EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. 2006 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc will be held on Tuesday February 7th 2006 at a venue to be advised.

As per the Club’s constitution, all Executive and General Committee positions will be declared vacant on the night and nominations and elections will be held to vote in new, or re elected officers.

All members are encouraged to attend and become involved in the day-to-day running of the Club by nominating for positions available on the Executive or General Committees or to join any of the sub- committees which are formed for organisational purposes.

The Executive will have responsibility for the day to day operation of the Club and will be assisted by a General Committee comprised of elected and appointed officers.

In 2005 we had very limited response from members to work on sub committees and we encourage everybody to be involved in any capacity. In particular we would want to reform the Social committee to ensure an active social season in 2006.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. WHAT IS THE YEAR BOOK ALL ABOUT?

The history of any sporting club is vitally important as the years roll by. In the case of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc, we have some significant history emanating from the Falcons at Baulkham Hills.

Since 1976 when the Club was first founded, many people have put time and effort into ensuring that nothing is missed in a particular season in relation to results, winners of awards and general recollections of each season.

We at the Eagles intend to maintain that unbroken record of publishing full financial details of the organisation and writing about the highs and the lows of life around our Football Club. For those who have maintained copies of previous Annual Reports, there is great pleasure to be had in reviewing past editions and reading about the kids who have progressed right through the various age groups and on to success at a senior level in the Sydney AFL and beyond.

They can also be used to settle arguments as to who did what and when and in time will be invaluable aids to future generations of East Coast administrators, players and supporters. We are always on the look out for different aspects to our history and how and what should be recorded.

The editors will always accept suggestions from members and players as to how we can do it better for those who will read this document in 10, 20, 30 years time. Its importance to the history of the Club cannot be underestimated.

Please enjoy this year’s edition and we hope that it provides an hour or two of enjoyment for those who support our Club.

Don’t forget as well that our excellent website at www.eastcoasteagles.com.au is fully maintained by Digital Sports Productions and is interactive with it’s own professional Guestbook / Message Board where Members can exchange views on all sorts of topics to do with AFL footy and in particular our Club and the Sydney AFL. Match reports from all Grades are posted weekly along with great news items. The Photo Gallery is updated weekly by Peter Physick with his excellent action shots and player portraits.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

PETER PHYSICK

It is hard to put into words just how empty the year felt after the completion of Round 18 in late August. Notwithstanding the excellent season Reserve Grade had in being narrowly beaten in the Grand Final, the ultimate goal of a footy club like ours is about playing in the Senior Grade’s finals and thus giving ourselves a reasonable shot at winning a First Grade flag.

As readers will know we didn’t achieve that and we were yet again left lamenting what might have been.

Last year I wrote at this same time that perhaps we should poll our supporters to find out what is the most important outcome of running the Club. Was it to be profitable? Was it to groom elite footballers? Was it to benefit the community? Was it to have fun? Or was it to win a First Grade Premiership?

Certainly in my mind it is now the latter because we have already achieved the rest. Andrew Baxter tells us on Page 17 that we are debt free and profitable. Steve Gawley tells us on Page 19 that all sponsors are re-signed again for 2006 with more wanting to get in on the action. The junior development program is under way as you will read from David Ralston’s report on Page 13. Lots more needs to be done in that regard however and we have significant plans to beef up that program. Our community involvement is top class now that we have linked up with the Kellyville Lions Club. Richard Lee provides all that excellent feedback on Page 21. Our player recruitment program through Graeme Merkel’s Football Operations Dept provided fresh new talent for 2005 which he summarises on Page 27.

I delayed preparing my thoughts for this page until after I had received the individual reports from the various coaches and officers who are charged with providing feedback for their respective divisions of the Club. All acknowledge in their own way that again we fell short of the benchmark that is finals football. In particular I looked forward to reading what the Senior Coach had to say and how he would handle the disappointment of the season just gone. I commend you to read Rohan Graham’s report on Page 38 as it very succinctly sums up how everyone would be feeling and what his year was like. It was always going to be difficult for a coach to come into a new Club and to a city he hadn’t lived in before, then take charge of a group of young men and send them around in a competition that he hadn’t heard of before, let alone know of the standard.

In my mind Rohan underestimated what was required and the methods needed to succeed in Sydney football, which these days is a lot stronger than people give it credit for. That is not intended as criticism of him or his Match Committee. More an acknowledgement that there was plenty of steam left in the kettle. We all need to learn from our under achievement in 2005 and strengthen our resolve to exhibit our full capabilities in 2006. To demonstrate our full confidence in “Fixer’s” ability to do the job, we have re appointed him as the senior coach and his Business Plan submitted to the Board for next season has been accepted. With the benefit of that 12 months experience, we go into 2006 with renewed confidence and a full list of players.

To offset the disappointing on field results it was with huge excitement that Sept 13th brought forth the final decision from Council to allocate East Coast Eagles tenure of the land currently known as Withers Road Reserve in Rouse Hill / Kellyville. More than eight years had gone by during which Club Officials both negotiated with and lobbied various Mayors, Councillors and officers of the Baulkham Hills Shire Council. It will be only the second purpose built AFL ground in Sydney. The other one being Erskineville Oval in Newtown. It will have the same dimensions as the MCG ground wise, but the accompanying facilities will fall short of the MCG standard I’m afraid!! However as the years go by and with the assistance of the other consortium members, Cricket NSW, the AFL & Kellyville Magpies, we will progress the amenities to what we need, including our own on site Social Club. Significant thanks go to Chris Bilkey for his undivided attention to achieving that outcome. Chris tells us all about it on Page 18.

______8 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. East Coast is blessed with having some great people associated with it. For that we should always be eternally grateful, however on occasions we lack the manpower to fulfill the various tasks that volunteers are needed for. We have run the Club this year without some of the traditional general and sub committees that are so necessary to spread the load. In particular we failed again this year to have a comprehensive social program locked away. At corporate level Steve Gawley has that humming along beautifully, but it is within the supporter and player ranks where functions are needed which aren’t necessarily fund raisers. But they are needed to raise the fun barometer. The Annual General Meeting is being held Tuesday February 7th 2006 and I strongly urge those readers not directly involved with the Eagles to come along and nominate to get on one of those committees.

Congratulations go to Steve Gawley who has increased finances raised from sponsorship and fund raising by 16% to $179,912. He certainly is outstanding at his craft and his passion for the Eagles is unsurpassed. Already he has guaranteed that 2006 will be more of the same and we acknowledge and welcome the return of two of our three Premium Sponsors PMA Solutions and Loscam in 2006. Unfortunately the Corus Hotel Sydney could not back up again as it is now the Travelodge!! We thank good friend and ally Craig Barber for his well founded support over the years. A replacement Premium sponsor for the Corus has been identified however at the time of writing incomplete negotiations do not allow me to reveal the successful company. All home match day sponsors are back in place, and with a waiting list. We acknowledge all those fine companies on Pages 19 & 20.

At the beginning of the year we gained the services of Dave Ralston as our General Manager and I thank Dave for his input into the day to day running of the Club. At the same time as Dave arrived, so did “Kiwi” or Greg Krieger as he is sometimes known. Greg was appointed to the Board on his arrival in Sydney but had to step down in July when he moved back to Queensland and already is missed by many. His replacement is Michael Pilkington a long time Club supporter and a very astute and successful businessman. “Pilko’s” input into the future strategic direction of the East Coast Eagles is eagerly anticipated. Andrew Baxter arrived back into Sydney after a few years in Melbourne and he immediately accepted our invitation to replace the retiring Bob Wynne as our Finance Manager. “Billy’s” expertise in all matters football both on field and off field at Old Haileybury in the VAFA will hold us in very good stead.

