  • MOHAMMED KAZEM Infinite Angles Opening: 23 March, 2 – 8Pm 24 March – 20 May, 2020
PRESS RELEASE MOHAMMED KAZEM Infinite Angles Opening: 23 March, 2 – 8pm 24 March – 20 May, 2020 Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde is pleased to announce its exhibition of Mohammed Kazem: Infinite Angles. The exhibition features new works on paper, paintings and readymade, which continue Kazem’s exploration of materiality and the visualization of light and sound. The artworks on view are imprints and records of both material and immaterial things in the world, they reveal an invisible light and inaudible sound that exists in a continuous sequence with no beginning or end. Kazem photographs light to capture its manifestations across building constructions. He also hears the sound of light as he scratches it onto the surface of paper. Kazem’s paintings, drawings, and scratched paper act as a site for the production of creative work, where his material is reshaped into an artefact that documents this labour. Sound of Sound of Light, 2020, Acrylic and ink on canvas, 152 x 183 cm Angles (2020) is an installation that brings together a found door and new scratches on paper. Continuing his scratching technique, which Kazem began in the 1990’s, he created abrasions into the paper’s surface with a pair of scissors pushes and pulls the blade against the paper, tearing and scratching the material in an effort to render sound visual. In this installation, Kazem includes a found bathroom door, which he first encountered at an Italian restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio. The door wears the marks of history upon its surface; layers of paint, now slowly coming off, attempt to mask the evidence of the countless palms that have pressed upon it.

  • Before the Emirates: an Archaeological and Historical Account of Developments in the Region C
Before the Emirates: an Archaeological and Historical Account of Developments in the Region c. 5000 BC to 676 AD D.T. Potts Introduction In a little more than 40 years the territory of the former Trucial States and modern United Arab Emirates (UAE) has gone from being a blank on the archaeological map of Western Asia to being one of the most intensively studied regions in the entire area. The present chapter seeks to synthesize the data currently available which shed light on the lifestyles, industries and foreign relations of the earliest inhabitants of the UAE. Climate and Environment Within the confines of a relatively narrow area, the UAE straddles five different topographic zones. Moving from west to east, these are (1) the sandy Gulf coast and its intermittent sabkha; (2) the desert foreland; (3) the gravel plains of the interior; (4) the Hajar mountain range; and (5) the eastern mountain piedmont and coastal plain which represents the northern extension of the Batinah of Oman. Each of these zones is characterized by a wide range of exploitable natural resources (Table 1) capable of sustaining human groups practising a variety of different subsistence strategies, such as hunting, horticulture, agriculture and pastoralism. Tables 2–6 summarize the chronological distribution of those terrestrial faunal, avifaunal, floral, marine, and molluscan species which we know to have been exploited in antiquity, based on the study of faunal and botanical remains from excavated archaeological sites in the UAE. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the number of sites from which the inventories of faunal and botanical remains have been published remains minimal.

A&E Projects was born from both Arianne Levene and Eglantine de Ganay’s desire to unite their individual skills and experience as art advisors and curators and their knowledge of the global contemporary art world. This exhibition is their third collaboration following the hi- ghly acclaimed “Made in Iran” exhibition at Asia House (Lon- don, 2009) and Rashid Rana’s solo show at the Musée Guimet (Paris, 2010). Arianne Levene and Eglantine de Ganay have worked together with some of Asia’s leading and most highly respected artists and collectors; both as curators and in ensu- ring the placing of their works amongst the world’s top pri- vate and public art collections. Outline for the exhibition A&E Projects was born from the desire to introduce the pu- blic to artists that stand out on the Contemporary Internatio- nal art scene, with a particular focus on art from Asia, South East Asia and the Middle-East. For our most recent exhibition, we have chosen to work with five artists with varying social, cultural and religious backgrounds: Reza Aramesh (Iran/UK), Shezad Dawood (India/Pakistan/UK), Idris Khan (Pakistan/UK), Ariandhitya Pramhendra (In- donesia) et Michal Rovner (Israel/ US). All these artists address, in their own unique and personal way, issues surrounding spirituality, religion and the human condition.

  • Journal Paper Format
International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology Vol. 28, No. 16, (2019), pp. 1695 – 1705 The Role of Contemporary Biographical Museums in Heritage Conservation in the UAE Sadeka. Shakour Department of Furniture and Interior Design, Faculty of Applied Arts E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The first generation of Museums in the UAE was more oriented towards displaying artifacts and ethnographic segments of history. On the other hand, the current trend is more toward the changes and associated collective memories of the community in a rapidly developing modern nation state. His Highness, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan was the founder of the state and had a powerful and influential vision and personality that not only influenced his society, but also passed through to the whole Gulf region. Having a biographical Museum for Sheikh Zayed is essential for documenting and preserving the details of his personality and presenting different aspects of his life in an innovative manner. Such museum will allow younger, technology-oriented generations to follow in the footsteps of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan to develop and progress their country. In addition, a biographical museum will provide a platform to reconnect with the past to conserve UAE heritage. Emerging contemporary museums in Al-Saadiyat Island exemplify the shift, from traditional forts that were restored into museums, to new forms of spaces. This new type offers technologies to support the exhibition of artifacts and objects in context and scale based on international design guidelines. Therefore, the biographical museum that is proposed by this research is to be built in Al-Saadiyat Island.

Dubai 2020: Dreamscapes, Mega Malls and Spaces of Post-Modernity Dubai’s hosting of the 2020 Expo further authenticates its status as an example of an emerging Arab city that displays modernity through sequences of fragmented urban- scapes, and introvert spaces. The 2020 Expo is expected to reinforce the image of Dubai as a city of hybrid architectures and new forms of urbanism, marked by technologically advanced infrastructural systems. This paper revisits Dubai’s spaces of the spectacle such as the Burj Khalifa and themed mega malls, to highlight the power of these spaces of repre- sentation in shaping Dubai’s image and identity. • MOHAMMED KAZEM Mohammed Kazem (Born 1969, Dubai) Lives and Works in Dubai
MOHAMMED KAZEM Mohammed Kazem (born 1969, Dubai) lives and works in Dubai. He has developed an artistic practice that encompasses video, photography and performance to find new ways of apprehending his environment and experiences. The foundations of his work are informed by his training as a musician, and Kazem is deeply engaged with developing processes that can render transient phenomena, such as sound and light, in tangible terms. Often positioning himself within his work, Kazem responds to geographical location, materiality and the elements as a means to assert his subjectivity, particularly in relation to the rapid pace of modernisation in the Emirates since the country’s founding. Kazem was a member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society early in his career and is acknowledged as one of the ‘Five’, an informal group of Emirati artists – including Hassan Sharif and Abdullah Al Saadi – at the vanguard of conceptual and interdisciplinary art practice. In 2012, Kazem completed his Masters in Fine Art at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. He has been participating in the Annual Exhibitions of the Emirates Fine Arts Society in Sharjah since 1986, as well as numerous editions of Sharjah Biennial, receiving first prize for installations in 1999 and 2003, and in 2007, co-curated the Sharjah Biennial. In recent years, Kazem has participated in several group shows at the Mori Art Museum (2012), Boghossian Foundation (2013), Gwangju Museum of Art (2014), the 2014 edition of the Fotofest Biennial in Houston and Here and Elsewhere at the New Museum (2014). He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale three times: in 2009 as part of a group exhibition curated by Catherine David, in 2013, he represented the UAE with an immersive video installation entitled Walking on Water, which was curated by Reem Fadda, and in 2015, he showcased works from the Tongue series at 1980 – Today: Exhibitions in the UAE, curated by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi.
