Gazda5 NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, 77058 This paper continues the annual tradition, at this conference, of summarizing the results of chemical analyses performed on archival potable water samples returned from the International Space Station (ISS). 2016 represented a banner year for life aboard the ISS, including the successful conclusion for 2 crewmembers of a record 1-year mission. Water reclaimed from urine and/or humidity condensate remained the primary source of potable water for the crewmembers of ISS Expeditions 46-50. The year was also marked by the end of a long-standing tradition of U.S. sampling and monitoring of Russian Segment potable water sources. Two water samples, taken during Expedition 46 and returned on Soyuz 44 in March 2016, represented the final Russian Segment samples to be collected and analyzed by the U.S. side. Although anticipated for 2016, a rise in the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the product water from the U.S. water processor assembly due to breakthrough of organic contaminants from the system did not materialize, as evidenced -

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER Winter | 2014 JSC 2.0.13: A LOOK BACK JSC Director In this edition… I’D LIKE TO START OFF 2014 by relating a couple of JSC 2.0 stories. The 3 ISS Science Corner first one involves the External Relations Office taking a fresh look at how 4 Orion sets the stage in 2013 they communicate about the International Space Station on NASA TV. They for Exploration Flight Test-1 determined they could more effectively and efficiently communicate by morphing the daily one-hour show called “Space Station Live” into a daily half- 6 Milestones hour show, primarily aimed at media representatives who follow NASA closely 8 2013 Social Media Spotlight and are interested in details, plus a weekly two-minute video called “Space to 10 NASA’s ‘what’s next’ team Ground” designed for the general public. The snappy “Space to Ground” has the advantage that it can be easily used in a variety of venues, including the 12 NASA hails success of NASA home page, outreach events, airport kiosks, museums/science centers, commercial space program, traveling exhibits and various social media. The changes allow us to reach plans readied for astronauts more people, produce products better suited to two different audiences and overall make better use of our resources. We’re getting good feedback on the PHOTO changes, but one of the first responses came in an email from a woman who NASA/ said her 79-year-old mother, who is a big NASA fan and avid watcher of NASA TV, was very disappointed that her 60-minute show had been cut in half! While I don’t like disappointing anyone (and I’ve sent a signed photo to the mom in a gesture of goodwill), it’s actually a nice reminder that there are people everywhere who are inspired by what we do and really want to hear all about it. -

The Aerospace Update Earth Day 2017 April 25, 2017 Video Credit: NASA Johnson Space Center Record-Breaking NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson Sets New Record for Time in Space NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson flew through the standing record for cumulative time spent in space by a U.S. astronaut at 1:27 a.m. EDT on April 24, and with the recent extension of her stay at the International Space Station, she has five months to rack up a new one. This is Whitson’s third long-duration stay onboard the space station, and in March her mission was extended into September, increasing the amount of valuable astronaut time available for experiments on board the station. The trusted Soyuz FG rocket lifted off from Site 1/5 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 7:13 UTC, carrying into orbit the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft manned by fifth-time space flier and third- time Soyuz commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and NASA’s Jack Fischer. The goal of such public engagement is to provide opportunities for active involvement of individuals in the experience of, as contributors to, and collaborators in, NASA’s research, science, and discovery activities. These opportunities deepen the public’s understanding, appreciation, and ownership in NASA Mission. In turn, these opportunities tap into the nation’s creativity and capabilities. Russian spaceship delivers three astronauts to space station (Update) 19 November 2016 Whitson, 56, is an experienced veteran and biochemistry expert who will break records with this space mission, including the title of the most days in space by a US astronaut. She is scheduled to surpass NASA astronaut Jeff Williams's 534 days on April 24. In February, Whitson will become the first woman to command the space station twice. She previously commanded the station in 2007, when she became the first woman to hold this post, NASA said. Their arrival means the staff at the orbiting outpost goes back up to six. Spacex Crs-11 Mission Overview
SPACEX CRS-11 MISSION OVERVIEW SpaceX’s eleventh contracted cargo resupply mission with NASA to the International Space Station will deliver almost 6,000 pounds of science and research, crew supplies and vehicle hardware to the orbital laboratory and its crew. Launch is targeted for Thursday, June 1, 2017. The Dragon spacecraft will launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and arrive at the space station two days later. Expedition 51 crew members Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer of NASA, Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) and cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos are currently living aboard the orbiting laboratory. Pesquet and Novitskiy are slated to return to Earth June 2 which will mark the start of Expedition 52. Fischer and Whitson will use the station’s robotic arm to capture Dragon when it arrives on station. The spacecraft will be berthed to the Earth-facing port on the Harmony module. Dragon will carry hardware and supplies to support dozens of the of approximately 250 science and research investigations that will occur during Expeditions 52 and 53. The unpressurized trunk of the spacecraft will also hold three payloads that will study neutron stars, test solar arrays, and hold instruments for Earth-observation.
