2 MARCH 2017 President’s Report

To improve our Walks & Cycling Program the Club would like your help. The Improvement Project Team set up to identify areas of our activity program that could be improved has launched a survey asking about members’ preferences and suggestions for improving the activities offered. The survey is now online at https://goo.gl/forms/OK5ZlzcD8pUQt59x1. The survey is important to help in planning future activity programs and I urge you to complete it so that we can know your opinion.

The club is looking for volunteers with basic PC computer skills and prepared to be available at the critical monthly Circular preparation dates. The position can be shared so different people can do different months. The task is preparing the trips and events and trip reports data from the website database. It takes about two hours and is a time-critical task, needing to be done each month between the Thursday previews closing date and the following Tuesday Circular closing date. The volunteer can work on their own Windows PC after it has been set up with the necessary files. Macs are not suitable. Please email the Secretary Jane Long at [email protected] to register your interest. Full training will be provided.

The training for new and prospective Coordinators will be on Sunday 28 May 2017. If you have been thinking about making the step to coordinating a walk or if you have already coordinated several walks and would like to learn more then you should attend this training.

It is important to keep growing our pool of coordinators, especially for those who like to walk at the weekend. Our walking program depends on members volunteering to coordinate walks. This training will help you identify the steps to prepare and plan a walk, what to do on the walk and outline the mentoring program to support you during the first walks that you coordinate. See page 8 in the Circular for more details.

Ski and Hut Notes Working Bees & Hut Orientation The January working bee was very well attended. The toilets were emptied and are working. However, at the time of writing we are yet to wire the new toilet fan to the LED panels batteries – so some odour until then. The next working bee is on 27–28 May. All welcome. Bookings To book the Club hut at Lake Dobson, please ring Fred Koolhof on 6225 4216, or myself on 6239 6178 or from 19 March contact Simon Benham, who is standing in for me, on 6239 1104 or email [email protected]. At departure, please leave a good kindling supply and the hut at least as clean as found on arrival. Andrew Davey, Ski & Hut Secretary

Coordinator Training Program for new and prospective Coordinators If you have been thinking about coordinating a walk or if you have already coordinated several walks and would like some additional information, then read on. The Club Walking Program is dependent on Coordinators to schedule and organise walks for all members to enjoy. It is therefore important to keep growing our pool of coordinators especially for those who like to walk at the weekend. To help you make the step to coordinating a walk, the Club is conducting a training session for members to identify the steps to prepare and plan a walk, what to do on the walk, discuss some of the risks and to learn about the mentoring program to support you during the first walks that you coordinate. The training program will he held on: Date: Sunday 28 May 2017 Venue: Tas. Bridge Association Club Rooms Marine Esplanade, New Town Bay Time: 9 am – 1 pm MARCH 2017 9 To register for the training program please email your details to the Club Secretary Jane Long at [email protected]. If you would like more information about the training please contact Rupert Manners on 6292 1310 or Philip Le Grove on 6224 4280.

From there, we drop down into Bull Bay where, over lunch, we can inspect the remains of a former whaling station. The return trip to the vehicles follows a bush track looking over Patricks Bight to Storm Bay and beyond. It’s a 5.5-hr circuit, including stops. 27 Apr – 4 May EXT Penguin Cradle Trail MM Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 or 6292 1310 [email protected] This walk goes from the coastal town of Penguin to the start of the at Cradle Valley. It crosses low, forested ranges and then goes through the rugged Leven Canyon and then over the Black Bluff range to Cradle Valley, a total distance of about 80 km. The standard varies from easy to a more difficult section through the canyon. The route crosses the Black Bluff Range, which is best done in reasonable weather. Depending on the forecast we might do the walk the other way from Cradle to Penguin. Suitable for fit prospectives. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Number limit. Book with the coordinator by 14 April.

18–21 May EXT Miena Base Camp MR Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 or 6292 1310 [email protected] This is a base camp staying at a fisherman's shack in Miena. The peaks on the agenda are Jilletts Tier, Billop Bluff, Mt Patrick, Mt Penny West and Split Rock. There are also other peaks that could be explored if there is time and inclination. Some of the walks are quite short so we may do a couple to fill in the day. Most of these will be off-track so expect some scrub and rock; hopefully, not too much. The accommodation will cost around $35 per person per night, depending on final numbers. We will go out to the pub for one night. Full wet weather gear required. Number limit. Suitable for fit prospectives. Book with the coordinator by 4 May.

Book with the coordinator by 1 June. 26 MARCH 2017 TRIP REPORTS 8 Dec Montrose, Old Beach, Pontville Kevin Smith Seven determined cyclists battled wind and rain but were not deterred in their quest for a ride and pub lunch at Pontville!

