KIVUNIM Comes to Morocco March 15-28, 2018 (arriving from Spain and Portugal) PT 1 Charles Landelle-“Juive de Tanger” Unlike our astronauts who travel to "outer space," going to Morocco is a journey into "inner space." For Morocco reveals under every tree and shrub a spiritual reality that is unlike anything we have experienced before, particularly as Jewish travelers. We enter an Islamic world that we have been conditioned to expect as hostile. Instead we find a warmth and welcome that both captivates and inspires. We immediately feel at home and respected as we enter a unique multi-cultural society whose own 2011 constitution states: "Its unity...is built on the convergence of its Arab-Islamic, Amazigh and Saharan-Hassani components, is nurtured and enriched by African, Andalusian, Hebraic and Mediterranean constituents." A journey with KIVUNIM through Morocco is to glimpse the possibilities of the future, of a different future. At our alumni conference in December, 2015, King Mohammed VI of Morocco honored us with the following historic and challenge-containing words: “…these (KIVUNIM) students, who are members of the American Jewish community, will be different people in their community tomorrow. Not just different, but also valuable, because they have made the effort to see the world in a different light, to better understand our intertwined and unified traditions, paving the way for a different future, for a new, shared destiny full of the promises of history, which, as they have realized in Morocco, is far from being relegated to the past.” The following words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel remind us of the purpose of our travels this year. -

Contemporary Jewish Music and Culture Spring 2013 Judaic Studies Special Topics 563:225:01 Tuesday and Thursdays 6:10-7:30pm Dr. Mark Kligman ([email protected]) Office Hours Tuesday 5:00-6:00, Room 203 12 College Ave, Rm 107 Course Description This course will look at Contemporary Jewish Music. “Contemporary” for this class is defined as music created from the 1950s to the present. The thrust of this investigation will be Jewish music in America and Israel since the 1970s. In order to contextualize Jewish music in America the music prior to this period, the music of Jews with roots in Europe, will begin our discussion. Issues such as Jewish identity, authenticity, religion and culture will be ongoing in our discussion. One overarching topic is the ongoing nature of tradition and innovation. An ethnographic approach will inform the issues to see your culture plays a role in shaping, informing and intrinsically a part of music in Jewish life. Contemporary music in Israel will also be examined and will highlight some similarities to music in America as well as illustrate key differences. The course will be divided into three almost equal sections: contemporary Jewish music in America in Religious contexts (Orthodox, Conservative and Reform); klezmer music; and, Israeli music. The readings assigned for each course will provide a good deal of historical and contextual information as related to musicians and musical genres. At each class sessionsmusical examples (both audio and video) will demonstrate key musical selections. Historical, informational and cultural background of Jewish life will be part of the readings for each session. -

Posting February 2020 Rabbi, Romemu Brooklyn Full-time Position Romemu Brooklyn Background Romemu Brooklyn (RB), a partner shul of Romemu Manhattan (RM), seeks a soulful, musical, Jewish spiritual leader and community builder to bring our Brooklyn community to the next level. A powerhouse of teaching, music, voice, and chesed. Romemu, in Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi’s words, is "on the growing edge" of Judaism and spiritual practice. We are ecstatic and we are contemplative. We describe ourselves as neo-hasidic, deriving the joy of hasidut in full egalitarianism and inclusivity. Romemu Brooklyn began as a monthly Kabbalat Shabbat minyan in March 2017 and currently meets one Friday evening and one Shabbat morning each month for services from September through June, led by Romemu’s Hazzan/musical director, Basya Schechter, and driven by a strong core of committed volunteers. Over 400 unique individuals have come to services with us multiple times and many have expressed a desire to help Romemu Brooklyn evolve, expand, and reach our potential. We had our first High Holy Days together in 5779/2018 and built on that success in 5780/2019. There have been four RB B Mitzvah to date and four more students are preparing now for their B mitzvah in the first half of 2020. We have been gathering in the Park Slope and Prospect Heights neighborhoods in non-traditional venues as we search for a more permanent space for our growing community. In September 2019, we hired our first full-time team member, our Administrative & Community Coordinator, to take responsibility for soup-to-nuts operations, volunteer coordination, and the other time-consuming support necessary to maintain and grow our start-up kehillah. -
