(2) Live oder nicht Guten Morgen … Was ist der Unterschied zwischen „live“ und „nicht-live“? Das sollte nicht allzu schwer sein: „Live“ wird vorgetragen in dem Moment, sonst handelt es sich um eine Aufnahme – und wird damit für alle Zeit gleich hörbar, abgesehen vom jeweiligen Gemütszustand des Hörenden. Mit anderen Worten: „Live“ ist nicht automatisch das Gegenteil von „nicht-live“, weil da noch etwas zwischengeschaltet ist, ein Individuum, das hört und interpretiert, dessen eigene Befindlichkeit beim Hören das Ereignis (als Erlebnis) kräftig einfärben wird. Sonst wäre ein „Live“ dem „Nicht-Live“ ja turmhoch überlegen; Menschen, die Musik im Augenblick ihres Entstehens tatsächlich machen, darin steckt mehr Atmosphäre als in den chromgleißendsten neuen High-End- Abspielgeräten. Das Prinzip der Echtzeit schlägt jede Koserve. Aber das, wie gesagt, ist es nicht allein. Es kommt im Unterschied zwischen „Live“ und „Nicht-Live“ - außer der nur live mitkligenden Obertonreihe - noch ein ganz wesentlicher, durchaus atmosphärischer Faktor hinzu: das Risiko. MUSIK: R. STRAUSS, ROSENKAVALIER-WALZER, TRACK 12 (6:28) 1) Richard Strauss, Rosenkavalier-Walzer (arr. f. Violine); Vasa Prihoda; WOW POL- 1008-2, 6‘21 Ja, das war ohne Zweifel eine Live-Aufnahme, einmal gespielt, einmal aufgenommen: Damals, ca. 1920, ging das noch nicht anders. Der sogenannte „Risiko-Faktor“ wird in dieser Zugabenversion von Richard Strauss' „Rosenkavalier- Walzern“, gespielt von Vasa Prihoda, ganz schön deutlich. Diese Art der Aufnahme, etwas sonst Unwiederbringliches konservierend, bewegt sich zwischen den Gegenpolen: Sie ist einerseits „live“, weil sie einen bestimmten Augenblick festhält; andererseits nicht, weil Prihoda dafür ja nicht extra die Geige auspackt. 2 Das atmosphärestärkste „Live“-Konzert eines einzelnen Menschen fand in Karlsruhes alter Stadthalle statt, vor rund 40 Jahren. Ein kleiner Mann im Frack und mit einer Geige in Händen erklomm die fußbaldfeldgroße Bühne, mit Blumenkübeln nur notdürftig „intimer“ gemacht. Dann spielte er zwei Stunden lang allein, immer abwechselnd etwas von Johann Sebastian Bach und von Nicolò Paganini. Die seltsame Mischung erschien als das Selbstverständlichste der Welt. Der Mann hieß Nathan Milstein. Und als, nach dem Konzert, die Fans sich um ihn drängten, fand er noch Zeit für Scherze: „Elf Autogramme wollen Sie? Warum? Kriegen Sie für zehnmal Milstein eines von Heifetz?“ So war auch das Konzert gewesen: Bescheiden und stolz, pointiert und von nobler Routine. Die Atmosphäre: ein Gesamtkunstwerk. Die fußballfeldgroße Bühne und die Blumenkübel, die Zartheit des Spielers und seine Kraft: all das trug ein Teil dazu bei. Rasch wurde der Abend für mich einer der atmosphärestärksten. Er bot große Musik und Drahtseil. Aber zurück zu dieser unbekannten Größe, dem Risiko. Auch die großen Solisten patzen „live“ manches Mal, ein berühmtes Beispiel ist der russische Pianist Emil Gilels. Wenn Gilels im Konzert eine Sternstunde hatte, dann sang die Galaxis. Verhaute er sich aber mal, dann wurde er wütend; dann konnte es passieren, dass der Pianist vor Verzweiflung und Selbsthass immer schlechter spielte – der ursprüngliche Patzer wurde dann zur self-fulfilling prophecy. Vielleicht kommt es daher, dass man den Studioaufnahmen des späten Gilels zu wenig Risikobereitschaft vorwarf: Er wagt da nichts mehr, trotz Schneidemöglichkeit, er will seinen Dämon zügeln, bevor der sein Haupt reckt. Deswegen, um Gilels' ganze Größe zu erfassen – muss man ihn „live“ hören, als entfesselten Prometheus, nicht als domestizierten Studiotiger. MUSIK: LISZT, RHAPSODIE ESPAGNOLE, TRACK 11 (7’53) 2) Gilels live in Leningrad: Franz Liszt – Rhapsodie espagnole, Musical Concepts ALC 1300, 7‘53 Emil Gilels im Konzert, mithin „live“: Was er hier mit Franz Liszts „Rhapsodie espagnole“ veranstaltet, beweist, dass er im Konzert abheben konnte und über allem kreisen wie ein Adler – sofern er vorher nicht einmal zu oft in den Schatten gegriffen hatte. Das war 1968 in der Großen Halle von Leningrad. 