FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the first play of our 2015-16 Season! We have been talking about doing Always…Patsy Cline since 2012 and are thrilled to finally be able to share it with our audiences. A tale of friendship between two women – one who sang of so much heartache and the other who became her number one fan. Patsy Cline died tragically in a plane crash with so many songs left unsung, but in this show we get to celebrate the many classic hits she left us. You are in for a treat. We’ll follow Always…Patsy Cline with an October 2 opening of Deathtrap by Ira Levin, the longest running thriller in Broadway history. I played Clifford a long time ago and have wonderful memories of scaring audiences silly and I can’t wait to do the same when I direct it here. Deathtrap brings us back to the days when SMP did thrillers regularly – if you like this one, I have another in my back pocket for next season! We’ll close out the year with A Christmas Memory based on the story by Truman Capote. This will be the Los Angeles premiere of this musical which Alison Eliel Kalmus will direct for us. If you liked A Little House Christmas last year, you’ll love this play. It is a beautiful, charming story about friendship and charity and the bonds that bring us home. I’m not quite ready to announce the rest of the season – it’s a bit like trying to build a house of cards! So much depends on balance and timing. Know that we have a beloved children’s story planned for our Field Trip Series, a beautiful American classic that I have long-wanted to direct will end the season, and an adult comedy-drama that hasn’t been done in a long time but deserves to be seen again (I will finally get back on stage in this one!) will begin the year. Our Mission is to celebrate the American Experience by producing plays that tell us something about being Americans. Our lobby displays and special programming take those ideas and carry them beyond our stage. I hope you are enjoying the exploration as much as we enjoy bringing them to you, our loyal patrons. Let me hear how you think we are doing. Reach me at [email protected] Christian Lebano

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to Always...Patsy Cline. As a director, what I do for a living is more than just creative expression and bringing a script to life. So much of what I do is about research, history lessons, and psychology – especially when the subject is biographical. I will admit that prior to working on this project, I had only known some of Patsy’s music, and that her popularity had sustained well past her tragically short life – but that was about the extent of my Patsy knowledge. Throughout my research I became more and more fascinated with, and inspired by her life and career. I knew that we had a great responsibility to tell this story thoughtfully and respectfully, and I now have far greater insight and deep adoration for this American icon. What is it about Patsy Cline that continues to keep people so enthralled by her? Her unique talent? Her music? Her personal life? Her tragic death? I’ll let you decide – if you haven’t already. There are still to this day, numerous fan clubs, Facebook pages, tributes, and honors being bestowed. While we were in rehearsal it was announced that in 2016, Patsy Cline will be the first ever country legend, and first woman to be revived onstage via hologram – a full concert experience. A whole new generation will get to see her perform. Amazing! Whatever the reason is that her legacy lives on, I for one am grateful. To get to know and experience Patsy posthumously has truly been a gift, and I hope you feel the same way after seeing our show. Many thanks to all who have contributed enormously to make this happen! Ted Swindley, Louise Seger, and the one and only Miss Patsy Cline, thank you for allowing us to tell your story. Thanks to Nathan, SMP, Christian, Estelle, Cast, Crew, Team, Band, Board, Staff, and Volunteers for all of your hard work and support. And special thanks to you, our audience, for being here – and for supporting live theatre!

Always…Robert Marra

And that’s all there is to it! Coming Next A Christmas Memory – A Musical Based on the book by Truman Capote Book by Duane Poole Music by Larry Grossman Lyrics by Carole Hall Directed by Alison Eliel Kalmus Music Directed by Emily Cohn November 27 to December 27

“[It] wraps the audience in a bright holiday mood, generating… goodwill and cheer. - If you're tired of yet another “Christmas Carol,” this one's an enjoyable change.” - Palo Alto Weekly

In rural Alabama, 1933, young Buddy is being raised by three older eccentric cousins. He is closest to his cousin Sook, still a child herself in many ways -- and as Christmas nears, she and Buddy gather ingredients to bake holiday gifts for those who've had a memorable impact on their lives in the past year. A Christmas Memory is the tale of a friendship for the ages. A joyous, emotional holiday musical that reminds us what Christmas, family, and friendship are all about. Deathtrap By Ira Levin Directed by Christian Lebano January 15 – February 20

"Two-thirds thriller and one-third a devilishly clever comedy…Suspend your disbelief and be delighted. Scream a little. It's good for you." - Cue Magazine

After four flops in a row, Sidney Bruhl, a playwright who was once Broadway’s brightest light is so desperate to come up with another hit, he says he would kill for one. Is he joking? Thrilling twists and razor-sharp wit combine in one of the funniest murder mysteries of all time. Deathtrap holds the record as the longest running thriller on Broadway.
