Jaco Three Views of His Secrets
26 bassplayer.com /january2016 Jaco Three Views of his secreTs By e.e. Bradman About hAlf An hour into the new documentary Jaco, there’s a scene that reflects a cru- cial aspect of the Jaco Pastorius legend. It’s the fall of 1975, and Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby has flown a virtually unknown Jaco from Ft. Lauderdale to New York to record his debut with jazz luminaries Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, Wayne Shorter, and Lenny White. The product of those sessions, the soulful, eclectic stunner simply titled Jaco Pastorius, would shake the bass world to its foundations, of course, but the album cover—with its bold lettering across a no-nonsense black & white portrait by Don Hunstein—might suggest that the unsmiling young maestro was overly serious about making a good first impression. That wasn’t true at all. “It was wild,” says Return To Forever drummer Lenny White of the sessions in October 1975. “Basically, we would play, do a take, and go outside and play basketball.” “We could have done it on bicycles with microphones, and he would have played it perfectly,” remembers producer Colomby, still impressed four decades later. Far from nervous, in fact, 23-year-old Jaco was natural, relaxed, and in his element. “I walked into the studio, and Jaco’s eyes were lit up because he had found home—this was the level he belonged on,” recalls trombonist/musical direc- tor Peter Graves. These quintessential Pastorius hallmarks—soul- ful virtuosity, athletic showmanship, and superhu- man technique, with confidence to burn—are central bassplayer.com / january2016 27 CS JACO JEFF YEAGER Robert Trujillo themes of Jaco. -

The concerts were historic on multiple levels, serving as the grand opening of San Francisco’s Chase Center, reuniting the band and Symphony for the first time since the 1999 performances captured on the Grammy-winning S&M album, and featuring the first-ever symphonic renditions of songs written and released since those original S&M shows. “S&M2 offers an inspired and eye-opening view into not just the shared heritage of classical music and heavy metal, but into the spirit of innovation and to endless vistas awaiting exploration.” - Louder “And it’s also of little surprise, especially for anyone who attended those increasingly legendary shows at Chase last year, that this new album is another major winner. What a great memento of such a monumental night in Bay Area live music history.” - The Mercury News “This collaboration between Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony brings to life the fusion of heavy metal and classical music. As it was in 1999, S&M2 is a grand celebration of the energy and magic that these forms of music convey.” – Metal Wani S&M2 is a landmark release in the Metallica catalogue, both sonically and visually. -

Jerry Cantrell Jerry Cantrell
Jerry Cantrell Jerry Cantrell - vocals / guitar Robert Trujillo - bass Mike Bordin - drums From the lyrically and sonically mournful “Psychotic Break” to when the mental and musical exorcism of Jerry Cantrell's nearly 73-minute aural Degradation Trip concludes with the lovely, somnolent, bluesy strains of “Gone,” the singer/guitarist's Roadrunner debut is a sundry and sometimes scary journey to the center of a psyche. It may not always be a pretty trip, but it's a close-to-the-bone excursion that haunts both its creator and its listeners. As the multi-faceted artist relates, “In '98, I locked myself in my house, went out of my mind and wrote 25 songs,” says the then-fully-bearded Cantrell. “I rarely bathed during that period of writing; I sent out for food, I didn't really venture out of my house in three or four months. It was a hell of an experience. The album is an overview of birth to now. That's all,” he grins, though the visceral and haunting songs, by turns soaring and raw, do reflect that often-naked and sometimes-grim truth. “Boggy Depot [his 1998 solo bow] is like Kindergarten compared to this,” he furthers. “The massive sonic growth from Boggy Depot to Degradation Trip is comparable to the difference between our work in the Alice In Chains albums Facelift to Dirt, which was also a tremendous leap.” And all of Cantrell's 25 prolifically penned songs will see the light of day by 2003. Degradation Trip, which will be released June 18, is comprised of 14 songs from the personal, transcendent writing marathon that inspired such self-searching cuts as “Bargain Basement Howard Hughes,” “Hellbound,” and “Profalse Idol.” The second batch of songs—“as sad and brutal as Degradation Trip” —Cantrell promises, are due out on Roadrunner 2003.
