Wellington Remembers 1914–1918 142 22353 Private Thomas Henry Pye King’s Shropshire Light Infantry Born on 28 July 1892 in Marchamley, Shropshire Lived in Nordley, Astley Abbotts, Bridgnorth Died on 25 March 1916 aged 23 in Shropshire Buried at All Hallows Churchyard, Rowton, Shropshire His story Thomas Henry Pye was the only child of Thomas and Elizabeth (née Wellings) Pye, who had married at Stanton upon Hine Heath, near Shawbury, on 20 May 1888. He was born in Marchamley on 28 July 1892, and when Elizabeth registered his birth she gave Thomas’ occupation as a gamekeeper. In 1901 the family was living at Astley Abbotts near Bridgnorth where Thomas was still working as a gamekeeper. Thomas Henry seems to have been known as Henry, presumably to diff erentiate him from his father. His birthplace is given as Hodnet, a parish in North Shropshire that incorporates the village of Marchamley. Ten years later, when the 1911 census was taken, the family was in the same home, and still had the same neighbours. Thomas was working as a jobbing rabbit catcher and young Thomas Henry was employed as an assistant gardener. We know that Thomas Henry enlisted into 9th Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in Bridgnorth sometime after October 1915 and was issued with the service number 22353. It appears that he spent his army career training in the UK, as record of soldiers’ eff ects tells us that he had no overseas service. Thomas Henry died of pneumonia in the military hospital at Prees Heath on 25 March 1916 after less than six months in the army.

  • Shropshire's Churchyard Yews
’CHURCHYARD YEWS painted by Rev. Edward Williams M.A. more than two hundred years ago photographs by Tim Hills between 1997 and 2012 Between 1786 and 1791 Rev. Edward Williams made a record of most of ’parish churches. He was described in The Gentlem’ magazine vol 153 as “ excellent ” who had also “much of ” We are told in The annals and magazine of natural history, zoology and botany - vol 1 p183 that his studies included “ catalogue of all the plants which he had detected during many years' careful herborization of the county of ”for which “accuracy is well known, and perfect reli- ance can be placed on any plant which he ” Williams work thus gives us a rare opportunity to see some of Shropshir’churchyard yew trees as they appeared two hundred and twenty years ago. The examples below give us reason to be confident in the accuracy of his recording. The yew at Boningale (left) now has a girth of about 13ft, while that at Bucknell (centre) now has a girth of about 19ft, and the Norbury giant (right) has a girth above 33ft. His attention to detail is illustrated in this example at Tasley. In the painting we can clearly see that sections of the bole are leaning outwards, a process which has led to the distinctive yew we see today. On the following pages, 28 of the yews in ’paintings are seen as they appeared two hundred and twenty years ago and at they are now. We are grateful to Shropshire Archives for granting us permission to use their material in this way.

Lance Corporal Henry Pritchard Died 14th July 1916, aged 27 Henry Pritchard was born on the 9th January 1889 in Middleton, Chirbury, Shropshire. His parents Ellen Jones and William Pritchard, although they already had a daughter Louisa (two years old at the time) were not married. They did marry, however, on the 16th December 1890 and subsequently went on to have another nine children. The father, William was a baryte miner and worked at the Wotherton Baryte mine for over 20 years. The family lived in the Folley cottages in Wotherton during this time. The 1891 census, when Henry was only two years old, shows that living in the family house, was Herbert Pritchard, then 17, who was a lodger labouring in the same baryte mine. This is the same Herbert Pritchard whom our Henry later lodges with in the 1911 census Wotherton Barite Mine The 1911 census shows Henry, aged 22 and living in the house of his cousin Herbert who is now aged 38. The house is 167 Watling Street, Church Stretton. The household consists of Herbert and his wife Elizabeth Rose and their five children, Henry and two women boarders who are mother and daughter. All of the adults, except the wife, work at the Sanitary Laundry Company, a steam laundry located across the road on the site where now Continental Fireplaces stands. This area today is called Laundry Bank. The two men are laundry engineers; daughter Priscilla, 17, is the laundry bookkeeper, daughter Rosella, 15, is the laundry calendar hand and the boarders Annie Haley, 40, is a laundress washer and her daughter Florence Haley, 18, is a laundress ironer.