And finally may I pay homage to the incredible work ethic continually displayed by Graeme Merkel. His knowledge of available footballers coming to Sydney, even whether they have thought of it yet themselves or not, is remarkable and surely must now be amongst the best in the business in the recruitment field. Graeme’s overall awareness in this market combined with the local Victorian knowledge of Rohan Graham and Dave Ralston, the South Australian scene being covered by Jon Vlatko, Craig Robinson and Ben Physick and the connection through West Coast Eagles, means that our pipeline of experienced footballers coming through is very strong to supplement the inflow of juniors from the local Clubs.

In conclusion my thanks go to the continual encouragement amply demonstrated by West Coast through Trevor Nisbett and David Elliott. I have often dreamed about two specific events occurring and they will now happen simultaneously. Firstly our own ground and secondly having the opportunity to repay West Coast for their unwavering support. This will come in the years to follow with the introduction of the proposed Apprenticeship Scheme in which every AFL Club must draft a Sydney player each and every year. Our Club is very well placed to offer significant input to this process.

Best wishes and thanks to everybody who was a part of the Eagles this year ……

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. GENERAL MANAGER

DAVE RALSTON Twelve months ago when I took on the General Manager's role here at East Coast Eagles I did so with great expectation and a little bit of naivety. While I had a vast range of football experience I was to find out that Sydney footy is a unique and different beast. I didn't realise that throughout the year I would also have to be a goal umpire, boundary umpire, runner, water boy, strapper, time keeper, groundsman, score board attendant and umpires’ escort.

Now all that is a great learning experience, but it does show one of the biggest problems Sydney footy and in turn East Coast has, is a distinct lack of footy people willing to get involved in any capacity. Although the Eagles are lucky enough to have many great volunteers, but more are needed.

East Coast has got some of the very best footy people you could ever wish to meet. Firstly I can not speak highly enough of Steve Gawley and I want to thank him for all his tireless work during the year. His sponsorship luncheons are a brilliant idea and a not to be missed event. His direct and forthright manner gets things done and he is a massive asset to this Football Club. Once again, thank you Steve.

Secondly in Peter Physick we are extremely lucky to have the best President of a football club I've ever seen. His calmness, diplomacy and clear thinking are invaluable and I'd like to thank him for all his help this year. And now that we have secured our new ground and facilities at Withers Rd, I'm sure Peter will stay on to oversee his dream of getting the local team back into the local area and into the finals on a regular basis. The rest of the Board made up of Chris Bilkey, Andrew Baxter, Graham Merkel and the recently appointed Mike Pilkington have been a joy to work with and with their combined football and business acumen, the Club is in good hands.

The East Coast Eagles are blessed to have a partnership with the most professional sporting organisation in the country, the West Coast Eagles. The support, advice and friendship, plus strength of brand and credibility they give to us are some of the best assets this club has. For that a huge vote of thanks must go to Trevor Nisbett, David Elliott and Jacqui Sawley and we look forward to the relationship continuing and growing.

Along the way there have been many others who have made my job easier and or contributed in a valuable way to the Eagles’ cause including the Best Physio in NSW Matt Stewart and his helpers Simon West and Keryn Milford. Thankyou to the Angels who are very friendly and welcoming and the mothers of the players especially Leone Ure and Viv Merkel, surely two of the nicest ladies in Sydney. Thanks to all of you.

On field in 2005 was ultimately disappointing because our goal very realistically was to make the finals and that was not achieved. Positives along the way like the development of young players such as Brad Ure and under 18 players Phil Entwisle and James Ford just to name a few, were very encouraging plus the on going competitiveness of the Reserves is a plus. Special mention should go to Luke McLeod for winning the Sanders Medal. Luke plays his heart out for the club every week and can look forward to playing a lot more senior footy. I would also like to thank the team managers for the year in Alan Brotherston, Ross Abercrombie and Kiwi and Paul Thripp in Firsts, Reserves and Under 18's respectively. Like all good team managers, they went about their jobs with a minimum of fuss and a high level of efficiency.

Now with an eye to the future, I think we can look forward very positively as the Board has established a sound financial platform and the coaching staff have put together a playing group that can take us into 2006 and beyond with success.

This is now the only option for the mighty East Coast Eagles. ______10 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. WEST COAST EAGLES

A terrific first year ….. by DAVID ELLIOTT

As the West Coast Eagles’ appointed contact for the East Coast Eagles, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first opportunity to strengthen our Clubs’ relationship over the last 12 months. It has truly broadened my awareness of the passion and enthusiasm East Coast people have for the AFL and the West Coast Eagles.

From the outset, a primary objective was to create greater internal awareness of the relationship between the two clubs. Short-term, this has created further interest in the Sydney competition from our employees and player group, and, long-term, will put the East Coast Eagles in a promising position for future on-field and off-field opportunities arising from our relationship.

As a point of accommodation, the West Coast Eagles hosted Rohan Graham and David Ralston, inviting them to spend four days with our coaches, football staff Kim Hannah, Ian Miller and Neil Ross and our chief executive Trevor Nisbett. Rohan and David were present at our club’s Wednesday morning staff meeting and discussed the importance of the ongoing relationship.

The East Coast Eagles e-mail update was also circulated to all staff each week and regular progress reports were given at our Wednesday meetings. In addition to this, regular events were enjoyed by all throughout the season, notably in round 17 when West Coast travelled to Sydney to play the Swans. To kick off the weekend, West Coast Eagles coaches and Tim Gepp attended the East Coast Eagles Sponsors’ Luncheon at the North Ryde Golf Club on Friday, July 22.

John Worsfold addressed the East Coast Eagles player group at the SCG on their way to play St George while Trevor Nisbett, Peter Sumich, Tony Micale and saw East Coast comfortably account for the Crows at Alan Davidson Oval. Unfortunately, the West Coast Eagles’ result the following day was disappointing but we caught up at the post-match function at the Paddington RSL to reflect on the positives of the weekend.

West Coast Eagles great remained in Sydney and conducted school clinics with David on July 25 and 26. He also enjoyed the chance to attend East Coast Eagles training on the Tuesday evening and speak with the player group about his experiences throughout 276 games at the elite level.

I truly believe that we have made significant progress throughout 2005 in educating West Coast Eagles staff on the benefits of the East Coast Eagles relationship and this can only help to strengthen the affiliation in years to come.

We also thank you for including our Home Supporter Group membership within your program, which we hope will endorse what’s been achieved thus far.

On behalf of the West Coast Eagles, I would like to thank the players, support staff and Board of the East Coast Eagles for their camaraderie and support of their club, the West Coast Eagles and Australian football. Although a Premiership wasn’t won between us this year, both clubs made a marked improvement and can both look forward to what 2006 promises.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. JUNIOR CLUB / SCHOOLS LIAISON

DAVID RALSTON

The East Coast Eagles were very active this year in promoting AFL football throughout the schools in Sydney. We were closely involved in over 50 school visits where we would host a football clinic, organise a range of games or just talk to the children about football and the benefits it can have in your life. Such as the healthy life style and the great friendships you can make along the way.

