He has published extensively in his academic field including books and edited volumes, articles in journals, and chapters in collections, and monographs. He has been invited to lecture and speak at more than 60 professional meetings and confer- ences throughout the United States and Canada.

Upham unwinds in his art studio where he paints contempo- rary paintings. His wife, Peggy, is an accomplished silversmith and designs jewelry. Both enjoy walking. The Uphams have two children. Erin is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh and is working in Pennsylvania now. Nathan is a junior at Occidental College in California, majoring in biology.

She was a member of the KU Track and Field team for four years. McField was an NCAA Qualifier in the 4x400m relay in June 2003.
