CALENDARS! HAPPY NEW YEAR !! t Jan 2015 For me, the past month or so at BYSC has just seemed to by. So much activity - so much fun to be had. In particular, the oyster ‘cooking class’ was a hit, the Christ- Jan 7th– Book Club mas Party was really well attended, and the Junior Sailing of Beaufort Oyster Roast fund raiser was a great success Jan 8th-Fishing Club – thanks to all of the many volunteers who made it all happen. Jan 9th-Sunset Friday And now, though the Holidays are behind us, there is so much yet on the calendar for the next several weeks. Jan 10th– Tequila When you read through this issue of the Bow Watch, or if Tasting you go to the club web site, you will see there are a lot of activities scheduled at the club during this ‘slow’ season. Jan 11th-Rules and I have said it before and will say it again here, it really is Tactics Seminar NOT too cold to enjoy the water or to play some tennis – or to volunteer for a work day or club project. The river Jan 13th-BYSC Board is generally not quite as busy during the winter months, which makes it even more enjoyable for those who do choose to get out and go boating/sailing/fishing/kayaking/rowing/SUP’ing. On shore, Sunset and Jan 14th– Steak Night ‘Finally’ Fridays continue, Steak Night, sailing seminars, and a couple of ‘food and beverage’ activities. Also, we can all look forward to some ‘work days’ being added to the calendar as we have several projects in Jan 16th-Sunset Friday progress or about to kick off. So, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate.

Jan 17th-Private Rental 2014 was another year of growth in membership for BYSC and, as a result, there are a lot of new faces among us. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the many new members to the club. And, as I almost always do in these letters, I encourage everyone, old and new members, to participate in a variety Jan 23rd– Sunset Friday of the activities, events and informal gatherings that are ongoing throughout the year at our club – come on out, meet people, get involved, you will have a good time. Jan 28th– Shrimp Gravy Night It is your club, come enjoy it.

BYSC Tequila Tasting January 10, 2014; 6:00 PM To include: A brief presentation on the origins, production, regulation, etc. of tequila – (more details than you ever really wanted to know), A ‘warm-up’ tasting ‘across types’ of one brand of tequila selected by the coordinators – (you will learn the 3 ‘types’ of tequila in the presentation), A bit of ‘Mexican’ cuisine – Enchiladas (along with appetizers and sides contributed by the participants), The tasting and judging of the tequilas – each participant will enjoy a taste of at least 5 or 6 different tequila brands, And then, more tasting– free style – maybe even a few mixed drinks ????? The basics of how it works. Sounds confusing, but it really isn’t. It is a ‘blind’ tasting in that the tequilas will be poured one at a time by the ‘coordinators’, out of site of the tasters, so that the tasters will not know which tequila they are tasting. After all tequilas are tasted and discussed, the tasters will ‘vote’ for their favorites. The ‘coordinators’ will tally the votes and determine the winners. If there are enough participants, they will be divided among multiple tables and the winning tequila from each table will advance to a championship ‘taste off’. The cost of entry and some details ? (Glad you asked) Each “participant” brings a bottle of tequila to enter in the tasting – it will be partially consumed, but you keep the remainder. A “participant” can be an individual or a couple. This tasting will be limited to “100% Agave - Reposado” tequilas – ask one of the coordinators to explain and see the next bullet). To assure there is no duplication of brands, your tequila selection must be ‘checked off’ through the tequila coordi- nator (call or text before you purchase).

Those participants who are willing, please bring a ‘Mexican’ side dish or appetizer to share (please contact the food coordinator to assure a diversity of delights) ********** PARTICIPATION IS LIMITED ********** to reserve your spot contact either of the coordinators listed below (not the club office). Deadline - when all seats are spoken for or Thursday January 8 @ 9:00 PM, whichever occurs first. Coordinators : Tequila - CHUCK RUSHING (843.368.0317 – [email protected]) Food - KRISTI RUSHING (843.450.4288 – [email protected])

One of the best things about winter time in the Sea Islands is winter time food. Last month we had oysters with Sean-O and it was a lot of fun, this month I’ll be whipping up my favorite cold weather meal, Shrimp Gravy, and I would love to show folks how. We can do it together from start to finish and then eat a bunch of it. The Webb way to cook it is neither fancy nor difficult, or we probably wouldn't make it. It just takes time, PBR, and someone to peel the shrimp.