The response to these visits was extremely positive, especially from the dozen schools which were lucky enough to have Eagles legend Glen Jakovich visit them the week after West Coast played the Swans here in Sydney. Glen had a terrific rapport with the kids as his commanding presence and happy outgoing nature make him perfect for school visits. Glen was very generous with his time and a tremendous help to both East Coast Eagles and football in Sydney and for this we thank him greatly.

The Eagles also had an elevated presence at many of the Paul Kelly Cup days, AFL gala day and “9 a side” competitions with either David Ralston or senior coach Rohan Graham attending to help the kids with a few tips and / or to do some umpiring to help out the under staffed AFL development team. With good numbers and great enthusiasm at many of these carnivals, footy in Sydney looks to be on the way up. Much of the praise for this should go to the heads of development in our area in Glen Waide and Simon Wilson whom the Eagles look forward to working closely with in the future.

Also this year relationships with the junior clubs in the area such as Baulkham Hills Falcons, Quakers Hill Bombers and Kellyville Magpies were maintained with a foundation built that will allow us to launch in to 2006 and develop these relationships much further, so they are very positive for all involved.

With all this going on it is very helpful that a few of the Eagles players took time out of their busy schedules to attend many of these school and club visits. This team was headed by Tim Physick who regularly gave up his time to help with the Arndell College program. Plus throughout the year Simon Marshall, Adam Lovett, Jason Duss, Sam Wood, Blair Oliver and even our new 2006 recruit Mark Goodey made valuable contributions in this area.

We look forward to 2006 knowing that while substantial steps were made in 2005, we as a Premier League Football Club have a lot to offer and can have a very positive influence on the development of AFL football in Sydney.

PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS - 2005

1. ECE Player Life Membership will be awarded to any player who provides 10 years of playing service, not necessarily consecutive, from and including games played (minimum of one) in any grade from and including the year 2000 onwards. 2. Past service (in playing years) with the BHAFC can be included in determining eligibility.

Comments in italics are taken from the Annual Report for the player’s first year of football at the Club.

DAVID HOOK ….. The smallest player in the team who joined the Hawks during the season after showing good skills in Auskick. What he lacked in height he certainly made up for with courage. Next year we will no doubt see an even greater improvement. U/9 Hawks 1996

David is an outstanding young footballer who has spent his entire playing career at the Baulkham Hills Falcons and has now commenced with East Coast. He is the “tough as teak Mr Reliable” that every coach would want in their side. In 2005 David showed his versatility by kicking some valuable goals up forward as well as being one of the best backmen in the business.

JAYDEN PENDLETON ….. Was the smallest player in the team but always attacked the ball even up against much bigger players. Jayden loved to play on and threw the dummy at every opportunity. Tends to over indulge the handball, but with many years in front of him, he will develop. U/9 Kookas 1996

Like David, Jayden has known no other Club than the Baulkham Hills Falcons where he has played all his football years. Even though the family lives a long way out of the area now, he is still with the Hills based East Coast Eagles where he has become a classy footballer blessed with some silky skills. With the benefit of a year’s experience and a couple of kilos gained over the summer, Jayden should be something special in 2006.

CHRIS WYNNE …… Chris was another new player being a convert from soccer. Along with his younger brother he fitted in well to the team. Chris was another of our bigger players who will improve with more experience. By continuing to pay attention at training Chris will develop into a fine player. U/9 Kookas 1995

Chris unfortunately did not play as many games as he would have liked this year due to the large number of players on the senior list. However, his dedication to training and his work ethic were an example to all the players around him. It is obvious when you see Chris at training or in a match, that he loves his football and when given his limited opportunities this year he did his best to carry out instructions as they were given to him. Chris is a credit to himself and his family and we hope that he can continue to enjoy his football for many years to come.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. VALE STEVE JACKSON

It was with tremendous sadness that we awoke on the morning of September 2nd 2005 to hear news of the death of Steve Jackson in a car accident near Port Macquarie.

Steve, or “Jacko” as we knew him, was on his way to Queensland when the car he and his girlfriend Courtney were driving in was hit by an out of control vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Steve died instantly and Courtney escaped with minor injuries.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Steve’s parents Debbie and Ken and sister Julee, as they attempt to cope with the tragedy.

Jacko was a Rugby League boy through and through and it wasn’t until he discovered AFL Football that he realised he was pretty good at it. But he continued playing both up to 1994 when Aussie Rules won out in the end.

1993 was his first year where he played with the Kookas at Baulkham Hills in the Under 13’s to learn the game. In 1994 he was still eligible for that age group and not only did he master the code, he won the Best & Fairest. In 1995 it was up to the U/15’s where he was the Runner Up to James Vassett and in 1996 he was again the Runner Up in the B&F but this time to Scott Henretty. Steve was also rewarded with Sydney Representative honours in 1996.

In 1997 he had a stellar year. The Under 16’s were Premiers and Jacko also won the Northside Association Best & Fairest for that age group. Not being satisfied with just playing under age football, Steve like so many of his mates, also played in the Falcons’ Under 18 team in the SFL and went on to win yet another Premiership in that same year with Les Jarjoura’s team.

His U/16 coach in ’97 (Jason Crawford) had this to say about a young Steve Jackson. “Congratulations on winning the Association’s Best & Fairest. This has capped off a great season by one of the toughest ball getters in the competition. What Steve lacked in height, he made up for in heart. He will enter 1998 full of confidence which should see him go on and be a dominant force in senior football”.

1998 came along and Jacko did dominate once again. He made his debut in First Grade with three games but it was the matches he played in the U/18’s where he took the Umpires’ eye, as he won the prestigious Sydney Football League’s Kealey Medal accumulating 18 votes from just 11 matches. Not unnaturally, he also won the Falcons B&F defeating good friend Clint Austerberry by one vote.

In 1999 he played 14 First Grade Falcons’ games under Craig McGrath, but his time available for football was gradually being eroded by his desire to build a business. Consequently Jacko drifted away from football but not from his life long friends. He always kept in touch and in fact we are delighted to say he pulled on an East Coast jumper in 2000 for a couple of games, but the business won in the end.

Last year Steve travelled to Cairns with the Eagles on their Footy Trip, such was his keenness to stay in touch with football and its family of friends. After all you can’t totally walk away after 143 games …….

Jacko, we will always remember you and hold you fondly in our hearts.

Rest in Peace old mate ……

Notes: This season the Club had three major financial goals - to raise additional funds to facilitate the appointment of a General Manager, to repay all debt, and to return a modest profit that would lay the foundation for future developments such as the new ground. All of these goals have been achieved, by the appointment of Dave Ralston, the final $10,034 of debt repaid, and a profit returned of $741.

This has been the result of both maximising income opportunities and ensuring expenditure items remained within the budget set at the beginning of the season. Steve Gawley in particular has shown an enormous commitment to driving additional income, with sponsorship and fund raising netting $179,912, an increase of $24,361 over season 2004. As with all sponsorship and fundraising activities, there are costs associated with obtaining such increases, and these expenses increased by $14,481 over last season. However, the great news was that the nett result was an additional $9,915 into the club's bank account, compared with season 2004.

______17 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc.

Other than the decisions to invest once more in a Club General Manager ($26,000) and repay all debt ($10,034), expenditure remained consistent, if not slightly lower, than 2003 and 2004 levels, due to savings in some areas and minor but important investment increases in others such as our Physios and Trainers’ fees and medical supplies - we certainly had our share of injuries this season.

