Casa GGG is ideally situated in a quiet neighbor- hood, a short walk from the center of town. En- ter the iron gate and wooden door, and the plain facade reveals a design so sumptuous it’s near perfection.

There are 2 places in San Miguel de Allende. One is inside thick walls in sanctuary of Casa GGG, and other is the rest of the town, which is a beauty. Upon arrival, Juan, the caretaker, was there to greet us and give us a tour so we could decide which of the 4 suites would be our home for the next 5 days.

Each opened doorway had us gasping like delight- ed 3 year olds, pointing out the personal touches- the lounging chairs, the reading nooks, the fire- places.

We chose Gustos, one of the 2 upstairs suites- which was perfect for us. The bedroom was small- like a cozy nest, but it came with a nearly equal size bathroom with walk-in shower, jetted tub, double vanity, and outdoor shower, as well as a walk-in closet. The outdoor balcony was a treat, the walls partially covered in trumpet flowers.

We were also indulged with a sitting room with enormous leather couch, minibar, and satellite TV. San Miguel de Allende is a haven for expat retirees and visitors seeking a European cultural feel without a transatlan- tic flight. People dress up a bit here, we saw more than one man with a sweater draped over a button down shirt. Some women wear skirts and heels, unthinkable to me who had to watch every step in this hilly, cobblestoned city.

5 TIPSKeeping TO MOM In The Picture

Article &Photos by Tyann Marcink of Marcink Designs

22 - Vacation Rental Travels | Spring 2014 VacationRentalTravels.com Mom is missing - again!

It happens every stinking time! On the last one, we thought it was better. But as soon as we were on the airplane home, we realized that mom was missing, yet again.

Retrace our steps? We are out of time. Call the authorities? They can’t do anything about it. Get mad? Don’t waste your energy. We flipped through the photos on the back of the camera. Mom was nowhere to be found.

So if mom is missing, was she even really there in the first place? If the photographs documenting the family vacation don’t have mom in them, where was mom?

Mom was behind the camera, creating the pictures. And sometimes Dad or another family member will go missing from a family vacation as well.

But it doesn’t have to be like that. No one needs to be missing from their family vacation photos. Here are five ways to make sure Mom doesn’t disappear from the family vacation again.

1. Assign each person a turn with the camera. The first person I always hand my camera off to is my husband. On this occasion, he captured a high five between our youngest son and me on the mini golf course.. Another person to consider is your children. Their viewpoint of your getaway will amaze you (that is, after you delete all of the blurry shots).

This winter I took my boys to an indoor rope climbing facility. I joined in on the fun and wanted proof that I actually climbed, so I handed my iPhone to my 10 year old. He wasn’t too concerned with getting a shot and decided to just take 200 photos and hope that mom likes one of them.

After deleting 199 blurry photos, we had this one of me flying through the air on my way down from ringing the bell at the top. Yep, I’m a super mom.

2. Take some selfies. Turn the camera around and smile. But remember to also include some of the background in the photo so that you can see where you were.

One of the reasons you snap a photo is to help you remember where you were and what you were doing at the time. If you completely fill in the frame with just faces, you lose part of the story.

My oldest son and I toured Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, and here we are standing inside the Cardinals’ locker room. On the second photo, my youngest son and I are at a baseball game, and you can see from the other fans in the background, our Cardinals were playing the Atlanta Photos from the top: Braves. Mom has been kept in the picture in this shot that was taken by a family member (first photo and image on the previous 3. Ask a stranger. This one may be difficult if you’re a compositional freak like me. The average page. The second photo is our family person will automatically center the group of people in the photo, and then fill the frame with the hamming it up a bit on a remote shutter bodies. This means that the photo usually lacks the surrounding background. release shot.

The next two photos are “selfies” from But it’s an easy fix. Simply set your shot up, adjust your focus point to where your head will be, Busch Stadium, a sure way to keep yourself in the picture. and wait for the next stranger to walk by. Then, explain that you want the focus point on your face and to shoot a few frames. Most people are happy to oblige to specific instructions, knowing that The last photo on this page was taken by my 10 year old son. you will end up with the photograph you requested. Obviously that is not always possible. So the next best thing is to work with what you get.

