AND KETTLEBURGH PARISH NEWS NOVEMBER 2017

Vacancy in the Parishes

A strange idea! The parishes are not vacant at all. There are people worshipping in them and trying to share the Gospel – just as ever over hundreds of years. However, at the moment there is not a Rector or Vicar present and the process for the appointment is not a straight forward one.

As you may know the seven parishes of the ‘Orebeck’ benefice as it is now called have found it difficult to meet the full costs of the Parish Share which pays for the costs of a Rector and their housing, diocesan support costs and the shared training costs for all ministers. If you like – paying the basic bills of having a Vicar or Rector. Unfortunately, this was happening so much that the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and was running at a substantial loss and was selling clergy housing to keep the budget balanced. The Bishop now challenges the parishes in such a situation to draw up an Action Plan sharing how, through the Mission and their giving, they can work towards the full total. In response, the Diocese budgets for a lower but increasing figure to help cover the period until the full amount is paid.

The Seven Church Councils are now working towards such an Action Plan in the first part of the Autumn and will receive help to do so from Canon Graham Hedger the Diocesan Stewardship Officer. This process is a challenge to look at the spiritual mission and financial opportunities in the parish and encourage others to do so too. It should be seen as a partnership of the seven churches in responding to a God who is so generous to us in creation, in Jesus and in the call and the gifts of the Spirit.

At a recent meeting of the 7 Church Councils they decided together that the Action Plan should work towards appointing a new full time Priest to lead God’s people and care for all those who live in the parish.

We hope the Action Planning Process can be completed in the autumn. So work begins by drawing up the Orebeck Benefice Profile which will describe the villages, their community and shared life in the hope that a new Priest can be sought and appointed in the New Year.

I write this as Rural Dean who shares with the Churchwardens and the Elders some responsibility for this period. I hope this explanation helps and, with all of you, hope we can quickly move forward to the appointment of your new parish priest.

With best wishes, Mark Sanders,

Rural Dean and Rector of with .

Report: Kettleburgh September 9th Sponsored Bike Ride and Walk

The wind was chilly at first and I wished I’d had my gloves and ear muffs. I picked up my first conker in Rectory Road and saw squirrels by Dial Farm and alpacas at Denham. I got caught in the rain at Oakley and couldn’t find anywhere to shelter. Although I had a waterproof jacket my trousers were dripping. I finally found the churches on the Brome Road and these were the only two churches I hadn’t been to before. There was a wedding at Hoxne and another at Eye. I saw the bride and groom in an open topped vintage car. After that, the sun came out and made it quite hot, but I got caught in the rain again on the way home. I did about 30 miles, but only 18 churches as they were so far apart. What a lovely excuse for a long ride in the country-side! Thank you to Rowena who ran between churches and to all sitters in our church porch and outside when we had a wedding and a big thank you especially to all sponsors.

KETTLEBURGH HARVEST FESTIVAL REPORT St. Andrew’s Church was beautifully decorated for the Harvest Festival on Sunday 8th October and our thanks go to Jackie Clark for a very interesting and entertaining service, which also included a new hymn sung to the tune of ‘Chariots of Fire’. The theme continued into our harvest supper, with a challenge to make as many words as possible from the letters HARVEST; I think the highest in the room was 69 words. We enjoyed a delicious (and very filling) supper of soup, jacket potatoes with salads and beans, and apple crumble. Thank you very much to everyone who helped with the church, the service and the supper.

Kettleburgh Green Trust Article for parish magazine

Working party required for village green tidy up.

The pond area and bed by the Church Road entrance are in need of a tidy up this winter. Are you able to lend a hand and join a working party? Some digging, cutting clearing will be involved but there’s a great sense of satisfaction when the work is done. Once the bed has been dug over, we plan to plant some scrubs and low maintenance plants to bring some colour. Hopefully the Beavers will once again add some annuals. Do you have some suitable perennial plants we could use? Suggested plants are lavender, cat mint or hebes. Contact Caroline Wheeler-Rowe, Hannah Barton or Heidi Finbow, email kgtchair@wheeler- rowe.com or send a Facebook message.

For your Information -An Article about Deben Health Group

What is a Care Navigator?

Deben Health Group (DHG) has been supported through the NHS “Releasing Time for Care Programme”. This has helped colleagues from other practices to explore different ways of working that will improve how practices provide services, both directly to patients and “behind the scenes “.

Deben Health group has agreed that one of the most important areas to review is how patients are “signposted “as efficiently as possible, to the right person in the practice, or in some cases to another medical professional outside of the practice. This has involved ALL receptionists being trained as Care Navigators to be able to have the right conversations with you, so that they can book you in with the best person to help you. It will also mean that GP practices have more information about services outside of the surgery which will be able to help some patients with specific needs, perhaps better than people at the surgery can.

Care Navigation provides patients with a first point of contact which directs them to the most appropriate source of help. Receptionists acting as care navigators ensure our patients are booked with the right person the first time.

Reception staff are trained and have access to a directory of information about services, in order to help them direct patients to the most appropriate source of help or advice. This may include services in the community as well as within the practice. DHG are currently using Suffolk InfoLink www.Suffolk.gov.uk/infolink as our local directory for patients.

Benefits for practices: This innovation frees up Health Care Team time, releasing about 5 per cent of demand for clinical consultations in most practices. It makes more appropriate use of each team member’s skills and increases job satisfaction for receptionists.

Benefits for patients:

• It is easier for patients to get an appointment with the GP when they need it, and shortens the wait to get the right help. Seen by the right person, thereby getting treated quicker

• Improved understanding of their condition

• Increased awareness of available services

• Encourages positive behavior change and self-care

• Assists with the reduction of anxiety

• Helps to improve the overall experience of health care

HISTORY CORNER Stumpy Brown

Stumpy ( his real name was Richard Brown) lived on the outskirts of Woodbridge. Stumpy and his wife were in charge of the Woodbridge pest house, normally situated on the outskirts of town- a rather unsavoury job. After a dubious career as a labourer and poacher, he was shunned as being dangerous although no crime had been pinned on him.

Between 1800 and 1810, three local murders had occurred.

1) An officer stationed at Woodbridge barracks was found with his throat cut and his pockets rifled near the Martlesham Red Lion Inn.

2) The captain of a Norwegian brig was found dead and sewn into a sack at the bottom of Kysom dock.

3) A farmer named Aighton, from , was found dead in a barn, from being beaten about the head.

Nearly thirty years later in 1838, when Stumpy was some sixty years of age, a man named Green, informed the authorities of Stumpy's involvement in the murders, leading to his arrest and trial at . He was found guilty and sent to Botany Bay by one of the last prison transport ships to set sail from there. Unfortunately, it sank with all on board, off the coast of France.

His wife later made a deathbed confession where she admitted assisting her husband kill the officer and the sea captain by drugging them. A man named Fitch had been admitted to the pest house suffering from small pox. Stumpy told his wife that Fitch knew what he had done and she persuaded Mr Brown to suffocate him while he was weak, using a pillow. Stumpy told his wife he had killed the Hasketon farmer because he had prosecuted him.

So, justice was finally done. This case demonstrates the difficulty for the community securing a prosecution without witnesses coming forward and cases such as these highlighted the need for a professional police force. No doubt, Stumpy's neighbours were aware of what he could do, but were terrified to inform on him.

After the Police Act, the local constable would know his villains and would have made their life difficult.

Alas, we have come nearly full circle. Peter Driver