Jan 28th at BYSC Starting at 5 PM, Cost is $10 per person. Please RSVP via email or call the office. BYOB. Kids are welcome. Come ready to peel shrimp, chop onions and peppers and stir the pot.

RULES AND TACTICS SEMINAR, Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, 1pm. Our first big event of the year will be the Rules and Tactics Seminar. Wayne Bretsch, BYSC member and National Race Officer, will explain certain racing rules and John Potter, (you have heard of him), will tell us how the particular rule affects the racing tactics. This should be an interesting discussion as it was last year. Juniors should attend since you are getting more and more into close rule situations and should clearly know what your rights and obligations are.

Junior Sailing

The final weekend of the Fall sailing season was very busy & successful for Beaufort High Sailing. Walter Gnann, Alexander Mazzeo and Christopher Hoogenboom finished 12th in the Gold Fleet out of 40 schools at the Great Oaks Invitational in New Orleans. Beaufort High earned one of 5 spots awarded to schools in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina & Tennessee. The Great Oaks is a Na- tional Championship for developing teams. This year's competition included teams as far away as Or- egon. On the same weekend Beaufort High sailors Alex Angus, Sam Exley, Jacob Lawson and Quinten Pa- ton-Melland finished 2nd overall out of 15 Varsity Schools at the SAISA North Points Regatta in Sun- bury, Ga. At the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club Change of Watch in November, Beaufort High Sailing was awarded the Mills Kinghorn Award for Sailing Excellence. You have probably received your BYSC dues statement by now. But, did you notice the box at the bot- tom of the page that explains how you can renew your membership in US Sailing (USS), or join, through the BYSC link. You receive a discount on your USS dues as well as providing a credit to BYSC.

Go to www.ussailingmvp.com/bysc. This will link you up directly with USS, bypassing the BYSC office but crediting the club for a membership.

There have been a number of comments from BYSC members that they were inter- ested in learning how to sail. Junior Sailing of Beaufort, Inc. puts on the popular Learn to Sail program in June for juniors but there has not been a major organized program for teaching adults.

We are exploring the idea of putting together a sailing instruction program at BYSC that would occur in the spring and fall but first we need some idea of the level of inter- est. If you think that you would be interested please reply to this e-mail and let me know your interest and the general level of sailing experience.

The initial idea is to have a USS certified instructor teach beginning sailing in club . It seems that 12-16 hours of indoctrination and training would be suitable for folks to feel confident in sailing a small boat in the Beaufort River. The 12-16 hours would probably be over a four day period, such as: 2 hrs on a Thurs. and Fri. night for on-shore indoctrination and parts of Sat. and Sun. for on-the-water training. There would be a cost but it has not been determined yet and is somewhat dependent on the level of interest.

A quick response would be appreciated.

Thank you and Happy New Year.

Frank Pontious RULES AND TACTICS SEMINAR

Sunday, January 11, 1pm

Wayne Bretsch, National Race Officer, will present certain racing rules for discussion.

John Potter will bring his many racing experiences to the table to explain how the various rules come into play on the race course.

This was an excellent learning experience last year when we had the same type seminar.

Juniors are encouraged to participate.

Please give me a heads-up if you are planning on attending so that we can prepare.

Thanks.

New Year’s Eve JY15 Round Robin

Nine hardy souls gathered in spite of 50-degree weather to deter- mine the best BYSC JY15 sailor of the Year. The participants includ- ed Everett Ballenger, Walter Gnann with crew Thomas, Paul Keyser- ling, Andrew Nichols with crew Kate, Woody Norwood, Frank Pon- tious, and Gordon Sproul. After four or five short, but spirited races it was obvious the Walter Gnann with younger brother Thomas as crew would be the winner as he won every one except one. Three more races were needed to establish the order of the other sailors. Frank Pontious 2nd, with Woody Norwood 3rd, followed closely by Paul K. and Gordon S.

A special thank is due to Marvin Day, David Dixon, and Mr. Chuck for the many hours they spend preparing and tuning the Club’s six for the event.

The support staff included Charlie Keith and Marvin Day man- ning the /safety boat and George Dewhirst and Ray Gallagher on the signal boat. It was a great day and all who attended had a good time.
