Tony in the Workshops Outstanding Contribution Award and freelancer Subitha in the Championing Diversity Award. Well done! BDAA Dementia Sessions have been well received. We have run two further workshops this autumn for people Bristol Gold working with people living with Dementia. We’ve received tremendous feedback Star Awards and are already planning some more workshops next year. Watch this space! We’re very pleased to announce that Tony, our BDAA Chair, has been awarded with the Gold Star Carer award for the Bristol Gold Star Awards. The Bristol Gold Star Awards is an accreditation for recognising local heroes across the South West, it is officially the longest running awards of its kind in the region. In November we celebrated our 4th Birthday We had a fantastic evening on 30th September in Christ Church Clifton with many with a cake made by Tina Smith Blackwill wonderful speakers. Tony interviewed our guests on comfy chairs for an informative and generously donated to us by Carolyn and informal discussion on the great work happening in Bristol to raise Dementia from the Good Care Group. We received a fantastic £411.15. Jo generously spent the day before baking cakes to sell as slices plus made a Death by Chocolate cake to raffle. Thanks also to Sam for baking cakes and Adam and Fiona of Wiltshire Farm Foods for donating cakes. We were delighted to receive a wonderful grant from The Transformation Fund which will help us become more sustainable and to grow. This past year we have received a wonderful £4,876.37 from Co-op towards Subitha Shares our work. We are delighted to be supported by the Co-op again. One group member generously membership.coop.co.uk/causes/38589 interpreted for me. There were many questions asked including how Dementia differs from natural ageing and if there are any cures. I learned a lot from our conversations. Thank you to trustees Sabina Zillul and Asma Qadar for organising this session with me. Dementia diagnosis rates in Bangladesh communities in both Bristol and England have been low so it’s vital to improve Dementia awareness through this kind of partnership working. Shiv Sama at the Bristol Hindu Temple. Shiv is Chair of Avon Indian Community Association, affiliated with the Hindu Temple. Subitha has worked with their Over 50s Group, running two Dementia Awareness sessions. The festival of Diwali was celebrated by Bristol residents of Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths on 27th October. For Hindus, one of the reasons to celebrate is to remember the tale of regal, courageous couple Rama and Sita defeating Diary Dates the evil Ravanna. Sikhs remember the just release from January unfair imprisonment of their sixth guru- Guru Hargobind- along with 52 other princes. Jains observe the final 3rd Happy Days Panto nirvana of Mahavira, the reformer of Jainism. In Bristol, 7th Carers Training the Hindu temple and 4 Sikh gurdwaras were busy with extra opportunities to come together, worship and enjoy 22nd St Werburgh’s Foodbank Dementia traditional food. There were also Diwali events at local Friends Session community venues. 23rd St Peter’s Hospice Dementia Friends Session We give thanks to our partners- such as Avon Indian Community Association and the Sikh Resource Centre- for helping us increase understanding of Dementia and improve Dementia 27th Zion Bristol – Dementia workshop inclusion, particularly in local Hindu and Sikh faith communities. This has been possible through our recent faith-based project funded by Bristol Community Health, put into action February by Subitha Baghirathan (freelancer for BDAA). The funding for this has now ended but we 7th Happy Days Memory Cafe aim to work in different ways with Bristol’s diverse communities in 2020 and onwards.
