WORLD’S OLDEST CONTINUOUS HOCKEY RIVALRY - CARR-HARRIS CUP

The Carr-Harris Challenge Cup was initiated in 1986 by the International in celebration of the hockey rivalry between Queen’s and Royal Military College which dates back to 1886. The rivalry is the longest in the world on record. The Carr-Harris Challenge Cup trophy was donated by the Centennial Committee and features the “Lennie” sculpture by Kingston native Joan Belch. It depicts Lennox Irving, the Queen’s player who scored the lone goal in the March 10, 1886 inaugural game between RMC and Queen’s. The trophy is named in honour of the Carr-Harris family, which has a long-standing connection with both Kingston universities. In addition to the Carr-Harris Trophy, the top player from each team is awarded the Mary Carr-Harris Most Valuable Player Award. This award is in memory of Mary Carr-Harris, the matriarch of the Carr-Harris family, who up until her passing in 2006 annually presented ‘Lennie’ to each year’s winning team.

QUEEN’S HOCKEY LEGACY GEORGE RICHARDSON Richardson Stadium at Queen's University’s west campus is named after the late George Richardson. It is home to the Queen’s football Gaels - Richardson played some football, but built his reputation as a hockey player.

Born on Sept. 14, 1886, Richardson was a gifted athlete and excellent hockey player. In 1903, when he was just 16, he joined Queen's University's hockey team and played for the Intercollegiate Hockey Union championship teams of 1904 and 1906. Queen’s beat McGill 13-3 in the 1906 final, with Richardson scoring five goals. That same season Queen’s would challenge for the Stanley Cup and Richardson scored three goals in the two-game series they lost to the legendary Ottawa Silver Seven.

His playing career ended in 1912 and he worked in the family business and served on the executive of the Kingston Junior Frontenacs.

On the morning of Aug. 4, 1914, Richardson heard England had declared war on . His reaction was immediate: "That means me." Less than a week later Richardson was among the first group of volunteers from Kingston to join the British war effort. After intensive training, he was sent overseas as a company commander. Of his war service it was said that "no braver or more considerate officer ever held His Majesty's commission."

Indeed, not satisfied with the quality of the boots supplied to the men under his command, Richardson journeyed to England and bought 300 pairs of new boots for them. Later, when German mustard gas attacks had begun and his troops had no protection against the deadly substance, he returned to England and obtained gas masks that had recently been invented by an English firm. He paid for both of these purchases out of his own pocket.

On the night of Feb. 9, 1916, Richardson was leading a patrol that was spotted by German forces that opened fire. The patrol was almost wiped out. Rich- ardson, though severely wounded, made it back to the British trenches but died of his wounds the following morning. He was twenty-nine years old.

The Queen's Journal declared of Richardson: "No man at college was so widely known and so thoroughly liked. Not only was he the best player in hockey and football on teams which brought home intercollegiate championships, but his reputation for clean and true sportsmanship became a tradition". The Toronto Telegram called him “a hero in sport and war.”

It took over three decades to be recognized, but in 1950, Richardson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. JOHN “JOCK” HARTY John Joseph Harty, more commonly known as Jock Harty, was born in Kingston in 1874.

As a young man, Harty attended Kingston Collegiate and then Loyola College of Collège Ste-Marie in Montreal. He developed a love of hockey while play- ing for the Loyola team in Montreal, something that would stay with him the rest of his life. He returned to his hometown to study medicine at Queen’s and with him he brought a faster version of hockey that he had learned to play in Montreal.

In 1896, he scored six goals to lead Queen’s to a victory in the Ontario Hockey Association Championship against Stratford. The third verse of the Oil Thigh is now mostly unknown to students, but it urges them to “remember Captain Curtis and the Conquerors of Yale,” referring to the 1897 victory over Yale in New York City. Jock Harty was part of that team.

After graduating from Queen’s in 1897, Harty did a medical internship in New York. While he was there, he played for the New York Crescents.

Eventually he returned to Kingston to take up a job with the Canadian Locomotive Company (CLC), of which he would become President.

Jock Harty maintained his link with Queen’s and with hockey by coaching. He coached the CLC company team and the Queen’s team as well, leading the Queen’s team to a victory in the Allan Cup over Ottawa in 1909.

Sadly, Jock Harty died while on a business trip in England. He contracted the Spanish flu and died of septic pneumonia on February 23, 1919 at London’s Savoy Hotel.

