1. Day 1 Report Alejan has a major breakthrough

Edgardo Alejan proved his worth after a last-minute replacement for 2007 SEA Games champion Julius Nierras. So Alejan had a massive breakthrough to finish third in Heat 2 in a Personal Best of 47.40s. While the time shattered his then personal best of 48.01.

He had established at the National Games finishing third then behind Archand Bagsit (47.89) and Julius Nierras (47.90).

Also, Julius who at the PNG ran 47.84 in the heats, in which Alejan took the season lead for 2013. While Alejan performance is #2 in South East Asia in 2013, behind 2011 SEA Games Champion Heru Astriano. Also, the time also put him at #5 in the all-time list behind former SEA Games Champions Del Prado, Nierras, Candelario, Aing.

And in the first heat Archand Bagsit, the 2011 SEA Games Silver Medalist finished fifth in heat 1 and managed to qualify through with a seasons best of 47.87.

While No other SEA Athletes qualified for the Semi-Finals.

Also in the Semi-Finals Bagsit was last in Heat 1 in 47.93 and Alejan obviously tired from his earlier effort finished sixth in 48.18 in the second heat in which the last two of his competitors did not finish the race.

While this is really good for the Men's 4x400 Relay. Yet no SEA rivals showed any good form in this event and Alejan performance will greatly bring down the teams average.

While now three men have hit below the 47.97 required for SEA Games in 2013,

Alejan 47.40 / 3rd at PNG, Nierras 47.84 / 2nd at PNG and Bagsit 47.87 /1st at PNG. So this will make it hard for the selectors to decide on the final two as only two entries allowed per country per event at SEA Games. Definitely, all three will be certain of spots in the 4x400 Relay selection.

Loralie Sermona[/caption]

Also, Loralie Sermona continued her success at Asian Championship level by securing an eighth place at the meet. Sermona also threw a new national record of 50.55m, to break her old mark of 50.23m she set in Hong Kong last year. Loralie the bronze medallist at the last sea games is now ranked third in south- east Asia for 2013.

Very heavy rain saw it very difficult for all athletes for produce very good results on the second day of competition at Pune. Jesson Ramil Cid finished seventh overall in the Decathlon. Albeit his score of 6433 was considerably below his personal best overall score of 6961 he scored in Thailand last November.

National Record Holder Henry Dagmil qualified through in the last place of 12 in the prelims of the Men's with 7.34m and will seek action in the final tomorrow.

Dagmil has a personal best of 7.99m and a season-best of 7.39m from the PNG. A score of 7.61m is required for SEA Games qualification. He will be in action tomorrow in the finals.

The other participant today was Fil-Heritage Hurdler Eric Cray who finished third in his heat in 14.31s and did not advance to the finals finishing 12th of 21 entries. Cray is the National Record Holder in the 110 and 400 Hurdles. His time at the PNG was 14.17. Cray now will participate in his core event the 400 Hurdles on July 6 where he is ranked fifth on the startlists with a personal best of 50.46.

4. Day 3 Report

Apologies as due to other commitments and site issues I had not been able to update this site as frequently as I would have liked.

So in Summary, some athletes had performances below what they did at the PNG and were not able to reach the SEA Games standards in their events but still have time to meet the marks before December.

• Veteran Danilo Fresnido finished with 63.41m behind his performance at the PNG of 66.16m with SEA Games Bronze sitting at 66.27m. • Henry Dagmil finished 11th in the Long Jump with 7.27m (Dagmil had leaped 7.34m in the prelims outside his seasons best of 7.39m), Thai Supanara Sukhavasti who leaped SEA leading 7.64m in the prelims (the leading time in South East Asia). • Not a good meet for Narcisca Atienza 1.64m High Jump (PB 1.81 phi record), 11.69 Shotput (12+ PB), 110H (15.61 not bad). .

5. Also very interesting to note the following changes to the SEA Rankings for 2013

• Guarte (PHI) did not participate in the 1500m • In the Women's 1500m Do Thi Thao ran 4:26.31, to move ahead of Sarah Vitug 4:27.65 on the SEA Rankings for 2013. • Pham Tien San of Vietnam clocked 9:17.94 in his second race for 2013, ran 9:19 prior this year. He is ranked #2 in the SEA but well behind Ulboc who has run 9:05. • Wassana Winatho of Thailand ran 13.90 in the 100 Hurdles which is the #2 fastest time in South East Asia this year. And also ranked 3rd in SEA with 1.82m while participating in the .

6. Day 4 Report: Cray Makes the Final

Fil-Heritage hurdler Eric Cray made the final of the 400 Hurdles. While Cray who has a personal best of 50.46, made the most of the heavy rain to finish third in the first heat in 51.83. And he finished behind Fueki of Japan (PB 49.08) the meets fastest man on the entry list and local favorite Satinder Singh 51.20.

Cray also beat SEA Games Champion Dao Xuan Cuong of Vietnam 52.34 (PB and SEA Games Gold 51.45) and blocked him from making the final, Cuong finished fourth in heat 1.

While in the second heat, Yuta of Japan clocked 51.24 (PB 49.3) with Chen of Taipei 51.74

(PB 50.23). In Heat 3 Cheng of China 51.36 (PB 50.1), Gamel Abel Nasir of Qatar 51.68 (PB 49.6) and Artem Dyalov of Uzbekistan 52.07. The top 2 and the 2 fastest qualifiers made it through.

Lane Draw for the Final (please ignore the date of births the Asian Athletics Association has got them wrong).

.,

It was also a good performance by Arniel Ferrera who had earlier was worrying about back issues but was able to break his seasons best with a throw of 61.39m which sees him in the kind of shape he needs to regain his SEA Games Gold medal he lost in 2011. Ferrera would be going for his 5th title in this event at the SEA Games if he is able to win.

Mervin Guarte clocked 1:58.44 (but it looks like the second heat has some sort of timing error, as his heat won in 1:54 and heat 1 and 3 is 1:48 and 1:49 winners). It was also a disappointing meet for Rosie Villarito who threw 46.29m (below her seasons best of 49.16m at the Asian Grand Prix) and Narsica Atienza suffering an elbow injury in the Javelin unable to finish the Heptathlon.

.

• Also, interesting to note Wassana Winatho has won her first title at the age of 34 with 5818 points in the Heptathlon. • The 200m women's runners were not close to the SEA Games leaders for 2013 • Thailand women's 4x100 time of 44.44 improved their season lead for SEA • Sukanya Chomchuendee of Thailand who was only 5th at the last SEA Games with 3.80, had a massive breakthrough in the women's pole vault to win the Bronze at her first Asian championships and now goes into the SEA Games as the favorite to win the gold

7. Day 5 Final Report

Bano starts off the men's 4x400m relay team.[/caption]

Eric Cray was not able to finish in the 400 Hurdles in it what was a rain-soaked final. Unable to warm up as the bus sent by the organizers did not reach the athlete's hotel.

The same quartet that won the Men's 4x400 of Bano, Bagsit, Alejan, and Nierras improved their mark to 3:10.86 and placed fifth the highest rank of any of the Filipino athletes at the meet. This improved their SEA Games winning time. However, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia who were not present will also be strong at SEA Games.

It's going to be interesting.