15 Dec Grove to Ranelagh John McDonald John McDonald, Margaret McDonald, David Pears, Les Crompton, Sharon West, Christine Spry, Nick Hume, Tony Rae, Jane Monaghan, Maggie McKerracher, Gill Mosmann

21 Dec Boronia Beach/Hill Jeanette Brown It was a great walk for all but the leader who slipped and injured her knee! Felicity took over the leadership role while Jeanette was driven home. Jeanette’s early departure from the walk meant that afternoon tea was served and ready when the 20 walkers arrived at the end of the walk.

23–31 Dec Cruisy Xmas Escape – South Coast Track Andreas Hack A very luvly Xmas escape with unbelievable weather was had by Susanne, Esther, Tom and Andreas. It often felt like we were in the tropics rather than Tassie. Only one day of rain, which we spent mostly at Louisa Bay. We even briefly thought about camping on top of the Ironbounds. Pics have been posted at HWC Facebook page. The only minor issue was the lack of reliable water at the Prion Beach boat crossing camp. The Milford Creek bypass due to beach erosion near the New River Lagoon outflow was not nearly as bad as many told us. It adds maybe 20 minutes walking time. Thanks everyone for a fab trip. Should do this sort of thing more often!

24 Dec Peter Murrell Res/Tinderbox Hills Midj Jones An enjoyable walk to relax and soak in views before the rigours of Christmas Day and a welcome interlude between the rushed Christmas Eve shopping of Saturday morning and the frantic last-minute shopping of Saturday afternoon. Unusual sightings included a close- up swoop of a wedge-tailed eagle, a flop-eared escapee pet bunny and an incipient sea fog beginning to roll up to the River Derwent.

2 Jan Toddlers Toddle Angela Devine The weather was fine and 24 adults and children enjoyed a leisurely stroll northwards from Cornelian Bay and back through the emery to the playground.

3–12 Jan Andrew Davey David Young graciously offered help to boat walkers over Lake Gordon – thanks. The trip went well but for some health and heat effects. Dale, Rohan, Grant, Angela & Andrew did most of the scrub-bashing. Day 1: boated over Lake Gordon with help of David Young, walked steeply up Pleiades to camp in a saddle near a stream. Day 2: walked north to first three lakes north of the ridge from Pokana to Shining areas. Day 3: warm to hot walk to Font and ascended the local Abels, camped a little north of Font with splendid views. Day 4: lake to high plateau near Shining overlooking Spires, ascending Conical and MARCH 2017 27 Shining. Day 5: to Font, ascended Flame, Flame Peak and False Dome, then camped near small pool above Font to north. Day 6: (warm) Innes High Rocky and Philps LO. Day 7: (very windy, minor drizzle) returned past Shining to lake of day 2. Day 8: ascended Pokana Peak on the way to Lake Gordon for exit before forecast strong winds for some days. Andrew made three boat trips until just after sunset to transfer as many walkers over Lake Gordon as safe. The first trip was rough in places. Day 9: the few remaining walkers were transferred across Lake Gordon in two trips. All walkers returned home via a late morning tea stop. All found it a hard trip. We were most fortunate to have great weather but for all but a few hours of the trip. The difficulties due to health or fitness were handled without impairing the trip, which eventually exceeded time expectations due to the good efforts of most. (Even the Coordinator suffered a prolonged reaction due to a soy- containing food.) Some reported their best walking trip ever.

4 Jan Shipstern and Tunnel Bay area Bernd Janisch On a fine day with perfect walking conditions, 33 contented walkers completed the first circuit walk in years into the Shipstern and Tunnel Bay area. The recently opened section had nice sections of forest and a good, relatively easy track to follow, made all the more memorable by several steep ascents.

7 Jan MONA Margaret Gibbs A small group on a very hot day enjoyed learning more about the Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park.

9 Jan Sandy Bay to Hobart Rob Hill I know a loss of 10 per cent of walkers being acceptable is a (untruthful) Club myth, but over 50 per cent is unthinkable! However, leaders of urban walks must accept the attrition of punters. (‘Just going to catch the bus home here!’ is inevitable). A great walk. Nobody took the swim option. A person in a hi-vis yellow coat on the real Blinking Billy (washing off the seagull poo no doubt) made me speculate that a certain member may have taken ‘morning tea at Blinking Billy’ literally – but no. The remaining 5 of the 11 walkers selected to do the optional beach walk around Battery Point. A very low tide made this easy. Again an SE turns into an SM. Ah, well!

