Parker Department of Evolution, Ecology and Behaviour, Institute of Integrative Biology, University of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 7ZB, United Kingdom Correspondence: [email protected] After brief historic overviews of sexual selection and sexual conflict, I argue that pre-ejacu- latory sexual selection (the form of sexual selection discussed by Darwin) arose at a late stage in an inevitable succession of transitions flowing from the early evolution of syngamy to the evolution of copulation and sex roles. If certain conditions were met, this “sexual cascade” progressed inevitably, if not, sexual strategy remained fixed at a given stage. Prolonged evolutionary history of intense sperm competition/selection under external fertilization preceded the rise of advanced mobility, which generated pre-ejaculatory sexual selection, followed on land by internal fertilization and reduced sperm competition in the form of postcopulatory sexual selection. I develop a prospective model of the early evolution of mobility, which, as Darwin realized, was the catalyst for pre-ejaculatory sexual selection. Stages in the cascade should be regarded as consequential rather than separate phenomena and, as such, invalidate much current opposition to Darwin–Bateman sex roles. Women's Sexual Strategies: The Evolution of Long-Term Bonds and Extrapair Sex Elizabeth G. Pillsworth Martie G. Haselton University of California, Los Angeles Because of their heavy obligatory investment in offspring and limited off spring number, ancestral women faced the challenge of securing sufficient material resources for reproduction and gaining access to good genes. We review evidence indicating that selection produced two overlapping suites of psychological adaptations to address these challenges. The first set involves coupling-the formation of social partnerships for providing biparental care. The second set involves dual mating, a strategy in which women form long term relationships with investing partners, while surreptitiously seeking good genes from extrapair mates. The sources of evidence we review include hunter-gather studies, comparative nonhuman studies, cross-cultural stud· ies, and evidence of shifts in women's desires across the ovulatory cycle. We argue that the evidence poses a challenge to some existing theories of human mating and adds to our understanding of the subtlety of women's sexual strategies. It's not feminism, per se, that's against us. It is certain groups of feminists that are against the application of science for dealing with this problem. Comparative analyses suggest that a variety of factors in¯uence the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds. We analyzed the relative importance of social mating system and sperm competition to sexual differences in plumage and body size (mass and tail and wing length) of more than 1000 species of birds from throughout the world. In these analyses we controlled for phylogeny and a variety of ecological and life-history variables. We used testis size (corrected for total body mass) as an index of sperm competition in each species, because testis size is correlated with levels of extrapair paternity and is available for a large number of species. In contrast to recent studies, we found strong and consistent effects of social mating system on most forms of dimorphism. Social mating system strongly in¯uenced dimorphism in plumage, body mass, and wing length and had some effect on dimorphism in tail length. Sexual dimorphism was relatively greater in species with polygynous or lekking than monogamous mating systems. This was true when we used both species and phylogenetically independent contrasts for analysis. Relative testis size was also related positively to dimorphism in tail and wing length, but in most analyses it was a poorer predictor of plumage dimorphism than social mating system. -

Genetic Determinism As Evolutionary Psychology

London: Vintage, 2001; Richard C. Lewontin, It Ain't Necessarily So: The Dream of the Human Genome and Other Illusions. New York: New York Review of Books, 2000. Alas Poor Darwin and It Ain't Necessarily So are excellent tools to help dispel some of the commonly-promoted ideas about genetic determinism that have become so widespread in both academic and popular writing. Evolutionary psychology (EP) has precursors in both sociobiology and eugenics, yet differs from them, pointedly in that sociobiology was never seriously academically accepted while EP is part of the mainstream of academic programs in psychology, biology and anthropology. However it still serves the important ideological purpose of reinforcing sexism, racism and inequality today. EP is needed because, after all, in a society of equal opportunity and social mobility, how is one to explain differences in social power if not by differences in intrinsic ability? Both books show how genetic determinism - although it is poor science - proclaims itself as the legitimate emperor of twenty-first century psychology. PsycInfo, the major psychological database for psychology literature, shows a dramatic increase in the number of articles on EP in the last 15 years. A search in its three component databases shows that between 1887-1966 there were 5 articles on EP; 1967-1983, 8 articles; but 1984-present, 371 articles. Against this tide, these books take on the necessary task of both defending evolution and opposing neo-Darwinism. -

A faster rate of reproductive gain with body size can occur if larger males are more effective in controlling females and excluding competitors from fertilizations. The most simple consequence of this theoretical scenario, based on sexual allocation theory, is that natural breeding sex ratios are expected to be female biased in female-first sex changers, because average male fecundity will exceed that of females. A second prediction is that the intensity of sperm competition is expected to be lower in female-first sex-changing species because larger males should be able to more completely monopolize females and therefore reduce male–male competition during spawning.
