Co confi rms US probe Allianz warns of risk MUNICH, Aug 3, (AP): The Allianz fi nancial services company is warning that lawsuits brought by U.S. investors against the company could end up having a material impact on its future fi nancial results. The major German company made the disclosure Sunday, noting that it received a request from the U.S. Department of Justice for documents and information related to the compa- ny’s Structured Alpha Funds business, which is at the center of the investor lawsuits. The Securities and Exchange Com- mission launched its own probe into the matter last year. In a statement, Munich-based Allianz SE said the Depart- ment of Justice’s request, plus “information available to Al- lianz as of today,” prompted the company’s management to conclude that there is “a relevant risk that the matters relating to the Structured Alpha Funds could materially impact future fi nancial results of Allianz Group.” The company noted that it can’t predict how much of a fi nancial impact it could be facing at this point, given the uncertain outcome of the Securities and Exchange Com- mission and Department of Justice investigations, and the litigation it faces. In an interim report last year, the company disclosed that it was facing federal lawsuits brought by investors in the U.S. over losses in the Structured Alpha Funds during the stock market’s sharp downturn in the spring of 2020 as the pan- demic battered the global economy and fi nancial markets. At the time, Allianz said the complaints were “legally and factually fl awed.” ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2021 BUSINESS 9 EPS CLOCKS 12.21 FILS; TOTAL ASSETS REACH KD 21.5BN KFH reports KD 102.2 mln net profit for H1 of 2021, an increase of 79.5% Financing receivables balance reaches KD 11.1bn, up 3.2%

Based in the northern Italian city of Maranello, Ferrari said net profi t for the three months ending June 30 compared with 9 million euros last year, when the company was forced to shut production for seven weeks. It was also an improvement over the 184-million-euro profi t posted in the same pe- riod of 2019, before the pandemic. Interim CEO John Elkann said June marked a re- cord in orders at the luxury carmaker, noting that general trends show the age of new Ferrari buyers is going down while the number of women placing orders doubled. “This speaks to the unique and enduring power of Ferrari,’’ Elkann told an analyst conference call. Shipments nearly doubled in the quarter to 2,685, along with net revenues, which surged to 1.03 bil- lion euros from 571 billion euros a year earlier. That was also an improvement of 5% over the same pe- riod in pre-pandemic 2019. Ferrari posted fi rst-half profi ts of 412 million eu- ros, up from 175 million euros in the same period last year. On the strength of the earnings, Ferrari raised its forecast to 450 million euros in cash by the end of the year, up from 350 million euros. Ferrari has announced a new CEO, Benedetto Vi- gna, an Italian executive, at Europe’s largest semi- conductor chipmaker, who will start his tenure Sept. 1. The company announced a capital markets day to outline strategy under the new CEO for June 16, 2022. Elkann said that electrifi cation of powertrains will be Ferrari’s focus for the next decade, noting that electrifi cation addresses tightening standards on emissions in the industry, “but does not solve the carbon footprint.’’ The challenge for the decade from 2030-2040, he said, will be focused on carbon neutrality, which “will mean changes in the energy supply and could lead to alternatives,” such as synthetic e-fuels or hy- drogen.

Warming rivers killing fi sh Earth’s longer days kick started oxygen growth

NEW YORK, Aug 3, (AP): Scientists have a new idea for how Earth got its oxygen: It’s because the planet slowed down and days got longer. A study published Monday proposes and puts to the test the theory that longer, continuous daylight kick-started weird bac- teria into producing lots of oxygen, making most of life as we know it possible. They dredged up gooey purple bacteria from a deep sink- hole in Lake Huron and tinkered with how much light it got in lab experiments. The more continuous light the smelly mi- crobes got, the more oxygen they produced. One of the great mysteries in science is just how Earth went from a planet with minimal oxygen to the breathable air we have now. Scientists long fi gured microbes called cyanobac- teria, were involved, but couldn’t tell what started the great oxygenation event. Researchers in a study in Monday’s Nature Geoscience theorize that Earth’s slowing rotation, which gradually lengthened days from six hours to the current 24 hours, was key for the cy- anobacteria in making the planet more breathable. About 2.4 billion years ago there was so little oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere that it could barely be measured, so no animal or plant life like we know could live. Instead, lots of microbes breathed Arbic in carbon dioxide, and in the case of cyanobacteria, produced oxygen in the earliest form of pho- tosynthesis. In this photo provided by the NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary a scuba diver observes the purple, white and green microbes covering rocks in Lake At fi rst it wasn’t much, but in only about 400 million years Huron’s Middle Island Sinkhole. Feel like days are just getting longer? They are and it’s a good thing because we wouldn’t have much to breathe if they weren’t, Earth’s atmosphere went to one-tenth the amount of oxygen according to a new explanation for how Earth’s oxygen rich atmosphere may have developed because of Earth’s rotation slowing. Scientists provided evidence for we have now — a huge jump, said the study’s lead author, this new hypothesis by lab testing gooey smelly purple bacteria from a deep sinkhole in Lake Huron. (AP) Judith Klatt, a biogeochemist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. That oxygen burst allowed plants and animals to evolve, with other plants now joining in the oxygen-making party, she said. Coronavirus But why did the bacteria go on the oxygen making binge? That’s where University of Michigan oceanographer Brian Arbic comes in. He studies tidal forces on Earth and how they’ve slowed Earth’s rotation. Arbic was listening to a col- league’s lecture about cyanobacteria and he noticed that the UK targets young with vaccine incentives oxygen event coincided with the timing of Earth’s days getting longer. The planet’s rotation slows because of the complicated physics of tidal friction and interaction with the moon. Bennett, Gaga reunite Monte on her solo album in ten years

NEW YORK, Aug 3, (AP): It took Marisa Monte 10 years to release a solo album, but the four-time Grammy winner never abandoned music. Far from being away, the Brazilian singer-song- writer remained extra busy over the last decade with projects including Tribalistas — her group with Ar- naldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown — as well as producing for other artists and touring, until the pan- demic hit. Last week she released “Portas,” a 16-songs ef- fort that follows 2011’s “O Que Você Quer Saber De Verdade” and includes the single “Calma,” which she co-wrote with Chico Brown. It opens with the song that gives the album its name and closes with the uplifting “Pra Mel- horar” featuring Seu Jorge and his teenage daughter, Flor de Maria. “Portas” — which means doors in Portuguese — seems like an appropriate title for the times. “In the beginning of 2020, Monte I was ready to start to record this new album and then eve- rything happened, the doors closed, we were locked at home,” Monte told The Associated Press in a re- cent interview from . The 53-year-old star, who has sold 15 million al- bums worldwide with a musical versatility that rang- es from pop to pop rock, samba, jazz and folk, also spoke about the way she works and about “Segue o Seco,” a song about the Brazilian droughts she sang at an outdoor concert in 2016, when it famously rained the moment she fi nished. Answers have been edited for brevity and clarity. AP: Many doors closed during the pandemic, but it seems like others opened. Is that why you named the South Korea’s Youngpyo Ko pitches against the United States during a baseball game at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Saturday, July 31, 2021, in Yokohama, Japan. There are doors that you can open to the outside, but there are also inside doors. And all the symbolic fi gures that surround the door were there in the song telling people: “Well, ‘I was there,’ ... still hold power people try to chose one door, but you can chose more than one. You can go in and out if you don’t like it. And it’s better to let them open to let them breath.” It’s a song that I did maybe four years ago, but it’s Crowdless Olympics: What gets lost? very current.
