Christmas Wreath Meaning and Symbolism —submitted by Dave Gehris Each part of the Christmas wreath has a meaning in keeping with the season. Each symbol recognizes a part of the Christian belief system. THE CIRCLE Traditional wreaths are in the form of a circle. This circle has numerous meanings, both to Christians and non-Christians alike: • The eternal presence of God, with no beginning and no end • The cycle of the seasons, from spring to winter and eventually to spring again • The hope of life renewing itself • The hope of eternal life through Christ the Savior • The unending love of God MATERIALS IN THE WREATH Issue 20: December 19, 2018 The early wreaths were made out of several evergreen materials. The evergreens in UPCOMING PROGRAMS & EVENTS general represent continuity and survival through difficult times. Each evergreen Dec 19: Year end review and planning used, however, also has a meaning: session; board meeting follows • Holly represents the crown of thorns that Christ wore at the Crucifixion • Pine, holly and yew symbolize eternal life Dec 21: DCO Meeting: Our Lady • Cedar stands for healing Of Lourdes School Show Choir and • Laurel represents the conquest over pain and suffering Strings of Joy; DGC; 7am-8:30am, • Pine cones, seeds and nuts represent birth and rebirth $10pp COLORS Dec 24: Random Acts of Flowers The traditional Christmas colors of red and green also have symbolic meaning. Green Holiday Flower and Poinsettia represents the life and growth. For Christians it stands for the eternal life of the soul. Delivery 9:30 am. Red signifies the blood Christ shed on the cross. Announcements: Robin Kocher announced that the 3-CLUB HOLIDAY PARTY will be held at the Dunedin Golf Club on December 18th. Cocktails at 6 pm and dinner at 7 pm, price is $45. Shelly Beach reminded the Club about the HOLIDAY PARTY POTLUCK AND WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE this Friday, December 12th at her house. The 3 Dunedin Clubs’ CASINO NIGHT FUNDRAISER will be February 16th at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Sponsors are needed as are Silent Auction items. While attending the recent Rotary Foundation Banquet, WELCH AGNEW, picked up the following awards: Rotary International Polio Plus Club Award and the Presidential 2017-18 Making a Difference Award. Ron is home for a brief period of time before heading to Flamingo Bay to captain a boat. DAVE GEHRIS is happy to be here to say hello to old friends. JOANNE ROONEY is happy to see her good friend, Dave. PAM ORA shared news about former club member, Bruce Livingston. He was recently honored as a Lightning Community Hero. He was presented with a $50,000 grant to benefit the charity of his choice—Bruce chose the Clearwater Free Clinic. MIKE CHAPMAN commented he had recently visited the WWII museum with his family and commented on what a fine and moving museum it is. Then he shared that his son (who is an active Marine) called recently from Dubai. He told Mike he was going snow skiing after the call. When Mike asked his son where he would be snow skiing near Dubai, his son explained it would be in a large shopping mall in Dubai that had ski slopes! DR PAT SNAIR is happy she survived her recent visit to New Orleans. She has also visited the WWII museum. Dr. Pat also shared with the club that Dave Worobec and his wife had a healthy little boy on Dec. 8th. David John Worobec II will be called DJ. He is 9 lbs 15 oz and is 22 ¼ inches long!
