Try to remember that time in September When life was slow and oh, so mellow.

With this opening refrain, The Fantasticks invites us to return to a less complicated, more innocent time of life. Once we allow ourselves to remember, we can then follow the players as they tell the simple story of a boy, a girl, two parents, and a wall. It’s remarkable how many of us have a personal connection with The Fantasticks. Some participated in community theatre or school productions growing up. Others sang along to the original cast recording. Linda Dowdell, our musical director, recalls listening to her father play the score on the family piano after dinner, as well as listening to the LP over and over again.

Jan Hubert, a longtime SHOWTUNES supporter and former board member, is stage managing our production. On the a dashing young man in a Spanish bolero costume from her script. It was her father playing El Gallo in a 1968 community CAST theatre production in Germany. She remembers being a mesmerized 6 year old, watching the rehearsals and perfor- mances. It was the beginning of her life in the theatre. While Jan’s dad, David Hubert, has been gone many years now, those memories remain vivid and tender.

Deep in December, it’s nice to remember, Deep in December, our hearts should remember, And follow.

Happy 15th Anniversary to SHOWTUNES, and thank you to all who make it happen THE MUSICIANS onstage, behind the scenes, and in the audience. Here’s to the love of musicals! It is currently running in a show, 110 In The Shade, was successfully revived a few years ago by the and is scheduled for a new Broadway production this April, produced by the Roundabout Theatre, starring Audra MacDonald. I Do! I Do!, their two character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, was a success on Broadway and is frequently done around the country and the world. (One production, in Minneapolis, played for twenty-two continuous years with the same two actors in the leading roles.) For several years, Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theatre workshop, concentrating on small-scale mu- sicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts were Celebration, which moved to Broadway, and Philemon, which won an Outer Critics Circle Award. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the Off-Broadway play Colette, starring Zoe Caldwell, then later did a full-scale musical version under the title Colette Collage. In 1998, The Show Goes On, a musical revue featuring their theatre songs and starring Jones and Schmidt, was presented at the York Theatre, and Mirette, their musical based on the award-winning children’s book, was premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. In addition to an and the 1992 Special Tony Award for The Fantasticks, their “stars” were added in 1999 to the Off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
