7 To change life — Vicenç Villatoro

Beyond the ongoing thematic strands that have formed the basis of the CCCB’s programme since it was launched, every year a linking thread has developed, almost like a “family trait”– often in an impromptu, unplanned fashion – that draws on many of the CCCB’s activities, and is shared by projects with very different formats and themes. Many of the key, and most ambitious, activities of the 2016 programme shared one of these “family traits”, in a tenuous yet significant way: a focus on what we could call private space, everyday life, the transformation of habits and conceptions that take place outside public space and also have a political importance. That is why, in the presentation of this programme, we mentioned that if the CCCB’s activities in 2016 were to have a general title, while being aware that this title would be too general and imprecise for the CCCB’s activities, we would probably choose “To change life”. Taking up André Breton’s exhortation which combined Karl Marx’s proposal to change the world and Arthur Rimbaud’s to change life, we became aware that it was worth focusing on these changes in everyday life and the private sphere, which are, perhaps, the ones that most profoundly change the world. Themes such as time management, ageing, the connection between sexual desire and architecture, the challenge of tourism, the role of literary fiction or new ways of audiovisual consumption, which are so closely linked to these seemingly private spaces, were the core themes of the CCCB’s programme in 2016. Based on this more general consideration, and following the thematic strands established in previous years, 2016 saw a marked increase in the number of exhibitions and activities held at the CCCB which had a great impact among the public, both in terms of generating public debate and in the number of visitors to the CCCB and people taking part in its activities. As a result, the CCCB ended the year with the highest numbers on record in terms of the people who have taken part in its activities – around 460,000 – representing an increase of about 75,000 people over the previous year. This increase was seen across the board in the CCCB’s own exhibitions, cultural events, debates and talks. The only decrease was seen in the number of people attending events held at the CCCB when its facilities had been hired out. This increase in the coverage given to our own activities was reflected in our virtual space, where the number of visitors to the CCCB’s offer has grown, on 8

"The thinking machine" exhibition Making Africa - Eyewear design workshop with Cyrus Kabiru 10 average, by 25%. More specifically, our website received 1,310,000 visitors, representing an increase of 30%. To this we must add the 162,000 visitors who have visited the touring exhibitions produced by the CCCB in London, Singapore, Quebec, Mexico, Santiago de Chile and Madrid, to name just some.

—Third culture The thematic strand we refer to as Third culture was one of the main focuses of interest in 2016. It describes the encounter between scientific and humanistic culture. The exhibition “Human +. The future of our species,” opened in late 2015 and ran until early 2016. It was dedicated to the future of the human species based on technological change and attracted more than 100,000 visitors. It was the second most visited exhibition in the CCCB’s history and formed the basis of a series of talks and debates, including the ICREA debates, organised in association with this research institute. During the first quarter of 2016, talks and debates about manipulating awareness, the possibilities of stopping ageing and the enhanced brain were held to tie in with the exhibition “Human +.” Ageing was also the focus of the ICREA debates, held at the end of the year under the general title “Is ageing a disease?,” which featured Miguel Chillón, Maria Pia Cosma, Miquel Vila and Elena Galea. The exhibition “The thinking machine. Ramon Llull and the ars combinatoria” received some 50,000 visitors and also formed the basis of a wide range of activities designed to foster reflection on and raise awareness of Llull and his influence on the contemporary world. The exhibition was held to tie in with Llull Year, and in keeping with the CCCB’s vocation to be a contemporary organisation, was included in the Beta series, which is dedicated to the spaces where the scientific, humanistic and technological worlds overlap. Llull was a proponent of a total vision of knowledge and wisdom and was, in this regard, the precursor of certain trends of scientific thought – that led to cybernetics, to quote just one example – as well as philosophical and theological thought. And, in his desire to bring this wisdom to everyone, he was the first European to practise science and philosophy in the vernacular language, in addition to Latin and Arabic. This particular overview of Llull’s life and work was particularly appealing to many visitors, particularly schools and colleges. The exhibition curator, Amador Vega, explained his view of Llull at one of the talks held to tie in with the exhibition, while Joan Francesc Mira drew a comparison between Llull and Dante. Perejaume – who created one of the key works for the exhibition – directed the poetry reading “Llull in the darkness”, while Josep Maria Mestres Quadreny highlighted Llull’s relationship with the world of music. The opening session of the exhibition featured Amador Vega in conversation with Siegfried Zielinski and Peter Weibel entitled “Ramon Llull, thought and communication” a dialogue that also acts as linking thread to the forthcoming presentation of the exhibition at the prestigious centre for art and media, ZKM, in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2018.