It is worth noting also, that GST is listed as a separate line item for the first time this season.

A special thanks to Peter Physick for his weekly efforts in processing and banking incoming cash and cheques and to Jodee Vincent at Base Course Management for maintaining the financial reports so desired by the Tax man. ANDREW BAXTER

FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT

CHRIS BILKEY

September 13th 2005 was a day worth celebrating for the East Coast Eagles. It was the day on which the Baulkham Hills Shire Council voted unanimously to assign tenancy of a development site in Kellyville to Holroyd/Hills Cricket Club, Kellyville Magpies Junior Aussie Rules Club, and to East Coast Eagles.

This ground, to be developed in Withers Road will become the elusive home ground for the Club. You may think it has been a long time between Premiership drinks for the Swans. The pursuit of a home ground for ECE in the Shire has seemed every bit as long, and, like the Swans’ victory, makes success that much sweeter.

To long time workers within the Club who pushed our cause with the Council and Councillors over many years, we owe a great debt. In particular, we must thank John Evernden who was tireless in his efforts to champion our cause and on whose shoulders this outcome was built.

The ground will be developed over the next 18 months and will be purpose built for AFL and cricket. It will include lighting which is adequate not only for training but for night games as well. Its dimensions and facilities are expected to make it a focal point for AFL (NSW/ACT) to showcase Sydney’s senior competition. We expect to play our first match there in the first home game of the 2007 season.

Between now and then, much needs to be done. While the Council will be funding the majority of the cost, there will be an additional cost of more than $500,000 to provide the facilities we and the other tenants are seeking. This additional funding must be met by the tenants, their parent bodies [AFL (NSW/ACT) & Cricket NSW] and possibly through Government grants.

To coordinate with Council on the development of the site and to facilitate a united approach to funding, a committee representing all stakeholders is being established. For every ECE Club Member there is the opportunity to contribute, in a variety of ways to the creation of the Eagles’ nest. Once completed there is no doubt that it will be the premier venue in the Sydney AFL. A ground where the 50m arc is a 50 m arc, where players are given a flat grassed surface to play on and most importantly, it is our home ground!!

Finally the Club should acknowledge the influential role undertaken by AFL (NSW/ACT) in helping to secure the ground. In particular the Strategic Projects Manager Clare Toia-Bailey, whose enthusiasm and determination has been critical in getting us over the line.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS

STEVE GAWLEY

The cost of running any football club increases annually and in East Coast Eagles’ case, we again survived and prospered for another year thanks to the fantastic support of our sponsors in 2005.

In 2005, the Major Sponsor’s Draw was not carried out as three key areas of sponsorship were achieved:

1. Premium Sponsors.

PMA Solutions: Guernsey – Back Sponsor.

Phil Okill and his company, PMA Solutions offered their support and sponsorship at the end of 2004 and were welcomed throughout 2005 as an East Coast Eagles inaugural Premium Sponsor. Phil Okill’s support, both personal and financial, is greatly appreciated by the Club and we look forward to continuing our association in 2006.

Corus Hotels Sydney: Guernsey – Front Sponsor.

Craig Barber, a long time supporter of East Coast Eagles, again stepped up in 2005 and became a Premium Sponsor whose support and enthusiasm continued throughout the year. Although Corus Hotels Sydney was sold in mid 2005, Craig continued to sponsor the Club for the year and his contribution is very much appreciated.

Loscam: Shorts Sponsor.

Barry Wellard and Loscam became our third Premium Sponsor for 2005 and in their first year of sponsorship for the club contributed both personally and financially. Loscam employees, Nick Trask and Jon Vlatko, also played successfully for East Coast Eagles and we look forward to their continuing association in 2006.

2. Match Day Sponsors.

The concept of Match Day Sponsors, introduced in 2004, again rolled into 2005 with the full diary for 2005 fixtures being secured immediately they were offered. The Match Day Sponsorship includes signage, entry and public acknowledgement on each home match day and the concept has now become East Coast Eagles home game culture.

In 2005, the East Coast Eagles Match Day Sponsors were:

Round Sponsor 1 Base Course Management Pty Ltd 3 All State Roads Pty Ltd 6 ProGroup Management 8 Custom Fleet 13 Sapphire Mortgage Services 14 Coulton Isaac Barber 16 Banjo Books 18 Wirtgen Australia

______19 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. 2006 Match Day Sponsorship is already fully subscribed with the majority of 2004 and 2005 sponsors accepting our invitation to again be an East Coast Eagles “Match Day Sponsor”.

East Coast Eagles sincerely thanks all 2005 Match Day Sponsors, their employees and club helpers for making this form of sponsorship a major success for the club.

3. Club Sponsors.

Again in 2005, our Club Sponsors stepped forward and supported East Coast both financially and personally. • Mike Pilkington of Taxi Clothing put his hand up as soon as the 2004 season was finished and “Pilko’s” support and sponsorship of our club is exemplary. • Craig Barber of Corus Hotel Sydney again supplied accommodation packages to East Coast supporters and provided world class facilities at his hotel up until its sale in June. • Keith Cormican and Paul Elliott of Custom Fleet supplied the club’s vehicle and vocal support. • Jan and Arthur Frost from Lamson Paragon Group of Companies along with Rod Frost at Chequemates Pty Ltd again supported the Eagles in 2005. • Craig and Scott Abercrombie from Digital Sports again provided personal and professional services at all Eagles games. • Leonie and Frank Ure of Kenthurst Printing Machinery Sales yet again leading the vocal cheering in 2005. • Chris Bilkey at Banjo Books who as well as being a Match Day Sponsor, supported the Reserves’ Best & Fairest weekly awards. • Jodee Vincent and the team at Base Course Management Pty Ltd and many others.

Every year, the Football Club puts out its hands to receive the generosity and financial support of our many supporters. Again in 2005, one of the encouraging and positive aspects of sponsorship was the acceptance and confirmation of long term support from previous sponsors from a wide field of businesses. Peter and Helen Brady along with Jon Gawley of Sapphire Mortgage Services continued their support of East Coast Eagles in 2005, John Geary and staff at Wirtgen Australia, Ken McCracken and Don Stein as Directors of ProGroup Management Pty Ltd, Jan Barber and Shane Windsor of Coulton Isaac Barber, Tania Shade of IMG Group who again donated generously to our annual auction and Paul Coughlan of All State Roads who, after completing his duties as President for Campbelltown Football Club, then joined the Eagles, post-game, to present the Match Day Sponsors Award!

We are indebted to Lea Goodrem from Goodrem Management who offered her daughter’s fame (and time) to benefit the Football Club by way of auctioning a personal appearance from Delta. I happen to personally know that the successful buyer was thrilled with his purchase.

There are many sponsors and supporters who donate both time and money to the club who we may have missed in our summary above, so to them, thankyou. Also, a very big thankyou to the East Coast Eagles supporters who turn up, week after week, and scream for their team. Leading the “screams” this year were the “East Coast Angels,” Laima Physick, Maree Murphy, Viv Merkel, Laurel Abercrombie, Leonie Ure, Margaret Harvey and all the many, many others who are true Eagles Coast Eagles supporters.

