Gygax lays out the essence of role-playing games in that single table. He provides methods of producing flowcharts (the random dungeon generator) and fills each node with an encounter: Empty rooms, monsters, traps, treasure and “special”. This system maps to any role playing game since. There is a scene: either nothing happens, you have an antagonist, you deal with a threat, or you receive a reward. There are a selection of options of which scene to reach next (often depending on the events in the first scene). One is selected, you move onto the next scene (room) and repeat the process again. What a wonderful concept! Brilliant in the way it cuts right to the heart of what makes a role-playing game fun. Immediately after (or before in the case of the Monster Manual) and in the years following several of these items were given great support. Across the various iterations of Dungeons and Dragons there are literally thousands of monsters and dozens of books and tables devoted to traps. But what about the other 70% of the table? Here, this question is applied to a relatively novel context: that of online gold farming, a gray-market industry in which wage-earning workers, largely based in China, are paid to play fantasy massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) that reward them with virtual items that their employers sell for profit to the same games' casual players. -

The emergence of Permadeath games in recent months has exposed the mainstream gaming population to the concept of the permanent death of the game avatar, a notion that has been vehemently avoided by game developers in the past. The paper discusses the many incarnations of Permadeath that have been implemented since the dawn of video games, and uses examples to illustrate how gamers are crying out for games to challenge them in a unique way. The aims of this are to highlight the potential that Permadeath has in the gaming world to become a genre by itself, as well as to give insights into the ways in which gamers play Permadeath games at the present. To carry out this research, the paper examines the motivation players have to play games from a theoretical standpoint, and investigates how the possibilty of failure in video games should not be something gamers stay away from. -

One of the most popular and successful sports of today’s culture is American football. This sport has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, and like the video game industry, has become a multi-billion entity. It was only a matter of time until game developers teamed up with the National Football League (NFL) to bring magnificent sport to video game players across the globe. There are few, if any, game genres that are as popular as sports games. With the ever-increasing popularity of the NFL, it was inevitable that football games would become one of the most lucrative of the sports game genre. With all of the companies making football games for consoles and PCs during the late 1980s and 1990s, there is one particular company that clearly stood and remains above the rest, Electronic Arts. EA Sports, the sports division of Electronic Arts, revolutionized not only the football sports games but also the entire sports game genre itself. Before Electronic Arts entered the sports realm, league licenses, celebrity endorsements, and re-release of games were all unheard of. EA was one of the first companies to release the same game annually, creating several series of games that are thriving even today. -

Press Start Non-Serious Serious Games Non-Serious Serious Games Matthew Hudson Toshiba Design Center Abstract Serious games have been shown to promote behavioural change and impart skills to players, and non-serious games have proven to have numerous benefits. This paper argues that non-serious digital games played in a ‘clan’ or online community setting can lead to similar real world benefits to serious games. This paper reports the outcomes from an ethnographic study and the analysis of user generated data from an online gaming clan. The outcomes support previous research which shows that non-serious games can be a setting for improved social well- being, second language learning, and self-esteem/confidence building. In addition this paper presents the novel results that play within online game communities can impart benefits to players, such as treating a fear of public speaking. This paper ultimately argues that communities of Gamers impart ‘serious’ benefits to their members. From above, from below: navigating the videogame A thesis presented by Daniel Golding 228306 to The School of Culture and Communication in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in the field of Cultural Studies in the School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Supervisor: Dr. Fran Martin October 2008 ABSTRACT The study of videogames is still evolving. While many theorists have accurately described aspects of the medium, this thesis seeks to move the study of videogames away from previously formal approaches and towards a holistic method of engagement with the experience of playing videogames. Therefore, I propose that videogames are best conceptualised as navigable, spatial texts. This approach, based on Michel de Certeau’s concept of strategies and tactics, illuminates both the textual structure of videogames and the immediate experience of playing them. I also regard videogame space as paramount. My close analysis of Portal (Valve Corporation, 2007) demonstrates that a designer can choose to communicate rules and fiction, and attempt to influence the behaviour of players through strategies of space. This type of modern competitive video gaming resembles the field of traditional sport in multiple ways, including players, leagues, tournaments and corporate sponsorship, etc. Nevertheless, academic discussion regarding the current treatment, benefit, and risk of eSport are still ongoing. This research project examined the status quo of the rising eSport field. Based on a detailed introduction of competitive video gaming history as well as an in-depth analysis of factors that constitute a sport, this study redefined eSport as a unique form of video game competition. From the theoretical perspective of uses and gratifications, this project focused on how eSport is similar to, or different from, traditional sports in terms of spectator motivations. The current study incorporated a number of previously validated-scales in sport literature and generated two surveys, and got 536 and 530 respondents respectively. This study then utilized the data and constructed the motivation scale for eSport spectatorship consumption (MSESC) through structural equation modeling.
