FALL/ WINTER 2015 THE NEWSLETTER OF MAINE RIVERS KENNEBEC SALMON RESTORATION: Innovation to Improve the Odds Walking thigh-deep into a cold stream in January in Maine? The idea takes a little getting used to, but Paul Christman doesn’t have a hard time finding volunteers to do just that to help with salmon egg planting. Christman is a scientist with Maine Department of Marine Resource. His work, patterned on similar efforts in Alaska, involves taking fertilized salmon eggs from a hatchery and planting them directly into the cold gravel of the best stream habitat throughout the Sandy River, a Kennebec tributary northwest of Waterville. Yes, egg planting takes place in the winter. For Maine Rivers board member Sam Day plants salmon eggs in a tributary of the Sandy River more than a decade Paul has brought staff and water, Paul and crews mimic what female salmon volunteers out on snowshoes and ATVs, and with do: Create a nest or “redd” in the gravel of a river waders and neoprene gloves for this remarkable or stream where she plants her eggs in the fall, undertaking. JOHN RIVER The waters of the St. John River flow from their headwaters in Maine to the Bay of Fundy, and for many miles serve as the boundary between Maine and Quebec. Waters of the St. John also flow over the Mactaquac Dam, erected in 1968, which currently produces a substantial amount of power for New Brunswick. Efforts are underway now to evaluate the future of the Mactaquac Dam because its mechanical structure is expected to reach the end of its service life by 2030 due to problems with the concrete portions of the dam’s station. -

O’Donovan, Division Director OFFICIAL LIST OF PUBLIC WATERS Published Pursuant to RSA 271:20 II (effective June 26, 1990) IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this list for determining water bodies that are subject to the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act (CSPA). The CSPA list is available on the NHDES website. Public waters in New Hampshire are prescribed by common law as great ponds (natural waterbodies of 10 acres or more in size), public rivers and streams, and tidal waters. These common law public waters are held by the State in trust for the people of New Hampshire. The State holds the land underlying great ponds and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) in trust for the people of New Hampshire. Generally, but with some exceptions, private property owners hold title to the land underlying freshwater rivers and streams, and the State has an easement over this land for public purposes. Several New Hampshire statutes further define public waters as including artificial impoundments 10 acres or more in size, solely for the purpose of applying specific statutes. Most artificial impoundments were created by the construction of a dam, but some were created by actions such as dredging or as a result of urbanization (usually due to the effect of road crossings obstructing flow and increased runoff from the surrounding area). -

Partnership Opportunities for Lake-Friendly Living Service Providers NH LAKES LakeSmart Program Only with YOUR help will New Hampshire’s lakes remain clean and healthy, now and in the future. The health of our lakes, and our enjoyment of these irreplaceable natural resources, is at risk. Polluted runoff water from the landscape is washing into our lakes, causing toxic algal blooms that make swimming in lakes unsafe. Failing septic systems and animal waste washed off the land are contributing bacteria to our lakes that can make people and pets who swim in the water sick. Toxic products used in the home, on lawns, and on roadways and driveways are also reaching our lakes, poisoning the water in some areas to the point where fish and other aquatic life cannot survive. NH LAKES has found that most property owners don’t know how their actions affect the health of lakes. We’ve also found that property owners want to do the right thing to help keep the lakes they enjoy clean and healthy and that they often need help of professional service providers like YOU! What is LakeSmart? The LakeSmart program is an education, evaluation, and recognition program that inspires property owners to live in a lake- friendly way, keeping our lakes clean and healthy. The program is free, voluntary, and non-regulatory. Through a confidential evaluation process, property owners receive tailored recommendations about how to implement lake-friendly living practices year-round in their home, on their property, and along and on the lake. Property owners have access to a directory of lake- friendly living service providers to help them adopt lake-friendly living practices. -

Water Quality in Seboeis River February 2020 Contact: Emily Zimmermann, Biologist Phone: (207) 446-1003 MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 17 State House Station | Augusta, Maine 04333-0017 www.maine.gov/dep Maine Department of Environmental Protection Water Quality in Wassataquoik Stream Introduction Despite the restoration efforts of numerous groups since the 1970s, the population size of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has remained low (USASAC 2018). On the Penobscot River, access has been improved by removing two major dams and constructing a bypass around a third (PRRT 2018), but three main stem dams remain between Seboeis River, a major tributary to the East Branch Penobscot River, and the ocean. The Maine Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) stopped stocking juvenile salmon in Seboeis River in 2014 due to low parr production. This stream has spawning and rearing habitat of good quality, however the watershed is likely oligotrophic, as are many nearby waters. This study investigated the hypothesis that water quality in Seboeis River exceeds stress thresholds or contains levels of nutrients too low for salmon growth. Methods Study Location Seboeis River has a large, undeveloped watershed of 705 km2, with 15% conserved land, including Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Seboeis River Gorge Preserve, and Maine Bureau of Parks and Land (MBPL). The river is Maine Statutory Class AA, and its tributaries are Class A. The area has a history of industrial logging. The bedrock geology in the study area is predominantly marine sandstone and slate with some volcanics in the center of the watershed, and a small amount of granite (MGS 2019). -

Water Quality Summary for Kenduskeag Stream and Upper Watershed Tributaries By Mark Whiting, Maine Department of Environmental Protection In Collaboration with Ed Lindsey Old Town High School (formerly of Central High School) March 24, 2006 DEPLW0762 Water quality summary for Kenduskeag Stream and upper watershed tributaries By Mark Whiting, Maine DEP, March 2006 Introduction: General Watershed Characteristics: Kenduskeag Stream is the largest tributary to the Penobscot River located below the first dam at Veazie. For this reason, Kenduskeag Stream has been of interest in Maine’s salmon recovery program. The Penobscot River is the largest salmon river in Maine and it has most of the remaining Atlantic salmon (ASC 2004). However a string of dams restricts fish access to the upper river. Salmon have been maintained by fish ladders, natural reproduction in the mainstem and lower tributaries, and fish stocking by Penobscot-specific strains of salmon. Fortunately, an agreement with the dam owners, federal and state agencies, the Penobscot Indian Nation, and other private organizations will provide for the removal of the two lower dams (Veazie and Great Works), a natural looking bypass channel at another dam (Howland), and improved fish passage at four additional dams. This will improve access to over 500 river miles of fish habitat. Kenduskeag Stream is 36 miles long and has a watershed of 215 square miles. The mainstem has 12 named tributaries with subwatersheds that range in size from 3-26 square miles. French Stream, Black Stream and Crooked Brook are the largest tributaries with 26.3, 26.0 and 19.2 square miles respectively (Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District watershed plan, 1988).
