Jones Register Contributor Jan. 28 marked the 17th Annual Ronald E. McNair Day. It honors outstanding Aggie Ronald E. McNair. McNair was born on Oct. 21, 1950, in Lake City, SC. He graduated valedictori- an of Carver High School in 1967. Upon graduation, he ventured to Aggieland where he joined Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. In 1971, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. In 1975, he went on to study laser physics in France. The following year, he obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1978, he was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. His first flight as a mission specialist took place on Feb. 3, 1984. On Jan. 28, 1986, McNair died aboard the space shuttle Challenger approximately one minute after its take off.