2005 was an extremely successful year for East Coast Eagles in maintaining, securing and consolidating the financial future for the Club over many future years. The securing of sponsors is an ongoing task with new and innovative ideas continually being appraised and acted upon by the Club. As I have mentioned previously, the hard working committee, on behalf of the Club, wishes to whole heartedly thank all those sponsors, supporters, helpers, assistants and people who have helped in 2005.

Roll on 2006!!!!!

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CANTEEN REPORT

RICHARD LEE

It’s funny how a chance comment can lead to so many interrelated benefits.

As we all know, running a canteen for a Football Club is a tough job. Lots of hours and lots of people are required to make a success of it. I made the ‘off the cuff’ statement to Peter Physick at the AGM that we should get a Service Club involved.

I started looking around for a group to take on the task of running the canteen at Alan Davidson Oval, but to no avail. I then made the suggestion to the Kellyville Lions and after some initial reluctance they agreed to take on the task.

A lot of hours in preparation, a lot of hours in running the canteen, a lot of work from many folks with Kevin and Diane Coad being the backbone of the operation. Di and Kevin were at all of the games and managed the logistics magnificently. Quite a few of the Lions Club members attended and worked on the canteen and it was a great success.

Those Lions Club members who worked on the canteen were most impressed with the supporters and players and commented to me on how well behaved all the people were and at the manner in which our Club conducts itself. They thought that the manners displayed by our players were great.

I believe that we had a great canteen this season with an excellent range of food and drinks, good value for money, and an opportunity to contribute to some of the needs of the community.

The East Coast Eagles’ desire for the funds generated by the canteen to be used in the Hills District Community area is a strong indicator of the Club’s interest and involvement in their local community. The highest praise is to be conveyed to Club members for this strong Community minded action. It has been applauded by all Lions Club members who are involved in most areas of the Hills community including the local Council.

The Kellyville Lions Club Board of Directors has decided to use the major portion of the funds raised to support the Tallowood School for severely disabled children in Kellyville with a smaller sum to be provided back to ECE to assist with their ongoing work in the development of youth sport in the Hills District.

The actions of the Eagles in the support of the local community cannot be highly enough praised. It truly sets the benchmark for all other sporting clubs in the district.

We look forward to the Kellyville Lions involvement with the ECE again next year.

They say that lightning can’t strike twice in the same place, but at the East Coast Eagles it can and does.

The President’s Award was created solely to recognise that person who does more than they ever should have to do in any one year. I don’t think that anyone would argue with my nomination for 2005 of Steve Gawley who takes the Club’s highest honour again for the second successive year.

I wrote last year that it is almost impossible for one man to fall in love with a footy club as quickly as Steve has. He not only has the passion for the Club but has the drive of several men combined when it comes to making sure that we have everything we need to operate on and off the field.

It is inappropriate to elaborate upon Steve’s own financial contribution, but suffice to say it is considerable. At all clubs, no matter their sport of origin, there are essentially two types of supporter. One who can contribute financially, but has zero time to offer for Board membership or day to day operational issues. The other is the direct opposite. This person has plenty of time to offer, but lacks the financial wherewithal to boost the Club coffers.

And then there is Steve Gawley because he does both and in big chunks of each.

Lightning strikes more than twice with Steve. It keeps on hitting because the Companies he attracts as sponsors to our Club year after year continue to stay, which is testimony not only to his ability but I should also add is reflective of the marvellous environment we all create to make everybody welcome.

Steve loves the Eagles and everything they stand for. He is so happy that there is a Sydney variety where he can indulge his obsession with the brand. Even to the extent of appearing on Perth and Melbourne television exposing his treasure trove of Eagle memorabilia prior to the Grand Final …..

Congratulations Steve and thanks for being on our side ……

One often wonders how we get through each season as we do. It is of course due to the many supporters we are lucky enough to have. As always there are more jobs than people and season 2005 was no different, although at East Coast we have a wonderful core of individuals who will always put up their hand to take on a task.

This year we put a major emphasis on player welfare and rehabilitation. In 2005, there was one person who took on the total role of assessment, analysis and treatment of our players but naturally with the added support of his medical team. Matt Stewart was always there when required and although he received a small honorarium for his work as a professional physiotherapist, nothing was too much trouble for Matt as he undertook the tasks of appraisal and treatment of injured players. His knowledge, experience and manner as he went about his responsibilities on match days and during the week, meant that players were very comfortable in dealing with him and taking his advice on long and short term injuries.

We congratulate and thank Matty for his invaluable contribution to the East Coast Eagles this season.

This award was introduced to cater for the growth in the Club and to acknowledge people who do so much behind the scenes. We have many such volunteers who we trust are recognised in the various team and committee reports.

However it is important to recognise very special and largely unheralded work from certain individuals. In 2005 we are delighted to acknowledge Trevor Hangan. Trev’s involvement and enthusiasm has never dampened and he can always be relied upon to be there when needed. He has contributed to the Baulkham Hills and East Coast Eagles’ clubs for many years in a variety of ways as a player and coach and in particular through his development work with the juniors.

Trevor always has a story ready of his own days of playing footy, which to some appear as just a figment of his imagination. That is until someone else backs up the truth of the story!!

Thanks for your contribution Trevor to the East Coast Eagles footy club ….

The leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played or how often. A couple of years ago we changed that to recognise First Grade senior goals only.

In 2005 the Banjo Books leading Goalkicker award is jointly shared by Mark Petersen (left) and Nick Trask who slotted through 33 goals each for the season.

Mark joined the Club from Balmain where he had played the two previous years and he was a strong and welcome inclusion to the Eagles’ ranks. Nick also won in 2004 but was cut down in Round 15 of this year with a season ending knee injury which prevented him from kicking a higher tally.

In 2005 we had many First Grade goalkickers (30 out 39 players who played First Grade) and in fact had the 3rd (Petersen), 4th (Trask) and 5th (Gus Seebeck with 25) highest in the Sydney AFL.

This award had always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution.

Jon Vlatko joined East Coast for season 2005 from the SANFL Club Glenelg where he had played all his senior football. Jon saw the opportunity to further his business career in Sydney and following his friendship with some existing Eagles, he made East Coast his football home.

Not only has Jon won the Eagles’ Footballer of the Year award, he took out the Club Champion Trophy as the Best & Fairest player based on the Match Committee’s votes throughout the season. To top it all off he received the accolades of his peers when he also won the highly sought after Players’ Player trophy based on the weekly votes of his fellow players.

Rewarded with Sydney representative honours he played in two successful matches against Riverina and Queensland and is now very much a player who is often the first tagged by the opposition when it comes to trying to shut down the Eagles attacking moves.

“Vlats” has been a revelation for the Club this year with his enthusiasm for the game and the passion he shows for his team mates and the Eagle brand. He consistently led the on field statistics for possessions gathered and off the field was always the first one to arrive at team functions and get togethers whether official ones or not.

We congratulate Jon Vlatko on a wonderful season.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER

Graeme Merkel

The 2005 football year commenced with preseason training at the picturesque Bedlam Bay Reserve on the shore of Sydney Harbour under the direction of Assistant Coach Nick Trask. Whilst players were preparing themselves for the year ahead, the Executive was carrying out the difficult task of selecting a suitable Senior Coach to take the Club forward.

General Manager, Dave Ralston was appointed in November, 2004 to attend to the day to day running of the Club. Dave’s enthusiasm for football and football related matters has certainly eased the burden on the Club’s Executive and he is to be thanked for his efforts throughout the year.