9 Jan Toddlers Toddle Helen Dalla-Fontana Seventeen of us walked to the morning tea spot under the pine trees. The male children made a fort (not wanting help from the girls), and then 14 continued to the end of the walk, three returning to the cars early.

10 Jan Cape Queen Elizabeth Jill Andrews After morning tea on Mars Bluff we proceeded to check out the ‘cardboard goblet’. All in order there, we set off to the wonderful views from the cape at lunchtime. A couple of black snakes seen but luckily no close encounters. A bracing swim capped off a lovely day as the low tide allowed us to get around the rocks.

28 MARCH 2017 11 Jan Whalers Lookout Jenny Ford Forty people enjoyed a lovely day on the East Coast. Some went swimming at Cockle Bay. Most of us had lunch on top of Whalers Lookout. We were not able to cross over the lagoon entrance – it was too wide and deep! Thank you very much to the two landowners who gave us permission to walk on their land. We appreciate their kindness.

11–15 Jan Tyndalls and Mt Murchison Rupert Manners The Tyndalls part of the trip was fantastic. We climbed to the Plateau on the Wednesday and on the Thursday, in very atmospheric mist, we GPSed our way to Mt Geikie. We didn't go to the summit. In the afternoon the mist cleared and we went up Mt Tyndall, with its fantastic views. We descended on the Friday in pouring horizontal rain and retired to Mary Cuthbertson's Queenstown cottage – a wonderful relief from the weather. The rain continued on the Saturday so we gave up on Mt Murchison and drove home, visiting Nelson Falls, Donaghue Lookout and an art exhibition at Lake St Clair.

12–14 Jan Teds Beach base camp John Kerrison Cancelled due to weather forecast.

14 Jan Mt Sprent Carolynne Smith Unfavourable forecast. Mt Sprent not an option. Three adventurers had a good 5.5-hour return leg stretch along Holley Rd in search of Gilbert Leitch Huon Pine Reserve. The ‘road’ is being reclaimed by vegetation, and the signage announcing the reserve is not evident. Lunch was had ‘who knows where’ on a log in the forest with friendly leeches. Nevertheless, an outing of mystery suitable for a rainy day. Had a relaxing, therapeutic swim in the pool, then suitable dinner at Lodge.

14 Jan Dog Walk – Lowestoft Bay to Windermere Bay Dawn Hendrick Despite the blustery conditions eight humans and eight canines set off on a 6 km walk from the now vacant Berriedale caravan park to Windermere Bay. There was much dashing about and jumping in and out of the water (by dogs only!).

14 Jan Mays Beach Mary Foster Three walkers started off in gale-force winds, we were met by two late comers just before morning tea. By the time we got half way the winds had abated, but the tide was very high. We had a leisurely lunch on the northern end of Mays Beach, then back to the cars.

15 Jan Adamsons Peak Paul Geeves This was a trip to one of the iconic peaks of southern Tasmania. Ten walkers formed our party. The mostly fine weather made for an enjoyable trip to the summit. We did not proceed beyond the summit, as it was too windy on top to do so. We did get fairly good views from the top. We were back at the cars by 5 pm.

MARCH 2017 29 16 Jan Roches Beach to Seven Mile Beach Garry Hulme A small but perfectly formed group of four set off from Roches Beach at 10 am. A short amble saw us taking morning tea at 10.30 and arriving at Seven Mile Beach by 11.30. To ease the stress of such exertion we had a refreshing swim followed by lunch. The trip back along the cliff top track was scenic and relaxing. As advertised, SE indeed.

17 Jan Mt Fortescue Circuit Kerry Scott We all had a great walk along this magnificent coastline. Along the way we stopped in at Retakunna and the ranger (Jess) allowed us to have a good look at the site. Had lunch on top of Mt Fortescue and then enjoyed the wonderful forest atmosphere on the way to Cape Hauy junction. Thanks all for your assistance and cooperation on this walk.

18 Jan Two Huts Tasman Peninsula Warwick Risby Eighteen walkers completed the day in 6.5 hrs on a cooler and, at times, very windy day. Highlights were visiting the two huts. At Retakunna, the friendly lady ranger provided helpful info as we inspected the comfortable sleeping cabins and spotlessly clean kitchen and dining area. We then continued to the Munro site with similar facilities, where viewing from the helipad provided rewarding coastal views during our lunch stop. Returning the same way on the Old Cape Pillar track, one member had an unfortunate bloody fall but recovered quickly. We were treated to seeing an echidna, tiger snake and a small flock of yellow-tailed black cockatoos during the day – very exciting for our 14-year-old visitor from WA under the President's responsibility. A late arvo tea was enjoyed at Fortescue Bay before returning home from a great day's walk.