Facebook.com/VacationRentalTravels Vacation Rental Travels | Spring 2014 - 23

The first thing is to always make sure you know where you want the stranger to stand when he snaps the photo. Whether you stand in that spot and wait for someone to walk by or if you make a mental note and then lead the person to the spot, just having the location of the camera set up will make a huge difference in the resulting photo.

So after the stranger completely ignored that you want the group in the bottom third of the photo, you look at the result and see that you are centered in the picture.

Easy fix. Open your favorite editing program, do a little crop and zoom, add your favorite filter, and share to Instagram.

4. Use a remote shutter release or a timer. Nearly every camera has a timer to delay the shutter button, or you can use a remote shutter release if you have one handy.

If you are using your smartphone, there are several apps that have a built in timer as well. My favorite app for a delayed shutter is the free version of Top Camera.

Have you ever been on a romantic walk on a deserted beach at sunset with your loved one and wished you had a photo of it? Simply find a solid spot to rest your camera and start shooting with the timer or remote shutter.

On a Michigan vacation, our family found a deserted spot overlooking Lake Michigan and decided it would be a great place for a few family photos. We spent nearly 30 minutes hitting the timer on the camera and coming up with fun poses.

We may or may not have shots of us mooning the camera…

5. Splurge on the touristy photos. Yes, these photos are expensive, but it isn’t necessary to purchase every single forced photo at an attraction.

These photos do succeed on capturing some fun emotions when they are snapped at precise moments, like the big, scary drop on a roller coaster ride. Figure one of these into your budget, and then secure your camera before buckling up for a thrill ride.

It does take a group effort to get Mom back into the vacation photos, but it is possible to bring mom back.

Photos from the top: The “stranger photo” is taken and the photo looks like it was taken from a mile away (first photo), you can use your favorite editing software to zoom and crop to still get a good shot (second photo). A Sanctuary For The Soul

Mommy, I want to climb that tree!

Light dances through misty morning fog, flickering through gently swaying timbers cradling the cabin like “You mean you want to go upstairs?” my daughter asked. Rock-A-Bye-Baby.

“Yes, yes! I want to climb that tree!” Every time you wake up among the trees it’s like sleeping in a treehouse. Every time you climb the stairs, regardless of your age, it feels like you’re climbing a tree.

On this, our fourth visit to Below the Falls Lodge, our daughter and her family of five joined my husband and me - along with our dog Annabelle - as we made the drive up the river and deep into the forested coast hills.

We followed sloughs, creeks, and forks of rivers as the road continued to narrow and a canopy of myrtlewood trees and mossy-limbed big leaf maples beckoned the way. The forest bed blanketed with ferns, ivy and more moss.

A Treehouse For Kids of All Ages

Below the Falls Lodge is perfectly seated a mile below Golden and Silver Falls State Park, 22 miles, or half an hour’s drive from Coos Bay on a good day. It’s a magical cabin; hand-hewn from indigenous trees logged and milled right on the property.

We arrived with a car full of groceries and our hearts full of hope. Unlike our first visit where we over-planned and over packed, we knew the only thing we’d need was fresh groceries.

A fire crackled in the wood stove before we arrived. Familiarity made it easy to drop our bags, grab a book and cup of tea; nuzzle up and cozy in for the duration.

Up the massive tree trunk staircase to the second floor are two suites separated by a suspended plank bridge, vaulted ceilings, three 8’ skylights in each bedroom and roped swinging beds.

Custom designed, Tiffany windows in the dining hall at historic Flagler College, down a block and a half to the inspired cathedral of Memorial Presbyterian Church, directly next door at the Villa at Kirkside with its Haint Blue ceiling in the bathroom, St. Augustine is an unexpected cultural jewel in Florida.
