention of the ‘Adhaab of Allaah: Allaah ta’aalaa says in Sura Al-Anfal: ﱠُ ﱢ َ ﱠُ ﱢ َوﻣﺎ ﻛﺎ َن اﷲ ﻟُِﯿَﻌﺬَﺑُﻬﻢ َوأﻧ َﺖ ﻓﯿِﻬﻢ ۚ َوﻣﺎ ﻛﺎ َن اﷲ ُﻣَﻌﺬَﺑُﻬﻢ َوُﻫﻢ َﯾﺴَﺘﻐِﻔﺮو َن And Allah would not punish them while you (Muhammad ) are amongst them, nor will He punish them while they seek (Allah's) Forgiveness. [Al-Anfal:33]

c) Blessings of wealth, children, rain and goodness on the earth for the mustaghfireen:

In Sura Nuh

"I said (to them): 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; 'He will send rain to you in abundance; 'And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.'

d) Worldly enjoyment will be provided for the Mustaghfireen:

[Sura Hud: 3]

And (commanding you): "Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding Grace to every owner of grace

Prophet and his companions used to seek Istighfar

If the Prophet himself used to seek 100 times a day and he used to feel there is a covering on his heart, then why are we so far from making this practice of our daily routine.

As for the below reported by Ibn Majah, Ahmed and others, it is weak, not authentic [graded as weak by Al-Albaani and Al-Arnaout]. Since I mentioned it in one of the Khutbah in Masjid Ibrahim, I am reporting here so we are all aware that it is weak. May Allaah forgive my shortcomings and save me from attributing lies upon our beloved Messenger and his companions (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

The authentic wordings of the Istighfar

Since we are here talking about legislated supplication then of course the following rulings apply:

a) The wordings of the istighfar should be kept as they are found in the authentic narration. b) Some have restrictive usage with certain numbers and at certain occasions. c) Some are left open for us to repeat as much as we want. No restriction can be put for such supplications. d) All du’as must be verified to be from the authentic sources. e) There are numerous du’as but I selected some special ones...

Du’a of forgivness taught to his best companion:

to teach me (ﷺ) Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq: I asked Allah's Messenger an invocation so that I may invoke Allah with it in my prayer. He told me to say, "Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa anta, fa ghfir li maghfiratan min `indika, wa r-hamni, innaka anta l-ghafuru r-rahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful). [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

This du’a comes with different wordings in different narrations. And it is to be said only once…

Abu Musa Ash'ari reported on the authority of his father that Allahs Apostle :used to supplicate in these words (ﷺ) " O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my immoderation in my concerns. And you are better aware (of my affairs) than myself. O Allah, grant me forgiveness (of the faults which I committed) seriously or in jest and which I committed inadvertently and de- liberately. All these (failings) are in me. O Allah, grant me forgiveness from the fault which I did in haste or deferred, which I committed in privacy or in public and you are better aware of (them) than myself. You are the First and the Last and you are powerful over everything" [Sahih Muslim]

The Prophet with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise."

The translation of the du'a: O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You have created me and I am Your slave and I am keeping my promise and covenant to You as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I do. I acknowledge Your blessing and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for there is none who can forgive sin except You.

This du’a is left open to be said at any time, no specific number or time can be assigned.

Note: This narration has different versions from other companions [Hudayfah, Al-Bara etc…], none of those are authentic. The above version is the one that Al-Albani and Al-Arnaout authenticated. The narrations which are weak claim that it should be said after every salah or at the time of going to bed and they are all unauthentic, alhamdulillah for the science of isnad that makes us separate the truth from falsehood

Conclusion: Let’s take advantage of these words and efforts from the scholars of hadith who worked, are working and will work hard to preserve the freshness of the breaths of our Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

We just have to make small efforts to tap into their work to benefit from the ocean of goodness, an ocean that has no shore but regardless of wherever we dive, we will extract jewels and pearls of knowledge from the words of our beloved Messenger Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

I ask Allaah to forgive me, my parents, my family, children, our scholars and teachers and all the Muslims.
