Squash – An International Sport

140 National Federations

Squash was developed in the middle of the 19 th century by pupils of Harrow School, London. It derived from a sport played against a front wall called “Rackets”. The pupils found that by including side walls the game provided much more excitement and variation. Harrow School built the first squash court in 1864.

The game spread throughout the Commonwealth. Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan became centres of this new dynamic sport and dominated the first official competitions. The International Squash Rackets Federation (ISRF) was formed in 1967, its name being changed in1992 to the World Squash Federation (WSF) which is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the sport.

Today, squash is played on some 40,000 courts organized in 140 countries, all of whom are National Associations, recognised by their National Olympic Committees (NOC). Members have to join one of five Regional Federations creating an integral part of the WSF structure. Actively played as a hobby in more than 185 countries.

The first squash courts in Germany were built in Berlin in 1939, but the sport did not take off until the middle of the 70’s. The number of courts grew to more than 4,000, with almost two million people playing the game – the most impressive growth in the history of squash. In 140 years squash has gone from an English school pastime to become one of the most arduous sports in the world.

The first Men’s World Team Championship was held 1967 in Melbourne, Australia. Other large cities such as Cairo, London, Islamabad, Helsinki and Toronto followed. Paderborn in Germany is a squash metropole in itself and is pleased to welcome the best 200 players in the world to this prestigious event.

Paderborn – The Venue The Place To Be / Fascinating Contrasts

In the heart of Germany, in glorious countryside between the northern lowlands and the mountainous central region, lies an ancient cathedral city and a modern centre of technology: two towns in one, Paderborn.

Cutting-edge technology and medieval achitecture, the future and the past live side by side in harmony here as in hardly any other German city.

Rathaus / Town Hall Paderborn

Paderborn has lived through exciting times. Everywhere you look, you will see the signs of more than 1200 years of history: a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a timber- framed town hall in the Weser Renaissance style, a medieval imperial palace, a baroque Jesuit church, and much, much more.

Just 4 km from the centre, surrounded by 40 hectares of parkland, lies a dreamy moated castle with beautiful baroque gardens. This is Schloss Neuhaus, former seat of Paderborn’s prince bishops and today a treat not to be missed.

Easy access to Paderborn is through the international Paderborn/Lippstadt airport only 20 km from the city centre.

The German National Team

The then West German National Team first competed in the World Men’s Squash Championship in Stockholm, Sweden 1981. With a final placing of 16 th ahead of the present power house France followed by Kuwait, Norway and Monaco. After this positive first experience unfortunately due to the vast distance and cost of the next event being hosted in Auckland, New Zealand West Germany did not participate. German squash continued to develop and the national team competed in Cairo, Egypt finishing in 8 th place in 1985.

After the early domination of Australia, Pakistan soon ruled the squash world after taking their 4 th consecutive victory in 1987. France made steady progress during this time with Australia coming back strongly to win the following two championships. Germany continued to hold their own but continued to suffer by being in the lower draw of the competition. East and West Germany reunited in 1989 and then formed the German National Team. They have since finished in the top half of the event equalling their highest placing of eighth.

German coach Oliver Pettke is working hard with his men to produce a good result on home soil in August 2011. At the age of 23 team captain Simon Roesner was holder of the the junior european individual and team event gold medals with Germany in 2006. He now holds a top 30 world ranking position and is 4 times national champion unbeaten in Germany since 11/2006. Playing on 2 is Jens Schoor also aged 23 (Squash Club Worms), ranked in the top 100 in the world and keenly motivated. André Haschker (28), Rudi Rohrmueller (19), Raphael Kandra (20), and Norman Junge (21) all young atheletes providing coach Pettke with a difficult decision when he submits his final selection for the WMTC 2011 in Paderborn.