Rohan Graham, the Under 18 and assistant senior coach of the Strathmore Football Club in the Essendon District League was finally appointed as the Senior Coach and commenced his duties with the Club in January. He bought with him an extensive knowledge of football, many football contacts and a determination to be a successful coach after his own playing career was cut short by injury.

In March after the cricket season was completed, we were able to return to our regular training ground at ELS Hall Reserve, this year under much improved lighting conditions following contributions by the Club and Ryde Municipal Council. Unfortunately, again we were nomads as far as a ‘home’ ground was concerned. This year with Roger Sheeran Oval being unavailable, we were able to gain the use of Alan Davidson Oval at Alexandria for our matches. Whilst this venue was well away from our traditional area, its surface and facilities were excellent.

Recruiting was active throughout the off season and we were able to secure the services of talented players in Jon Vlatko, Craig Robinson, Luke Kenna, Blair Oliver, Kieran McRedmond and Mark Petersen. Josh Ryder, Rohan Ritchie and Steve Merkel also rejoined the playing list after spending 2004 travelling overseas. Midway through the season we were also fortunate to obtain the services of Glenn Garner, Jason Coulloupas and Troy Parker from the St George Football Club.

With so many new players, and himself new to Sydney football, it was always going to be difficult for Rohan to mould the players into a cohesive team, playing the harder style of football he wanted. However, other than a few hiccups along the way the First Grade team performed creditably throughout the season and certainly started to gain some respect from opposition teams. Something we have sadly lacked in recent years.

In round 17 we played North Shore on their home ground where the winner of the match would advance to the finals and the loser would miss out. Unfortunately we went into that game without six of our top ten players. History now shows that North Shore won that game and went on to win the 2005 Premiership. East Coast failed to play finals football once again.

The Reserve Grade team under the coaching of Scott Abercrombie and his able assistants, Phil Bester and Andrew Moylan, played in the Grand Final and they are to be congratulated for that. However, the most pleasing part of their coaching this year was their preparation of players to step up into First Grade. In a number of instances though the year, when players were omitted from 1st Grade, they went back and played a few games in the Reserves and then came back better and more confident players. For this Scott and his team are thanked for their excellent results

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. The Under 18 team under Ian Gordon found the competition in that grade to be substantial. While it is always testing to take junior players and make them into senior players, the selection of a number of Under 18 players in both First and Reserve grade teams, where they performed with credit, shows that the Club has a talented pool of players coming through. The team itself, after a disappointing beginning, performed well in the latter part of the season but unfortunately did not reach the finals. Ian and his assistants are thanked for their commitment and dedication in sometimes, difficult circumstances throughout the season.

I would also like to thank team managers, Alan Brotherston, Greg Krieger and Ross Abercrombie for their great work in attending to team administrative matters during the season. Unfortunately Greg returned to Brisbane part way through the season and his enthusiasm in attending to many mundane tasks in assisting the senior teams, particularly at training, was greatly missed.

A really special vote of thanks goes to Club stalwart, Alan Brotherston. Not only did he manage the First Grade team with aplomb, but was also a great support to me in attending to many Club matters.

The Senior Team Runners, Tim Bylsma and Jason Crawford along with Physiotherapist extraordinaire Matt Stewart, trainer Rudi Bylsma and their assistants, Keryn Milford, Simon West, Peta Pietracci and Holly West are second to none in their various roles. They are to be commended and thanked for their efforts and dedication throughout the year.

Finally, I thank my fellow Board members for their support, guidance and passion during the year and look forward to working with them again in 2006

We move into 2006 once again under the guidance of Senior Coach Rohan Graham, who I am sure has greatly benefited from his first year as a Senior Coach. “Fixer” has a skilled playing list and a number of initiatives in place to ensure that our Club is in the best possible position to accomplish success.

Please join with me in leaving no stone unturned in achieving this.

Football reports are always enjoyable tasks for the very reason that win, lose or draw there are always so many positives to write about. It certainly helps if you win a Premiership but this great game of ours is such that it’s just fantastic being a part of it, training hard, forming friendships, the camaraderie and of course the battles on the field.

No question about it … the 18’s this year in my eyes were expected to perform a lot better than they did, but that’s not to say they didn’t give it their all because they certainly did. However I think we have to give credit where it’s due and it certainly is a tough competition at this Premier League level and that is not a bad thing. Whilst the competition is getting stronger and stronger, the game of AFL is getting healthier and healthier. With the Swans winning the AFL flag this year for the first time and the way the city of Sydney has embraced that win, we may see a further strengthening of the code and that can only be good also.

Now back to the 18’s. Sure the competition is strong but that just means we have to take that next step and be strong too. We were competitive in nearly all our matches bar one and had some narrow losses to several of the top teams. Of course the exception was Riverview who have set the bar even higher this year by firstly caning the Eagles and then ‘streeting’ the Redbacks (two pts at half time) in the Grand Final to set a new benchmark in standards we all have to aspire to.

The apologists and optimists will no doubt point to our long list of medium to long term injuries and ever present player unavailability as a factor in our results this year, but all teams go through their ups and downs. That’s something that is part and parcel of the game and can be managed. Mixed in with the lows there were plenty of highs. Our win over North Shore at Henson Park was probably one of our best and of course to knock Balmain out of the finals in our last round at Alan Davidson and complete three in a row was a nice way to finish a season off. Phil Entwisle's emergence as a senior player with the

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Eagles was a highlight as was James Ford’s continuing development and of course we all cheered when he ran out onto the ground with the Swans Reserves and picked up several touches.

Brad Whale appears to be a very good First Grader in the making as does Michael Murrell who was outstanding for us all year. Brad and Michael, our Best & Fairest and Runner Up respectively are very worthy recipients of their trophies as both had stellar seasons. Apart from their obvious ability as footballers, they provided direction and leadership for their team mates, a vital asset which earnt them the respect of the entire playing group.

Travis Thripp and Tim Entwisle are two outstanding players who struggled with major injuries this year and given a clean bill of health could be something else next year. Brad Andrews came to us from South Australia this year as a 16yr old and showed tremendous potential before succumbing to a serious injury and adding his name to the long list on the sideline. Grant Tinker (Pilkington Award winner) and Jayden Pendleton are another two who spring to mind when you think of players with tremendous potential. Shaun Costello (last year’s 16’s Association Best and Fairest and this year’s Most Consistent) had another good year and should take the extra step up in 2006 and be a valuable player with the Eagles.

Chris Moore (Coach’s Award) was the penultimate team man this year urging the side on whenever he could and putting in some cracker performances on the field himself as well. In fact as I sit here looking at the list there are so many good young players who could quite easily go on to bigger and better things and when you realise 21 of them are eligible for 18’s again next year it augers very well for the future of the East Coast Eagles club.

Congratulations to all those players receiving awards as they are a result of your dedication and hard work and are much deserved. In my eyes we should reward excellence but from my coaching point of view I would give you all a trophy for allowing me to be a part of your lives for a short period of time and for giving me the effort and dedication it takes to perform in this very demanding sport of AFL.

