CAMP HAPPY DAYS ANNUAL REPORT | OCTOBER 1ST, 2015 - SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2016 Leadership LEADERSHIP

A Message from our Chair of the Board

Living By Our Gratitude

It is with deepest gratitude and a full heart that I sit down to write this letter for our annual report. My gratitude is for the opportunity to be part of such an incredible organization, for the many generous individuals who make our mission come to life, for the responsiveness and consideration of our community which has supported Camp Happy Days, and for the incredibly hard working staff and board members who labor tirelessly on behalf of kids with cancer in SC. Ours is a labor of love – for the children we serve and their families – delivering joy, friendship, hope, assistance, support, memories, and healing.

In the words of the late, great John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” Camp Happy Days has continued our forward progress, and indeed, exceeded our goals in many areas this year. Each day, we strive to live by our appreciation of our supporters by being humble stewards of our many gifts. We strive every day to do more with our resources, serve more families, and create more unforgettable moments for children battling cancer throughout SC. So in addition to our uttered words of thanks, we are pleased to show you how we have lived by the promise of your support. We offered 50 programs throughout the year to 1,168 children with cancer and their siblings, ages 4-18.

We have served 55 new families this year within Greenville, Columbia, Santee, Beaufort and Myrtle Beach counties. We gave $19,129 in family assistance to families in need of immediate financial support.

We made holiday dreams come true by providing gifts for 172 children with cancer and their siblings.

We served 261 kids at our flagship camp, exceeding last year’s numbers by 38 and including some exciting new programs like an indoor ice rink, wacky water world, and a 40ft water slide.

We respectfully thank our supporters for all that you do to help Camp Happy Days deliver on our mission to “offer support and encouragement to children diagnosed with cancer and their families by providing cost free year-round programs, special events and access to crisis resources. Our goal is to improve the physical, emotional and psychological health of the entire family facing pediatric cancer.”

We simply could not do it without you.

With Deepest Gratitude, Courtney duBois Brady

CAMP HAPPY DAYS ANNUAL REPORT | OCTOBER 1ST, 2015 - SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2016 05 Donor Spotlights PARTNERSHIPS Chip Roberts

Kickin’ Chicken Inc. Chip has been a long time board member. He is a generous donor and sponsor for the Gala, Holiday Giving and special projects. His partners, Bobby Perry and David Miller, and staff at Kickin’ Chicken are incredible volunteers and supporters.

There is nothing like seeing the joy and excitement on the kids faces, during any event, especially at camp, when they are able to forget their troubles and embrace moments of just being normal kids. All of them are truly courageous and heroic in their fight, and maintain tremendous positive attitudes while doing so. Camp Happy Days is a worthy cause of assisting the families affected by pediatric cancer.

Peter and Anna Stonefield APECS Aerospace Corporation Peter is a board member and has been a wonderful sponsor for our Gala & Cabooty Party, Bed Race and Corks for Kids. He and Anna are so supportive of our programs and events.

We have been blessed with three healthy boys and we feel it is important to give back to the community. Camp Happy Days hit a chord in my heart when I first met them and here we are.

06 CAMP HAPPY DAYS ANNUAL REPORT | OCTOBER 1ST, 2015 - SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2016 PARTNERSHIPS Jamie Westendorff

Dr. Madelene and Dr. Dan Lewis Britton and Asher Lewis

Charleston Outdoor Catering Jamie (also known as “Rooster”) has been on our board for 25 plus years and has been an incredible volunteer, donor and supporter! He is the chef at Camp, Family Weekend, the Happy Campers Club, the Holiday Parade, the Family Reunion and Volunteer Appreciation dinner and so much more!

I give because my father and grandfather were philanthropists and even though they didn’t have a lot, they were rich in good spirit from giving. I figured I could benefit from that too.

MUSC Department of Radiology Madelene has been a board member for five years years and has chaired our Development Committee very successfully and chaired and co-chaired the Gala – Cabooty Party for two years. She took our Gala to new levels of success. Her two sons Britton and Asher have been the youngest members of the Happy Campers Club which starts at $500 donations. They each have raised funds to belong in this giving club.