—World city

The thematic strand we refer to as World city is more social and political in tone. Its activities focus directly on the major transformations that change everyday life. The Barcelona Debate was dedicated to time, with contributions ranging from literature and sociology to philosophy about time organisation and its importance in the social order. Taking as its basis the idea expressed by Salvador Cardús that if we know how a society organises its time, we will know almost everything about its power relationships, how it is organised and its values, a series of talks – by Salvador Cardús himself, Judy Wajcman, Menchu Gutiérrez, Marina Garcés, Hartmut Rosa and Patrick Deville – looked at chronological time from different angles. The talks were linked to the initiative to switch time zones in and turn the clocks back an hour and were actually scheduled an hour earlier than usual, at 6.30pm. All the CCCB’s talks on this theme are now held at this time.

The exhibition “1.000 m2 of desire” opened in late 2016 and dealt with the relationship between architecture and sexuality. The exhibition ran until early 2017 and set out to show how different social utopias – particularly in the 18th century, the second half of the 20th century and 21st century – imagined the spaces devoted to unconventional sexual pleasure. From the time of the utopian socialists and 18th-century libertines to Playboy magazine and the hippy movement, an architecture evolved – which was put into practice or not – designed for hitherto private pleasure. Beatriz Colomina gave a lecture about the perversions of modern architecture as part of the exhibition opening and other lectures and debates were held, including one on hair and seduction. Most of these events took place in 2017. 11

The exhibition “Making Africa. A continent of contemporary design” looked at the contemporary world from an African perspective through the visual arts and design. It was supplemented by lectures, debates and musical performances that also provided a vibrant and positive image of creativity in Africa. The exhibition also showcased a series of night-time summer concerts, screenings of new African cinema as well as lectures and panel discussions, featuring, among others, the writers Mia Couto and Chigozie Obioma.

The biennial European Prize for Public Space was also held in 2016. It provides the opportunity to evaluate and present experiments from throughout Europe in which the exemplary management of public space has helped resolve sustainability problems, memory management and social cohesion. The prize has already established its reputation and receives proposals from across Europe, with Eastern Europe having a growing presence. This year a Catalan project and a Polish one received prizes, along with many other thought-provoking entries on themes such as the way town planning can take part in tackling the deep-seated questions of social cohesion, coexistence and the conflictive relationship with the past and memory. These projects will go on to be shown around the world in exhibition format as part of a knowledge-transfer network involving European centres of architecture and interlocutors from many cities.

Throughout the year, we worked on a collaborative project about the political, cultural and social effects of ageing in Europe, in association with the Open Society Foundation. The results will be presented in 2017. Through a variety of knowledge tools, from social sciences to philosophical reflection, from documentaries to theatrical plays, five young European filmmakers and writers have reflected on the cultural and political consequences of the European population pyramids – of which the elderly are a major part – that are often far removed from the stereotypes and prejudices about the attitudes of this age group.

Another key theme dealt with this year in the political and civic sphere, was a reflection on the city and tourism, this time by Xavier Albertí. A short lecture series about Turkey was held as part of a project about European borders that we hope to repeat over the coming years. The writers Zeynep Oral and Elif Shafak came to the CCCB to give talks as part of this project. The CCCB also hosted another academic seminar on contemporary anti-Semitism. The programme of activities from the Institut d’Humanitats, which has always been closely linked to the CCCB, placed particular emphasis on current political and social issues and artistic language, particularly literature.

—Amplified literature Since it was founded, one of the CCCB’s core aims has been to become a meeting point and knowledge hub for the literature that is being produced around the world in order to bring it to a wider audience. The place where leading contemporary writers go and where people can go to meet them and view the current literary scene in context. A house of literature that understands literature as something that goes beyond the traditional concept of the book as a tool. Literature explains the present and although there is no denying that it does so through the book, on paper or in electronic format, it also does so in its amplified format through its impact on the audiovisual world, the performing arts, on narrative in images or with images, on screenplays, song lyrics, theatre projects... The biennial literature festival Kosmopolis is the major showcase for this core aim. For some time now, Kosmopolis has also hosted a permanent programme of literary events over the course of the year that keeps the spirit of the festival alive. In 2016, when there was no festival, Kosmopolis brought some of the leading figures from the literary world to the CCCB. In a more personal and intimate vein it also hosted Primera persona (First person), featuring readings and monologues. Leading authors and contemporary thinkers visited the CCCB. They included Don DeLillo, John Irving, Mia Couto, Adam Zagajewski and the above-mentioned Turkish writers Elif Shafak and Zeynep Oral. Thematic events were held as part of the permanent programme of Kosmopolis, such as the panel discussion about the stomach of the writers, with Jordi Nopca, Anna Dot and Eduard Escofet. Or the session devoted to new European voices, with Juana Adcock, Albert Forns and Erika Fatland. The visit by the writer Svetlana Alexievich and Nobel laureate is worth special mention. She took part in a crowded press conference and a Q & A session with the writer Francesc Serés. Other literary events included a talk by Miquel Berga on Orwell Day, dedicated to the memory of the writer. It explored the way his criticism of totalitarianism holds true today. A workshop on the future of books, seen from different perspectives, was held in association with the publishers Edicions 62. Luciana Castellina spoke about literature in the age of the internet, and Imma Monsó and Sergi Pàmies discussed their relationship as writers with digital technology. 12