My thanks go to the Club for the opportunity of helping to develop these young players and of course there’s a long list of helpers who we need to thank for their efforts during the year. Paul Thripp and Greg Murrell my assistant coaches. Paul also backed up as team manager and coordinated most of the managerial duties. Rick Laird our game day runner and also warm ups man on training nights and game day. Rob Mannion for game day paperwork. who looked after our kit and water bottles making sure the jumpers were laundered each week. Paul Hargraves our trusty goal umpire and sometimes boundary umpire. Lots of people who were fantastic throughout the year and of course the person who the entire team would like to thank is Mike Pilkington our ‘number one ticket holder’ whose “Pilko Awards” were greatly anticipated and much appreciated each week.

Won’t be long and it will be Xmas and all of a sudden it’s footy again. One year bigger, one year older, one year stronger, and one year more experienced. Come back more determined then ever and let’s see if we can’t set some bars of our own.

As the final siren sounded on the Reserves Grand Final and the score board unfortunately did not read in our favour, it was a very disappointing moment. At that instant it felt as if the 2005 season had been a failure as we had not been able to secure the Premiership that we had worked so hard to achieve. You could see the disappointment in the faces of the players and the supporters to have come so close, only to fall short of the goal. The feeling was one that I am not in a hurry to experience again.

Now a few weeks on and looking back on the season without the emotion of Grand Final day blurring my vision, I can see that the season was not a failure. It was in fact far from it and that empty feeling of defeat, although not desirable, should be one of the main motivating factors heading into season 2006. The thing about this year’s team, as opposed to the side that won the 2002 Premiership, is that I believe this team will only get better if we maintain the core of players, where as the 2002 group was playing as close to its best as it could.

In reviewing the season I looked at the job description that was given to me at the start of the year by the Club. Specifically at the key points as they related to what was expected from me as a coach and therefore the performance of the team. As is the case with almost every football club in Australia, the main focus was the performance of the First Grade team. However, in order to have a successful First Grade team the Club believed it was necessary to have a competitive Reserve Grade team. The Reserves would supply players ready to step into the top grade as required, as well as providing a stepping stone for younger players to progress from the Under 18’s. This was to be how East Coast would measure the success of the Reserves season at the end of the day, not by whether it had won a Premiership or not.

Using these criteria I think we can say that the season was very successful as we saw a number of players’ progress from Reserves at the beginning of the year and finish the season playing First Grade. We also saw a number of players given an opportunity to play senior footy out of the Under 18’s with

______33 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Phil Entwisle and Brad Whale being able to take it one step further and play in the First Grade team. The form and performances of the Reserve Grade players meant that there was a lot of pressure on for spots in both Firsts and Reserves all season and no player was guaranteed his spot on any given weekend. The fact that the Reserves were using the same systems of play and game plans, only slightly modified due to personnel, meant that any players who may have been struggling for form in the Firsts, or coming back from injury, found it very easy to regain confidence and push for re-selection in the Ones more quickly.

Having gone through this exercise I could see that the Club should view this season as having been pretty close to exactly what they had asked of their Reserve Grade team. Then it was time to go back over the season as a coach and ensure that I could look back and see it as successful. Having achieved what the Club had asked was a step in the right direction but I also had a responsibility to not only myself but also the players that turned out each week.

During pre-season we had the unusual situation of looking like having an extremely high number of players wanting to play with the East Coast Eagles. This was brought about due to some excellent off season recruiting by the Club, being able to maintain most of the list from the previous season, good numbers coming up from the 2004 Under 18’s and the return of some players who had not played for a while. Unfortunately it meant that there was the distinct possibility that during the season, if we were to try and give everyone a game, there would have been somewhere in the vicinity of 15 players missing out each week even before we took into account any of this year’s Under 18’s who may warrant selection.

It was decided by the match committee that this would be unmanageable and in order to be fair to everyone concerned we would, for the first time ever at this Club, have to trim the list and inform some players that we could not promise them a game. This was a tough decision at the time but in looking back it was the only way to ensure that we could meet the goals as outlined. This, aside from leaving players out of Grand final teams, was one of the toughest decisions I have had to make in my time coaching at the Eagles.

Although it was a hard call it did allow us to be able to give all the players that remained on the list the opportunity to play and improve as the season progressed as well as the flexibility to give some Under 18’s the experience and opportunity of playing open age football. This should hold the Club in good stead for both the near and distant future. If we can again maintain the majority of the list and recruit the right type of players for next year, then we should see more improvement as a Club and therefore in Reserve Grade as well.

This resulted in the playing group being able to improve themselves both as individuals and as a team. The camaraderie amongst the group was probably the best I have been involved with, illustrated by the numbers of Reserve Grade players that would stick around and watch the First Grade play. These two things combined with their on field performance and the overall results of the team lead me to believe that it was a successful season. However it is now important to do what we can to maintain the bulk of the group in order to continue the improvements next year.

In a season where you play in a Grand Final it is difficult to find individual award winners as in order to make the Grand Final you need to have a number of players performing at a high level consistently. This is especially the case with the core of this Reserve Grade group who achieved their success this year by being willing to work as hard as was required in order to make the player next to them the best player in the team. I think this is indicated in the closeness in the voting over the season and the fact that there was a tie for the “Billy McLeod Medal”. For this reason it was a joy to be involved with this group of players who turned up to each and every training session and the game and enjoyed doing the work with and for each other. This is a selfless group of players who should be proud of what they achieved this year because I am certainly proud of them.

To Rod Frost and Luke McLeod congratulations on being named the joint winners of this year’s “Billy McLeod Medal”. It is fitting that you should win it together as it would be hard to find two players who

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. over the years have given more of themselves on the field each week for this Club. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach both of you over the years as I know that every week I will get nothing less than 100% of what you have to offer and sometimes a little bit more. This is how they both have played their football over a number of years with the Club, not only this season just gone. They are both worthy winners of this award.

The Coaches award this year goes to Rowan Barnes. In his first year at the Club he fitted straight in. Rowan is a player not blessed with an abundance of natural ability but what he does do is get the absolute most out of the ability he does have. He leaves no stone unturned in his preparation and is always asking for ways in which he can improve himself. He benefited greatly from his time in First Grade and was playing his best footy at the business end of the season where he was an excellent contributor to our finals campaign.

The other Award this year is the Best Team Man and it goes to Dean Eggleton. Dean is only in his second full season of Football and once again showed that he will be a very good player for this Club for many years to come. Dean is a natural athlete with outstanding aerobic capacity but the most pleasing thing about Dean as a footballer is his incredible work ethic and eagerness to learn. He displays a knowledge of the game that others who have played 10 years of footy have yet to learn. Although he has only played for the two years Dean is always trying to push his team mates to improve and get the most out of themselves. He is more than happy to turn up to training early or stick around after to help a mate with fitness, skills or goal kicking.

Finally I would like to thank all the people who have helped make this year possible. I have a track record of forgetting people so in order to avoid this I would first like to thank everyone for their help this year. If I miss naming you I apologise and assure you it is not because your role was not appreciated.

To my Assistant Coaches Phillip Bester and Andrew Moylan thanks for your help all season, I hope that both of you are as excited about next year as I am after this year’s result.

Greg Krieger and Ross Abercrombie thanks for ensuring that all the paper work was looked after and all I had to worry about was coaching the team each week.

To all the Runners throughout the season thank you and I promise if you put your hand up next year there won’t be as many messages. Maybe …

To the Club for giving me the opportunity to coach again and be involved with this great group of guys and to the supporters that come down each week, Thanks.

To the first grade Coaches and the Football department, especially Rohan Graham and Graeme Merkel, thanks for your support throughout the season and I look forward to working with you again next year.

