HMS Westminster exercise Freedom of the City The company of Royal Navy’s HMS Westminster marched through the capital’s streets last month exercising their Freedom of the City. Westminster City Council gave the ship the Freedom of the City in 2005 but it is the first time officers and crew have taken up the right in five years. They were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Ruth Bush.

Westminster unveils hidden network of heroes helping people sleeping rough Westminster City Council’s Hidden Network campaign is highlighting the professionals and volunteers who provide life-changing help to people sleeping rough across the city. The campaign is asking the public to donate directly to charities in Westminster that can provide long-term support to help people off the streets. The charities include St Mungo’s, The Passage, Look Ahead, Turning Point, West London Mission and The Connection at St Martin’s. By giving to the charities that make up the hidden network instead of giving money directly to those who beg or ask, your support can make a real difference

25 Beachcroft leads the way on homes for older residents Cllr Heather Acton and Cllr Rachael Robathan this summer celebrated the ‘topping out’ of Westminster’s new state-of-the art care home, Beachcroft House

Beachcroft is the first care home to be delivered as part of Westminster City Council’s Specialist Housing Strategy for Older People (SHSOP). The SHSOP was developed following a review of housing stock for older people and it aims to tackle problems like social isolation and frailty. The council is working to create homes with in-built flexibility in order to respond to changing care needs. Artist impression of Beachcroft House

Flu symptoms can come on very quickly. It is a viral infection of the nose, mouth, throat and lungs which causes sudden fever, cough, headache, tiredness and muscle and joint pain. Flu is easily transmitted by coughing and sneezing. How can I protect against it? New strains of the flu emerge year-on-year which is why the vaccine should be given each year. Even if you had the flu vaccine last year, you will need another this year. Now is the best time to vaccinate against flu, don’t put it off. 31 Reaching out to elderly residents at home For our elderly and vulnerable tenants, home visits are just one of the ways in which the council makes its housing services accessible to those most in need of our support

These visits are intended to check-in with our tenants to ask them about their wellbeing and make sure there are no issues such as repairs needed in their home. Peggy Steers, 90 has lived in Marylebone for over 30 years “I enjoy the visits from staff. I think they are very good for people, especially those living in isolation, and it’s also a chance to talk about any issues which they can investigate. I feel the staff are trustworthy, helpful and I’ve enjoyed talking with them. These visits are also useful when you have mobility issues like me and it’s difficult to get around to the offices. It’s really helpful to be able to speak to the staff in my home.”