—Audiovisual galaxy The permanent changes in the audiovisual galaxy are arguably one of the most visible traits of contemporary culture. The way we access culture, which we could call the culture of the image, is being constantly changed: how, when, where and to what extent we relate to this culture. The general trend has been to shift from the consumption of the audiovisual in shared public spaces to a more personalised access, in a more unambiguous, unidirectional way, as part of a highly diverse offer where new channels of participation open up and genres and formats are permanently altered as a result of technological changes and the new platforms for presenting contents. This is one of the permanent core themes of the CCCB’s programme and, in this vein, it has hosted some of the main festivals in the country as well as its own programme of events, including the Xcèntric film season, and Soy Cámara, a channel featuring audiovisual essays reflecting on some of contemporary society’s most pressing issues, including the way the internet operates as a place where images are produced and shared. L’Alternativa, the independent film festival D’A, Docs Barcelona, Miniput and OVNI were some of the seasons and festivals held in 2016. The range of events focuses on the world of experimental films that are not usually screened by commercial channels. It also looks at other phenomena, which would seem peripheral if we considered that these commercial channels were the centre of the universe, when they are, in some cases, extremely dynamic and foster emerging talent. This is the case with documentary cinema, animation, independent films, new proposals and new televisual or cinema formats from more far-off places. This year’s programme for the film festival L’Alternativa reflected on the relationship between the city and tourism and featured an opening talk by David Harvey. — Attracting a broader visitor base Throughout 2016, the CCCB made a special effort with its programme of events which were extremely well received by its visitors, most of whom came from Barcelona and its metropolitan area in addition to the rest of . There were particularly high visitor numbers from the 20 to 40 age group. Many of them were regular visitors who had already taken part in other activities at the CCCB, and had gone through higher education. The aim of the CCCB was to expand its visitor base to age groups and people from regions and social backgrounds who hadn’t visited in sufficiently high numbers. In this regard, the shared initiative with the Macba, Room 1418, aimed to attract and foster loyalty among young people aged 14 to 18 by getting them to join in the activities at the CCCB. Specific programmes were particularly important in this regard, such as the coproductions with the Grec Festival –Li diuen mar, Tata Mala, Port Arthur and Claudia–, festivals like Emergència, The Influencers and Lapsus, or the activities at the Beta Station for the exhibition “Human +,” where it was possible to more accurately monitor visitor numbers. The data gathered showed that there were a greater number of younger visitors aged under 40. Nevertheless, increased efforts must be made to attract new visitors, without us having to eschew our hallmarks of innovation and cultural exigency that have defined the CCCB since it was founded. 13

Internships at the CCCB The CCCB has entered into an agreement with the Casal dels Infants in the Raval to run internships at the CCCB’s maintenance service as part of the Initial Professional Qualification (PQPI) programme. In addition to this, if the student completes his or her internship successfully, they will be entitled to a paid scholarship to cover the cost of enrolment fees and textbooks, so that they can continue their formal training and have their first experience in the workplace. Since the year 2014, we have had the same number of student interns as recipients of the scholarship for the maintenance department. The objective is to ensure every intern will be entitled to the scholarship.

Culturnautes scholarships From 27th June to 29th July, the CCCB hosted its summer camp, Culturnautes, a space designed to foster children’s ability to explore, discover and arouse the curiosity of each participant. An inclusive activity that honoured the CCCB’s responsibility to provide a place where everyone has access to education through a cultural experience. “la Caixa” community projects awarded 35 scholarships to children and young people from the Raval so that they could enjoy this activity which is approved by Barcelona City Council. 32 Audience