And to the families, wives and girlfriends of the players and most importantly my wife Nicole for allowing us to indulge ourselves each year, I send the biggest thank you that comes with a “please let us do it all again next year” note, because we have some unfinished business to attend to.

Scott Abercrombie

This year for me entailed one of the most challenging experiences I have ever undertaken in my life. The journey could best be described as a roller coaster. The highs were rewarding and gave me a sensational feeling. The lows conversely were disappointing and left a real bad feeling in the core of my stomach. This is the job I signed on for and although at times you wonder whether it’s all worth the stress, as my fading hair line demonstrated as the season wore on, you wouldn’t want it any other way. Being a coach is like being a player. At times people will question your ability to perform, but it’s just a matter of persevering, working on your weaknesses, backing your strengths and controlling the stuff you can control. Regardless of how hard you try, you very rarely win over everyone.

My beginning at the club didn’t start until after the Christmas break. I must admit that when I first came down and saw the sight of Zoo Williams wearing a checkerboard beard, I did wonder what I had got myself in to. Down south the only footage we see of Sydney is the Mardi gras, and my first impression was that the TV as usual had it pretty much right. As we got further into the pre-season I began to meet and learn more about the people involved with this Club and I am much the better for it. The East Coast Eagles are a well-run, dynamic, innovative, financially secure club which contains some great people. The only missing ingredient in the past has been success. Unfortunately for our followers, this year we again failed to deliver.

The Club recruited well in 2005 and secured some quality recruits and more importantly quality people. Jon Vlatko and Craig Robinson came over from Glenelg, Luke Kenna joined us from Terang, Blair Oliver joined us from the powerful Wangaratta Rovers club and Kieren McRedmond came from the equally well-regarded Ainslie in the Canberra competition. Rowan Barnes moseyed on over from the west and Zane Nawrocki headed north from Lara. Added to this we got Ro Ritchie and Josh Ryder back from overseas. We were happy with our recruiting, although every other club is happy with their recruiting at that time of the year and it was hard to gauge where we stood in the grand scheme of things.

______38 2005 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. After several good results in the pre-season we were optimistic about the season ahead. Two good wins against mediocre opposition in Balmain and Campbelltown gave us a high confidence level but we probably got a little ahead of ourselves and subsequently lost a game we should have won against Wollongong. This was a really disappointing loss and as I said to the players after the game you don’t realise how important these games are until the last few rounds when sides scurry for finals spots. Unfortunately this proved to be correct later in the season.

We survived a last half surge from St George in an away game and were travelling steadily at 3-1. We really had a chance to measure ourselves against the two best sides in two weeks, Pennant Hills and Wests with both games held under lights at Henson Park. These two weeks were the most disappointing for the season for me personally and I would think the players. We got belted physically, verbally and failed to show any resolve under the extreme pressure both these sides put us under. The loss against Wests was the most upsetting for me in my time in football.

This left us with one of two ways to go. We could either wither up and cry in our beers or we could come out fighting and take ‘em on. Fortunately for us we came out firing the next week and beat North Shore at home. This was followed by a narrow loss against Uni after a spirited last quarter come back.

The second half of the draw saw us beat all the same sides as we had in the first half of the draw as well as picking up a game against Wollongong which we had dropped down there. This left us needing to win two out of our final three games after losing to Pennant Hills in a nail biter. The sight of them singing the song on the ground after their victory still burns within me and I would hope the players remember this the next time we play them. Unfortunately as was the case all year, we failed to beat the better sides in the competition when it mattered most. Although we played some good football in the closing weeks we still couldn’t manage the four points. Losses to North Shore (eventual Premiers) and Wests signalled the end of the year. We did manage to beat East’s in the final round and although it was good to finish on a high we all knew we would rather be playing the next week.

The year saw some real positives from the Football Club’s point of view with the emergence of Ben Rogers and Brad Ure (Rising Star Award) from the underage competition, as well as current under eighteen players Phil Entwisle and Brad Whale. We realise we have some outstanding talent in our ranks and we really hope to develop these players into future champions of the club. Jon Vlatko and Craig Robinson (when fit) were excellent pick-ups for our Club both on and off the field and were excellent role models for other players. Jon was duly awarded the Club Champion Medal and was a deserved winner of this award. Blake Ure established himself as the League’s premier fullback and very rarely, if ever got beaten. Darren Chapman started to become the player we knew he could, mostly through hard work and getting the best out of himself and fittingly won the Coach’s Award. Ro Ritchie barely missed a beat as the season wore on, regularly racking up a very high number of possessions. His effort of jointly winning the Runner Up trophy with “Fitto” was a just reward for the season. Ryan had a great year and should be aiming to go one better next year. Luke Kenna, built like he could ride a bottom weight in a Melbourne Cup, impressed us with his courage and football nous.

The football department and the players realise we have a lot of hard work to get where we want to. We will have a big pre-season and work harder than ever before to achieve our true potential.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people involved in this journey. To Peter Physick and the board, thankyou. You have made my job so much better. You let me get on with the job of coaching and although at times you have probably wondered what’s going on, you have given your full support. To Graeme Merkel, as Football Operations Manager, your work for this Football Club has been phenomenal. You have done everything in your power to make my job easier. Although we had a few tough times during the year we stuck at it and persevered. I thank you.

Thankyou also to Viv for providing rolls for the players after the game, they were greatly appreciated. To Trevor Hangan and Chris Ford for your help with the football side of things, thankyou. To Scott Abercrombie I say a huge thankyou. When I came up you helped me in so many ways and went out of your way to make things easier for me. You are a true servant of the club and this place would be a lot

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. poorer if you were not involved, although “Black” thinks Digital is a lot poorer for your involvement with the Club.

Thanks also to Black (Craig Abercrombie) for his contribution to the Footy Club. I don’t think we realise how good it is to have Digital on board because they just do a fantastic job. To my team manager Al Brotherston, you are a credit to the Club and a real hidden gem. You make my job on match day a lot easier. The thing I like about Al is he just does his job; he doesn’t want any recognition for it, a sign of a good clubman. To our medical staff headed by Matty Stewart, probably the best crew in NSW let alone Sydney. I appreciate all your work

Thankyou also to my runners ‘Crawf’ and Tim “I’ll get dressed as the boys run onto to the field” Bylsma. I also would like to say thanks to Ian Rogers and Bob Harvey for doing the stats every week. Sometimes I want to throw them out the window but they are very much appreciated. Thanks as well to the players who did the scoreboard and had to put up with my yelling and swearing in the box. Also thank you to ‘Gordo’ and ‘Trippy’ for your work with the Under 18’s.

I thank you all for your support and hope 2006 will be The Year of the Eagle!

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER MILESTONES REACHED DURING 2005

The Match Statistics sections for each grade are included within the overall team reports elsewhere in the Year Book. Those statistics are now ranked according to total number of Sydney AFL First Grade games played for East Coast Eagles and any Sydney AFL First Grade games played for Baulkham Hills Falcons prior to and including 1999.

However it is important to also maintain a register of the number of games played for the “Club”. The definition of the “Club” for this purpose is all matches played with East Coast Eagles and Baulkham Hills in any grade or age group. These individual statistics are shown against each player’s name in the respective Match Statistics for each grade.

Congratulations to the following players who reached personal milestones during season 2005.
