Interview with Heisuke Hironaka Interview with Heisuke Hironaka Heisuke Hironaka is one of the premier algebraic geometers of the twentieth century. He is best known for his 1964 work on the resolution of singularities of algebraic va- rieties over a field of characteristic zero, for which he received the Fields Medal in 1970. The fundamental nature of this problem was apparent to many mathematicians in the first part of the twentieth century, notably Oscar Zariski, who solved the prob- lem for curves and surfaces and had a profound influence on Hironaka. Taking a strik- ingly original approach, Hironaka created new algebraic tools and adapted existing ones suited to the problem. These tools have proved useful for attacking many other problems quite far removed from the resolution of singularities. Another major in- fluence was Alexandre Grothendieck, who in 1959 invited the young Hironaka for the first of his many visits to the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) in Paris. In a 2002 news release about the establishment of the Heisuke Hironaka Fund to pro- mote ties between the IHÉS and Japanese mathematicians, IHÉS professor Mikhael Gro- mov is quoted as saying that Hironaka’s resolution of singularities “is unique in the history of mathematics. It is one of the most difficult in the world that has not, to this day, been surpassed or sim- plified.” Heisuke Hironaka was born on April 9, 1931, in Yamaguchi-ken, Japan. As a student at Kyoto University, he was a member of the school around Yasuo Akizuki, who was a pioneer of modern algebra in Japan. Hironaka received his Ph.D. in 1960 from Harvard University, under the direction of Zariski. After positions at Brandeis University and Columbia University, he became a professor at Harvard in 1968, and from 1975 to 1988 he jointly held a profes- sorship at Kyoto University. He served as director of the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto Uni- versity from 1983 to 1985. He received the Japan Academy Award in 1970 and the Order of Culture of the Japan- ese government in 1975. The fame and esteem Hironaka is accorded in Japan would strike Westerners as quite remarkable. An average Japanese person without much background in mathematics or science is likely to know his name. Hironaka has contributed much time and effort to encouraging young people interested in mathematics. In 1980, he started a summer seminar for Japanese high school students and later added one for Japanese and American college students; the seminars ran for more than two decades under his direction and continue to this day. To sup- port the seminars he established a philanthropic foundation in 1984 called the Japan Association for Mathemati- cal Sciences. The association also provides fellowships for Japanese students to pursue doctoral studies abroad. From 1996 to 2002, Hironaka served as the president of Yamaguchi University, which is in the prefecture where he was born. Nowadays he continues his educational activities, particularly at the local level, and does mathematics research. What follows is the edited text of an interview with Heisuke Hironaka, conducted in December 2004 by Notices senior writer and deputy editor Allyn Jackson. —A.     Bimeromorphic geometry of K¨ahler threefolds Andreas H¨oring and Thomas Peternell Abstract. We describe the recently established minimal model program for (non-algebraic) K¨ahler threefolds as well as the abundance theorem for these spaces. 1. Introduction Given a complex projective manifold X, the Minimal Model Program (MMP) predicts that either X is covered by rational curves (X is uniruled) or X has a ′ - slightly singular - birational minimal model X whose canonical divisor KX′ is nef; and then the abundance conjecture says that some multiple mKX′ is spanned by global sections (so X′ is a good minimal model). The MMP also predicts how to achieve the birational model, namely by a sequence of divisorial contractions and flips. In dimension three, the MMP is completely established (cf. [Kwc92], [KM98] for surveys), in dimension four, the existence of minimal models is es- tablished ([BCHM10], [Fuj04], [Fuj05]), but abundance is wide open. In higher dimensions minimal models exists if X is of general type [BCHM10]; abundance not being an issue in this case. In this article we discuss the following natural Question 1.1. Does the MMP work for general (non-algebraic) compact K¨ahler manifolds? His unexpected death came as a tremendous shock to all who knew him. There had not been any danger signals. It was hard to realize that a person of such strong vitality was gone, that such a great mind had been extinguished by a physical failure of the body. Artin was born in Vienna on March 3,1898. He grew up in Reichen- berg, now Tschechoslovakia, then still part of the Austrian empire. His childhood seems to have been lonely. Among the happiest periods was a school year which he spent in France. What he liked best to remember was his enveloping interest in chemistry during his high school days. In his own view, his inclination towards mathematics did not show before his sixteenth year, while earlier no trace of mathe­ matical aptitude had been apparent.1 I have often wondered what kind of experience it must have been for a high school teacher to have a student such as Artin in his class. During the first world war, he was drafted into the Austrian Army. After the war, he studied at the University of Leipzig from which he received his Ph.D. in 1921. He became "Privatdozent" at the Univer­ sity of Hamburg in 1923.

IHÉS became a foundation acknowledged in the public interest in 1981. Like its model, IHÉS has a small number of Permanent Professors (5 presently), and hosts every year some 250 visitors coming from all around the world.     RIGHT IDEALS OF A RING AND SUBLANGUAGES OF SCIENCE Javier Arias Navarro Ph.D. In General Linguistics and Spanish Language http://www.javierarias.info/ Abstract Among Zellig Harris’s numerous contributions to linguistics his theory of the sublanguages of science probably ranks among the most underrated. However, not only has this theory led to some exhaustive and meaningful applications in the study of the grammar of immunology language and its changes over time, but it also illustrates the nature of mathematical relations between chunks or subsets of a grammar and the language as a whole. This becomes most clear when dealing with the connection between metalanguage and language, as well as when reflecting on operators. This paper tries to justify the claim that the sublanguages of science stand in a particular algebraic relation to the rest of the language they are embedded in, namely, that of right ideals in a ring.     Interview with Mikio Sato Mikio Sato is a mathematician of great depth and originality. He was born in Japan in 1928 and re- ceived his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1963. He was a professor at Osaka University and the University of Tokyo before moving to the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) at Ky- oto University in 1970. He served as the director of RIMS from 1987 to 1991. He is now a professor emeritus at Kyoto University. Among Sato’s many honors are the Asahi Prize of Science (1969), the Japan Academy Prize (1976), the Person of Cultural Merit Award of the Japanese Education Ministry (1984), the Fujiwara Prize (1987), the Schock Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1997), and the Wolf Prize (2003). This interview was conducted in August 1990 by the late Emmanuel Andronikof; a brief account of his life appears in the sidebar. Sato’s contributions to mathematics are described in the article “Mikio Sato, a visionary of mathematics” by Pierre Schapira, in this issue of the Notices.