In his memory, the Jock Harty Arena was built in 1922, with the money for its construction being largely supplied by friends, family, and classmates.

UNIVERSITY CUP

The University Cup is awarded annually to the Canadian U SPORTS Hockey Champions. The trophy was presented by Queen’s University of Kingston and the Royal Military College of Canada in 1962. Both teams participated in the first organized interuniversity hockey game played in Kingston in 1885. The Trophy was presented in recognition of the contribution made to the game of hockey by outstanding university players. Today, the University Cup is an annual tournament held in the spring with representative teams from each region across Canada. The first two University Cup’s were hosted in Kingston, Ontario. Queen’s has yet to win the University Cup and have made the championship twice prior to 2019.

QUEEN’S CUP The Ontario University Athletics conference Men’s Hockey Champions receive the Queen’s Cup, first presented in 1903 by Queen’s University. The Queen’s Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the champion in men’s of the Ontario University Athletics conference of U SPORTS. It has been awarded since 1903 to the champion between Ontario and universities. 2011 has marked the 100th time the Cup had been played. It is the second-oldest ice hockey trophy still being awarded, after the Stanley Cup. For the 1902–03 season, McGill University, Queen’s University and the University of Toronto founded the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union. The Queen’s Cup, emblematic of the CIHU championship was donated by Queen’s University of Kingston, Ontario. The Queen’s Cup was not presented during the war years of 1915-16, 1916–17, 1917–18, 1918–19, 1940–41, 1941–42, 1942–43, 1943-44. 1944-45. The first winner other than the founders was the Université de Montréal in 1949. By the 1960s, other universities, including Ontario Agricultural College (Guelph), McMaster, Waterloo and Western were granted membership and became eligible to win the Cup. Other universities have since joined the CIHU, now known as the OUA conference. The original Cup was retired in 2000 to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

ALLAN CUP The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men’s ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montague Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The Allan Cup was donated in early 1909 by Montreal businessman and Montreal Amateur Athletic Association president Sir H. Montagu Allan to be presented to the amateur champions of Canada. It was to be ruled like the Stanley Cup had, passed by champion to champion by league championship or challenge. Three trustees were named to administer the trophy: Sir Edward Clouston, President of the , Dr. H. B. Yates of McGill University, (donor of the to the Intercollegiate in 1898) and Graham Drinkwater, four-time Stanley Cup champion. The trophy was originally presented to the Victoria Hockey Club of Montreal, members of the IPAHU, to award to the champions of the IPAHU. The first IPAHU champion, and by extension, first winner of the Cup was the Ottawa Cliffsides hockey club. After the season, the Cliffsides were defeated in the first-ever challenge by the Queen’s University hockey club of Kingston, Ontario. Queen’s successfully defended challenges to the title in 1910 defeating the McGill Redmen 7-2 and winning 6-3 against the Ottawa Cliffsides. The Toronto St. Michael’s Majors claimed the title form Queen’s with a 5-4 victory in 1910.

STANLEY CUP (CHALLENGE ERA) In 1892 Lord Stanley of Preston, Queen Victoria’s appointed Governor General of Canada, donated a silver punch bowl worth about $50 that would be called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. The trophy, soon and forever dubbed The Stanley Cup, was to be awarded to the top amateur hockey team in Canada, with challenge matches determining the champions. 1895: The Stanley Cup stayed in Montreal in 1895, but it was Victorias who won as they posted a better record than the Montreal AAA. Yet they almost lost the title as Cup trustees had already accepted a challenge from Queen’s University to play the AAA for the Stanley Cup. It was decided that if Queen’s won, they would be named Stanley Cup champions, but if the AAA won, the Vics would keep the Cup. The AAA defeated Queen’s 5-1 at Montreal’s Victoria Rink on March 9th, 1895. Queen’s had three disallowed goals due to confusion over the differing provincial off-side rules. 1899: Two weeks after the defeated in their two- game total goals series, they lost the 1899 CAHL title, and thus the Cup, to the . The Shamrocks compiled a 7–1 season record while the Victorias finished one game back at 6–2. The Shamrocks then played a challenge game against Queen’s University on March 14, defeating them 6–2. 1906: For the 1905–06 season, the Ottawa HC (aka Silver Seven) joined the new Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA). In February, Ottawa played a best-of-three challenge series against OHA champion Queen’s University, but the Senators proved to be the better team as they swept the series with 16–7 and 12–7 victories.