3 Jahrtausendlang gab es gar nichts anderes als „live“: Die Obertonreihe war fester Bestandteil des Stücks, weil keiner es anders kannte; dabei mag der eine oder andere verblüfft gewesen sein, wieso es manches Mal „so anders“ klang. Nur wenn jemand spielte, dann jemand hörte – es sei denn, er wäre schizophren gewesen. Die Technische Reproduzierbarkeit eines Konzerts, die erst ein „Nicht-Live“ möglich machte, war ein Kind des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zuerst konnte man ein „Live“ nur dann verbessern, wenn man es komplett neueinspielte, wenn man sozusagen ein neues „Live“ kreierte, um damit ein altes zu ersetzen. Der nächste Schritt, in der Zeit der Langspielplatte, war's, das „Live“ mit allerlei Flecken und Flicken zu „verbessern“, missglückte Momente gezielt noch einmal zu spielen, um das Missglückte zu ersetzen. Heute ist es gang und gäbe, auch große Orchester- oder Oratorienwerke einmal „live“ aufzunehmen – die Aufnahmen aber durch Schnipsel anderer Abende oder Probenmomente zu „flicken“, bis eine möglichst perfekte „Gesamtaufnahme“ zusammengeschustert ist. Echte „Live“-Aufnahmen macht man nur noch, wenn etwas eigentlich Unwiederbringliches in alle Ewigkeit - „wiederbringlich“ sein soll; sagen wir mal: Die Queen tritt in der Royal Albert Hall auf und singt „Land of Hope and Glory“ - das macht sie nämlich bestimmt nur ein einziges Mal, wenn überhaupt. Ich möchte Ihnen nun aber das Gegenteil einer „Live“-Aufnahme vorstellen: Christian Ferras, ein tüchtiger französischer Geiger, spielt mit den Berliner Philharmonikern Tschaikowskys Violinkonzert D-dur op. 35, Herbert von Karajan pinselt, Produktionsfirma war die Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, Entstehungsjahr: 1962. Im Konzert, komme was wolle, spielt man dieses Stück natürlich durch, inklusive der beiden Kadenzen zum ersten und dritten Satz. Die zum ersten ist besonders schwer, aber das entschuldigt natürlich nicht, dass Christian Ferras – sie in über 68 „Takes“ spielt, zusammengesetzt also aus über 68 „Nachaufnahmen“! Karajans Perfektionswahn und des Geigers schlechte Nerven verbanden sich hier aufs Absurdeste und schufen eine Kadenz, die fast Note für Note separat aufgenommen wurde, dem „Live“-Gedanken so für alle Zeiten Hohn sprechend! MUSIK: TSCHAIKOWSKY, VIOLINKONZERT (KADENZ 1. SATZ), 2‘33 3) Tschaikowsky, Violinkonzert D-dur (Kadenz); Christian Ferras, Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan; ... M0019005.001, 2‘33 4 Tschaikowsky-Kadenz als Flickenteppich, als Musikpuzzle: Christian Ferras brauchte anno 1962 über 68 Nachaufnahmen, aus denen dann im Violinkonzert D-dur diese Kadenz des Kopfsatzes zusammengepuzzlet wurde – sozusagen als Antithese des „Live“-Gedankens. Ferras spielte damals mit den Berliner Philharmonikern, der Dirigent war Karajan (der dem nervlich nicht allzu gefestigten Geiger den Marathon vermutlich abgerungen hat). Im August 1959 entstand in den RCA Studios von Newark eine berühmte Aufnahme, die ebenfalls (aber auf andere Art) als „Antithese der Live-Aufnahme“ verstanden werden darf: Bachs Doppelkonzert für zwei Violinen A- dur, gespielt von Jascha Heifetz – und Jascha Heifetz. Das jüngst erfundene Playback-Verfahren hatte es dem großen Geiger gestattet, das Doppelkonzert mit sich selbst zu spielen, statt als einen Dialog quasi als doppelten Monolog. Warum sollte auch „der größte Geiger der Welt“, wie man ihn damals nannte, nicht den Wunsch verspüren, mit seinesgleichen zu musizieren, also mit dem anderen größten Geiger der Welt? Gesagt-getan – nur war das Resultat zum Steinerweichen. Als erster merkte das Heifetz selber: Was mal als Streit, als Disput und dann wieder Zwiegesang konzipiert war, war plötzlich von gähnender Ödnis. Heifetz spielte fantastisch – aber er spielte beide Solostimmen gleich fantastisch, man nahm sie nicht mehr wahr als zwei Stimmen, sondern als eine geteilte. Als ich noch ein Knabe war, besaß meine Mutter, eine Geigern, diese LP. Sie wurde oft gespielt, meistens sonntags. Ich weiß noch, wie mir eines auffiel, und zwar bevor ich erfuhr, dass beide Geiger ein und derselbe waren: Das Klangbild erschien mir seltsam tot, Bachs Linien wollten nirgends erblühen, das Gleichförmige des Klanges erschien mir bald als Gleichgültigkeit. Wohl hörte ich Ansätze zu exquisiter Tongebung, eine Art Versprechen, dass Bach bald nach Bach klingen würde – aber die Schwelle wurde nie überschritten. Irgendetwas stimmte nicht mit dieser Aufnahme. Und deshalb verwundert es nicht, dass Heifetz selbst sie aus dem Verkehr zog: und Bachs Doppelkonzert A-dur noch einmal aufnahm. Diesmal aber mit
