50Anniversary SPECIAL EDITION Message from the Prioress

e are months into a new year and one that most of us are happy to embrace with hope for Wnew things to come. New beginnings. A fresh breath of what has yet to be. It reminds me of a quote I dearly love from L.M. Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. Anne is a young student on Prince Edward Island talking with her teacher, Miss Stacey, about an unfortunate time in young Anne’s life when she was held in wrong judgment by others. She takes consolation in the principle that the truth will set one free. Anne says it this way, “Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it,” whereas Miss Stacey adds, “with no mistakes in it yet.”

As we enjoy the sacred season of Lent and reach toward the grace of Easter, it is a time for us to look at our lives and revisit our hearts. It is a time to look with determined focus at ourselves with the vision of God and what God wants for us. Are there things that we need to amend or improve? Are there things we are holding on to that God is asking us to release? Are we even brave enough to ask ourselves the things we know we need to ask? Facing the reflection in the Sister Kimberly Prohaska, Prioress mirror of our heart is not easy but necessary. Do we take the time to see ourselves and one another as God sees? Are we willing to gently close our eyes and reopen them to the things that God hopes we will recognize?

In every life stage, whether we are just starting out or well along the way, we have to redirect where we find ourselves. The world has seen much of this recalibrating our lives’ direction with the covid pandemic. We continue to face unrest and the uncertainty surrounding many lives in 2020 and continuing into 2021.

There are times too when we must make decisions we would prefer not to make, and there are moments when things are so comfortable that the challenge is no challenge at all. Think of your life. Why did you make the decisions you did? Some choices we make are easy, others not so much. Some are collaborative, and others completely unilateral. Some choices or determination may be for the betterment of self, whereas others are for the common good. Jesus faced the same choices and decisions that we do. We are all God’s children, and Christ is the Messiah, the chosen one, who entered humanity and chose the Father’s will in every choice set before him. Did he not pray, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” Did Jesus not heal the man with dropsy when he said, ‘I do will it’? Remember, St. Paul was called by the will of God to be an Apostle of Jesus Christ. There are over fifty-seven references to the will of God in Scripture and the call to live out the will of God.

Life is a plethora of life choices. Discernment into religious life is among these choices. There are countless studies on religious life’s viability that show a desire for young people to enter other life paths.

Some believe religious life will fade, that monastic life is eclipsing, and, in some sense, they are correct. I see that accurate view as an intersection from one phase to another. We will never again be the three-hundred in full garb as in the 1950s, nor should we be. I believe we need to be a ‘visible sign’ that attracts and defines who we are to a world in need of women of faith. I think we have much to offer a world that hungers from spiritual starvation and other necessities that only vowed religious life provides. The world needs monastic life as much as a lost person needs a map. I hope that we will be a legacy that St. Benedict and St. Scholastica would be happy with and one that lives beyond our present comprehension.

www.stscho.org 479-783-4147 and Financial Report

In my thirty years as a Benedictine of St. Scholastica, I have seen many women come and go through our monastic doors, whether by death or by choice. We have been examples of what it means to be human; we are women who know our ability to encounter moments of sin and sanctity. We must ready ourselves to make difficult choices about how we see ourselves as monastic women living in the 21st century. We need to nurture the vocations that are here and encourage the Church of tomorrow. The Church began with a small band of twelve men and supportive women by the Lord Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago, and look what became of that faith and trust. That faith and belief have not changed. We still need monastic life, religious life in our world. Our world needs women and men to hear the call from God and not shy away from it or fall into distraction. I believe some young people are being called by God to this way of life but are not alert to the grace within them to answer, and this can be for multiple reasons. Sadly, it may well result in them not living as fully as God intended. I hope that women and men are willing to follow, not count the cost and follow a path to religious life because God does not disappoint us even as we may, at times, disappoint one another because we fall into a well of self-will.

How disposed are we to the will of God at work in our lives? As we pray for the grace to be alert to the will of God over the will of self, may we celebrate the holy time of Lent to Easter with joy. Rejoicing that God knows our frailties and our forbearance for good. May we, like Anne of Green Gables, accept the moments of today while thanking God that we have the hope of tomorrows, always fresh with no mistakes in it –yet.

hank you to all those praying Tfor vocations! We had a great CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED Virtual Discernment Retreat in January. It wasn’t the ideal way to experience our community, but I’m grateful that technology provides a way for us to connect with discerners. Two of the women who attended the retreat will be visiting us soon, with COVID-19 protocols Sister Judith Timmerman, strictly in place. Vocation Director As I write this, the Church is celebrating the World Day of Consecrated Life, which is February 2nd. It is so appropriate, as it is the Feast of the Presentation, in which Jesus is consecrated to God in the temple. As religious the path of God’s commandments, our hearts overflowing sisters, we are consecrated to Christ and to His Church, with the inexpressible delight of love.” along with religious brothers, priests, and hermits. For me, this is all important. St. Benedict tells us “Your way of If you have been thinking about religious life for a long time acting should be different than the world’s way. The love and those thoughts and desires are not going away, now is of Christ should come before all else.” (Rule of Benedict- the time to act. Formation takes several years and there are Chapter 4) many steps along the way. If there is no peace, you at least will know for sure and won’t regret not taking action on As I think of the discerners and hold them in prayer, I am those feelings. I have found the following prayer by Thomas reminded that discernment is ongoing. Both of the women Merton most helpful in my own discernment: who will soon visit us have been in communities that had to close. In this changing world where many communities are “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not “coming to completion”, there is not as much stability as in see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where the past. More and more people are ending up in a different it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I community than they originally joined. My point is that we think that I am following your will does not mean that I am seek to follow God’s will in the moment. We don’t know actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you what tomorrow will bring. does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart Even in this time of uncertainty, God’s love is certain. from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead Benedict tells us of the need to act now and not be afraid. me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. In the Prologue of the Rule we read, “Do not be daunted Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be immediately by fear and run away from the road that leads lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are to salvation. It is bound to be narrow at the outset. But as ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils we progress in this way of life and in faith, we shall run on alone.”