18 Jan Mount Elizabeth Judy Bond In Judy Bond's enforced absence on the high seas, Felicity Walch and Jeanette Brown took on leadership of this walk, hoping that between them they could remember the route. This proved a false hope, but the summit was reached after an impromptu steep uphill bush bash, changing this walk from SE to SM (or SR!). There was brief panic at lunch when only 29 were accounted for but another count made it to the 30 who had signed on. To the leaders' considerable relief, one of our 30 found a track (thank you again!) to get the party from the summit to the cars. Thank you everyone for your patience and humour!

18 Jan Slide Track Working Bee Rupert Manners Six Club members and six Bruny Islanders combined to re-clear the Slide Track. The winter winds and rain had made the section by Haulage Bay particularly bad but the whole track is pretty clear now.

19 Jan Orana Picnic Bob Wyatt Fifty-four members (mostly cyclists!) enjoyed the picnic at Orana with a BBQ. Phyl outlined the history of the camp and reported that the Club had been picnicking there for 34 years.

30 MARCH 2017 19 Jan Orana Picnic Jenny Ford We rode from Lauderdale Canal to Seven Mile Beach, Pittwater Rd junction for morning tea, then back to Orana to join, then picnic and swim. We had a lovely day. Thank you to the Orana organisers – a 25 km ride.

19 Jan Mt Brown, Crescent Bay Stacy Kirkby Delightful walk in a beautiful part of the world on a perfect day. Unexpected meeting of Pandani Club on the summit of Mt Brown meant we found new lunch spot on the cliff edge above the climbers cliffs – gave us spectacular views.

21 Jan Lambert Gully and Mt Nelson Wendy Pearson Twelve walkers completed a circuit on Mt Nelson. We left from Lambert Ave, climbed up steps in Lambert Gully and had lunch at the Signal Station. After lunch we used different tracks to return. Pleasant, cool conditions on this four-hour walk.

22 Jan Mt Wedge Lee Douglas Fabulous summer weather with wonderful views all around. Quite a few trees over the forest track. This was a first visit for some people in the group.

23 Jan Dog Walk Seven Mile Beach Rob Hill Seven people, five dogs, a lovely wide beach and pleasant company. David showed us a nice shady lunch spot in the dunes, complete with table.

24 Jan Bicentennial Park, Mt Nelson Jane Long Despite threats of high winds and showers, a fine walk with some impressive views was enjoyed by the cheerful group of 27 walkers. A couple of solid hills got hearts pumping and lungs puffing!

26 Jan Huonville, Judbury Gail Friesen Twenty riders (a record for the moderate easy group) enjoyed a very pleasant cycle through the Huon countryside on Australia Day. Instead of lamingtons, the highlight of morning tea was Dianne's rhubarb cake.

26 Jan Tinpot Island Jim Baptist Australia Day! Did this in a figure of eight circuit (if you can have such a thing!) to include Pauls Hill and to take advantage of the lower tide for the coastal section. Bit windy but we found sheltered spots for food and drink stops. Adventurous group of 17 completed the walk in six hours covering 16 km.

28 Jan South Arm Josephine Petrov Fifteen walkers and one prospective member enjoyed a pleasant walk on a mild day around South Arm. We were able to climb Ben Hill having garnered permission, which gave us a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. No swimming as the day deteriorated at lunchtime! An enjoyable day out. MARCH 2017 31 CYCLING PROGRAM All rides at own risk.

14–17 Apr EXT Caveside Easter Camp SE/mod/cyc Tony and Linda Cook 6228 4986 [email protected] The farm-based camp is located under the Great Western Tiers. Easter is serene, and in my opinion, Caveside is the best medicine in a bottle. There are many fabulous walks to do, and the quiet country roads offer champagne cycling. Easter is a little later this year, so please make sure you do have suitable clothing, and a pair of gumboots just in case of the odd shower. The camp is down in dear Joe Parsons' paddock and fresh water is available on tap. Toilets are located inside the Caveside Community Pool Complex, which is adjacent to the paddock (please bring your own toilet paper to avoid embarrassment). There are no shower facilities. I strongly recommend bringing your own portable BBQs etc. to help reduce dear old Joe's workload. Eskies are recommended. Feel free to pursue your own agendas or just relax with a book. The Cooks' Traditional Happy Hour is very popular, so bring your treats to share and enjoy the company of friends around the campfire at night. Bookings are required. Prospectives welcome. Emails preferred or phone in the evenings. 36 MARCH 2017