I initially became involved with Camp Happy Days because of their amazing work helping children diagnosed with cancer. I had no idea how personally rewarding my involvement would be for myself and my entire family. I will always remember my first trip to camp and seeing the profound impact my dollars and time were having on so many precious children. The kids were truly happy and having fun with other children facing similar challenges. I soon realized Camp Happy Days is so much more than just a camp. The services and support provided year round to these children and families is critical in their journey battling cancer. I cannot think of a more important cause or a better organization to give my time and money. I am proud to be a part of the Camp Happy Days family.

Dream Date: Danny Nicoll Myrtle Beach, SC Wednesday, November 16th Danny, Mom, Dad & Sister | 2 Staff & 2 Volunteers

Camp Happy Days is thankful that we had the pleasure to give Danny and his family a special Dream Date this fiscal year! A day celebrating Danny’s victory through his battle of cancer took place in Myrtle Beach, SC. This 10 year old boy has spent the last two and a half years battling Leukemia. The day started off right with a stretch Limo provided by Extreme Limo of Myrtle Beach to make the family feel super special. Mom, dad, Danny and his 7 year old sister got to enjoy the day doing activities that were all free to the family! This special Date started with lunch at Extreme Pizza, a visit to Ripley’s Aquarium, shopping at Toys & Co. and building a remote control car at RideMakerz, exploring at Wonder Works and ending the day at Hard Rock Cafe for dinner where we presented Danny with a PS4, which is what he was really wanting. To take it over the top we ended with a glow stick party in the Limo for the ride home. When the beautiful stretch Limo pulled up to their house Teresa and Amanda (two Camp Happy Days staff) said, “Yay! You are home from a fun day!” and both kids said, “Awh we don’t want this day to end.” The magic and wonder that goes into a Dream Date really does take away the everyday stress and worry of battling cancer. Thank you to everyone who made Danny’s Dream Date so special and giving his family hope as they spent the first year of their treatment feeling alone without much support before they were introduced to Camp Happy Days and the life changing support made possible by all of you! Together we change lives.

10 CAMP HAPPY DAYS ANNUAL REPORT | OCTOBER 1ST, 2015 - SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2016 Program Highlights PROGRAMS

Adela’s Extreme Teen Water Weekend Trashland Plantation, Wadmalaw Island Friday, May 20th – Sunday, May 22nd 11 teens battling cancer and 1 sibling | 3 new teens attended

Adela’s Extreme Teen Weekend was another great success this year! This event is always held a month before Camp. The weekend allows teens battling cancer to come together for a weekend full of excitement, deep conversation, and lots of fun! The weekend is designed to help teens gain confidence and self-empowerment through a weekend away from parents, the hospital, and their normal worries from cancer. This fiscal year’s event included a slip and slide, a floating island on the water, movies under the stars, and plenty of fun andgames. Three new teens recently diagnosed joined us for the weekend. It can be very difficult for teens especially recently diagnosed to feel comfortable showing up for a week of camp without knowing other campers. This weekend allows these teens to meet other campers that are going through similar battles and make these connections prior to attending Camp. Our favorite moment from Extreme Teen this summer was when a young teen showed up wearing her bandana as she was uncomfortable with her short hair due to chemo. It only took one evening around other teens and volunteers to make her have the confidence to wake up the next morning without her bandana on! We are so grateful to provide such an important program for our teenagers!

Family Weekend Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, NC April 1-3, 2016 30 families attended with 133 family members

This fiscal year, we were able to bring back Family Weekend. The weekend provides an invaluable opportunity for parents to connect with others, where they learn, share, and develop tools to cope with the stress and anxiety of their child’s diagnosis. Families participated in Movie night, Smores, Game Night, Rock Wall, Zipline, Leap of Faith, and many more fun activities as a family. Parents attended sessions including budgeting, estate planning, nutrition, self-care, and open discussions while the children attended zumba, cooking classes, and comic drawing. The weekend provides a vacation away from the stress of cancer and provides families with much needed family time that can be missed during hospital visits, treatments, and procedures.
