24 NOTES ON THE FOUR BUCKINGHAMSHIRE PARISHES IN THE. ARCHDEACONRY OF ST. ALBANS [By A. J. CLEAR] In the year 1219 an agreement was come to between the Abbot of St. Albans and the Bishop of Lincoln that the Bishop should not interfere with the presen-tation or ordination to the four parishes of Abbots Aston, Horwode parva, Gnenesberge and Wynselowe, but should leave the same entirely under the charge of the Abbot. Later on several efforts were made by subsequent Bishops of Lincoln to upset this agree-ment, and finally it was carried into the Court of the King, who confirmed it. These four parishes appear to have formed part of " The Peculiar, " called the Deanery of the Arch-deaconry of St. Albans, and to have been included in the Liberty of St. Albans ( which still exists ) until 1549, or even later, as a patent of James I. speaks of " Libertatis Dei Albani in Commitatibus Hertfordiae, Buckinghamie et Bedfordiae," and although cut off from the Liberty in 1539 they were still, according to Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of 1835, in the Archdeaconry of St. Albans. Under these circumstances, for many years the record of presentation to Livings and of the proving of wills is to be found in the rolls of St. Albans Abbey (not in the Lincoln Registers), some of which are preserved in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, but un-fortunately more often than not with leaves missing at the end and the beginning. The items which have come under the writer's notice also include three presentations to Little Kimble and five to Wingrave, both of which parishes belonged to St.

Buckingham TownMatters Autumn issue 2016 twinning lenborough hoard events review upcoming events grant applications volunteer appeals 1 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear All, My fellow councillors very kindly decided to re-elect me for a second term as Mayor of our great town of Buckingham, and my Mayoress will again be my daughter Leah. The Fringe Week went well; we had a new event of making and flying kites. This was well attended and my thanks to Buckingham Primary School for allowing their grounds to be used for this event. Regrettably the kite I made did not fly, so back to the drawing board for next year. The Dog Show in Bourton Park was well attended and we were again lucky with the weather which helped make this another successful event. Three councillors and I visited various gardens in town that had entered our ‘Buckingham in Bloom’ competition and the Joint First prize winners were Mr & Mrs Liddle and Mr. Wilkins. The First prize for the best Community Garden went to Brooks Court. My sincere thanks to the Twinning Association for organising and going ahead with the Bastille Day Boules Tournament in the Cattle Pens on Friday 15th July, and thank you the people of Buckingham who turned up to honour and support our dear friends in France, so soon after the tragedy in Nice. I hope you all had a good summer and are looking forward to the Charter Fair in October and the Bonfire and Fireworks display in Bourton Park in November. Cllr. Andy Mahi August 2016 2 TWINNING At twenty past ten on a balmy summer’s The Twinning Association exists to enable evening in Buckingham, a gripping sporting everyone to enjoy a taste of the real France event was fought out between French and and the real Germany, beyond the tourist English players in the Cattle Pens in front facade.

  • The Hidation of Buckinghamshire. Keith Bailey
THE HIDA TION OF BUCKINGHAMSHIRE KEITH BAILEY In a pioneering paper Mr Bailey here subjects the Domesday data on the hidation of Buckinghamshire to a searching statistical analysis, using techniques never before applied to this county. His aim is not explain the hide, but to lay a foundation on which an explanation may be built; to isolate what is truly exceptional and therefore calls for further study. Although he disclaims any intention of going beyond analysis, his paper will surely advance our understanding of a very important feature of early English society. Part 1: Domesday Book 'What was the hide?' F. W. Maitland, in posing purposes for which it may be asked shows just 'this dreary old question' in his seminal study of how difficult it is to reach a consensus. It is Domesday Book,1 was right in saying that it almost, one might say, a Holy Grail, and sub• is in fact central to many of the great questions ject to many interpretations designed to fit this of early English history. He was echoed by or that theory about Anglo-Saxon society, its Baring a few years later, who wrote, 'the hide is origins and structures. grown somewhat tiresome, but we cannot well neglect it, for on no other Saxon institution In view of the large number of scholars who have we so many details, if we can but decipher have contributed to the subject, further discus• 2 them'. Many subsequent scholars have also sion might appear redundant. So it would be directed their attention to this subject: A.

See Principles on main webpage. Village, woodland, nature reserves, hills, views In Brief This truly unforgettable walk shows you all that is best in the Chiltern Hills. You go through great beechwoods, along valleys and over the Bledlow Ridge with terrific views. The walk begins and ends in a snug Chiltern village which holds its own surprises. The village has one of the iconic pubs of the Chilterns (to enquire at the Lions of Bledlow , ring 01844-343345). Along the way, you can stop at the Boot in the Ridge (ring 01494-481499). You also pass one of the great foodie pubs (see text), requiring long advance booking. This walk is a tribute to Raymond Hugh’s Adventurous Walks books, since it follows the same route as one of his walks. These books are out of print but still possibly available by mail order and the other nine walks are also a pleasure to do. There are only a few nettles on this walk and sensible shoes should be adequate in dry weather.
