Strategically located on the East Coast, the Port is endowed with deep water basins, naturally protected to provide tranquil water frontage to accommodate large size ships. The Port has two harbour basins namely the inner harbour and the outer harbour. At present, the inner harbour channel and turning circle can cater to 12.5m draft vessels. To meet the dynamic changing needs of cargo carriers, the port is making relentless efforts to augment its infrastructure facilities. As a part of this endeavour, the inner harbour turning circle and entrance channel are being deepened to cater to fully laden panamax vessels of 14.0 m draft.

And two shelters in Visakha ! Have come a long way within these few years which seem just yesterday. Every day is a day a full of challenge and hope. 2011-2012 will go towards our efforts to the opening of our second shelter known as Kindness Farm of 8 acres. We acknowledge our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Phill Wollen our Chief Patron and Founder, The Winsome Constance Kindness Trust, The Dr. & Mrs. S. H. M. Modi Hormous House Benevolence Trust Fund , Ms. Olive Walker, Ms. Jane Courtney, Help Animals India, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi for making this possible. The animals for now horses and cattle are moving into here and more would follow easing the situation at our overcrowded first shelter. We hope to save and protect animals in this shelter though there is lot of developmental works to follow. And hoping we will be able to raise much needed funds at this new Kindness Shelter and able to help the animals in distress. Apart from this stupendous effort we have been able to focus our efforts on rescuing under difficult projects. We hope to do much better in the ensuing year as we face the daunting reality of severe financial shortage to meet our daily essential needs. We wish to thank you all for supporting us and we hope you will extend your benevolence for 2012-2013 We thank each and every donor, individuals, and organizations from India and abroad for their contribution to support us thereby reaching the many hundreds of distressed animals and making a definite difference.

Patnaik Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam– 530003, India *[E-mail: [email protected]] Received 20 August 2010; revised 21 December 2010 Wave energy distribution along Gangavaram, east coast of India has been carried out for the predominant waves representing southwest monsoon (June-September), northeast monsoon (October-February) and storm period (March-May and October) using a wave refraction model. Model computes refraction coefficient, shoaling coefficient, breaker heights and breaker energies along the coast. During all seasons, higher wave energy pattern is observed in the region to the south of the port but towards north, complex wave conditions exist due to rocky headlands and promontories and as a result wave breaking transpires at deeper depths. Low wave energy conditions are observed very near to north breakwater during all the seasons and even during storms. During storm conditions wave energies amplify along the coast. South breakwater of the port is under the region of convergence during southwest monsoon and for the storms approaching in south-south-east direction. Numerical wave refraction studies facilitate the coastal engineers and scientists to understand the coastal processes.
