CLINE: Revolution and Reconciliation: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Protestantism, and the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-1970 (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) The Student Interracial Ministry (SIM) was a seminary-based, nationally influential Protestant civil rights organization based in the Social Gospel and Student Christian Movement traditions. This dissertation uses SIM’s history to explore the role of liberal Protestants in the popular revolutions of the 1960s. Entirely student-led and always ecumenical in scope, SIM began in 1960 with the tactic of placing black assistant pastors in white churches and whites in black churches with the goal of achieving racial reconciliation. In its later years, before it disbanded in mid-1968, SIM moved away from church structures, engaging directly in political and economic movements, inner-city ministry and development projects, and college and seminary teaching. In each of these areas, SIM participants attempted to live out German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exhortation to “bring the church into the world.” Revolution and Reconciliation demonstrates that the civil rights movement, in both its “classic” phase from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and its longer phase stretching over most of the twentieth century, was imbued with religious faith and its expression. -

CHARLES L. ADKINS - Died Monday, April 23, 2018 at his home in Bidwell, Ohio at the age of 73. The cause of death is unknown. He was born on March 11, 1945 in Vinton, Ohio to the late William Raymond and Mary (née Poynter) Adkins. Charles married Mildred Adkins June 23, 1976 in Columbus, Ohio, who also preceded him in death October 20, 2007. Charles retired from General Motors following thirty years employment. He served in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of Gallipolis VFW Post #4464; Gallipolis AMVETS Post #23; Gallipolis DAV Chapter #23; Vinton American Legion Post #161; life and a founding member of Springfield Volunteer Fire Department; life member of Vinton Volunteer Fire Department and a former chaplain and member Gallia County Sheriff’s Department. He attended several churches throughout Gallia County, Ohio. He was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America – Gallipolis Chapter #709. Those left behind to cherish his memory are two stepdaughters, Marcy Gregory, of Vinton, Ohio and Ramey (Bruce) Dray, of Gallipolis, Ohio; three stepsons, Sonny (Donna) Adkins, of Vinton, Ohio; Randy (Debbie) Adkins and Richard (Tonya) Adkins, both of Bidwell, Ohio; nine stepgrandchildren; eleven step-great- grandchildren, and; ten step-great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Paul (Martha) Adkins, of Bidwell, Ohio and Fred Adkins, of Columbus, Ohio, and; his sister-in-law, Ellen Adkins, of Dandridge, Tennessee. In addition to his parents and wife, Charles is preceded in death by his sisters Donna Jean Higginbotham and Cloda Dray; his brothers, Raymond, Billy and Ronnie Adkins; his step-grandson, Shawn Gregory and his son-in-law, Rod Gregory. -

Founded in 1975, NABJ represents the quintessential post-Civil Rights organization, in that it was established following the end of the struggle for freedom rights. This piece argues that NABJ, like many other advocacy organizations, has succumbed to incorporation. Once a fierce critic of institutional racism inside and outside the newsroom, NABJ has slowly narrowed its advocacy focus to the issue of newsroom diversity. In doing so, NABJ, this piece argues, has rendered itself useless to the larger black public sphere, serving only the needs of middle-class African Americans seeking jobs within the mainstream press. Moreover, as the organization has aged, NABJ has taken an increasing amount of money from the very news organizations it seeks to critique. Additionally, this study introduces a specific method of inquiry known as diagnostic journalism. Inspired in part by the television show, House MD, diagnostic journalism emphasizes historiography, participant observation and autoethnography in lieu of interviewing. -

“The Top Ten” Leaders of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom Biographical Information (Asa) Philip Randolph • Director of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. • He was born on April 15, 1889 in Crescent City, Florida. He was 74 years old at the time of the March. • As a young boy, he would recite sermons, imitating his father who was a minister. He was the valedictorian, the student with the highest rank, who spoke at his high school graduation. • He grew up during a time of intense violence and injustice against African Americans. • As a young man, he organized workers so that they could be treated more fairly, receiving better wages and better working conditions. He believed that black and white working people should join together to fight for better jobs and pay. • With his friend, Chandler Owen, he created The Messenger, a magazine for the black community. The articles expressed strong opinions, such as African Americans should not go to war if they have to be segregated in the military. • Randolph was asked to organize black workers for the Pullman Company, a railway company. He became head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first black labor union. Labor unions are organizations that fight for workers’ rights. Sleeping car porters were people who served food on trains, prepared beds, and attended train passengers. • He planned a large demonstration in 1941 that would bring 10,000 African Americans to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC to try to get better jobs and pay. The plan convinced President Roosevelt to take action. -

JACK WEINSTEIN: JUDICIAL STRATEGIST Jeffrey B. Morris* Fifty years ago, one of the great students of the judicial process, Walter F. Murphy,1 heir to Princeton University’s great tradition of such scholars,2 employed the papers of United States Supreme Court Justices to consider how any one of their number might go about ex- erting influence within and outside the Court. How, Murphy asked, could a justice most efficiently use her resources—official and per- sonal—to achieve a set of policy objectives?3 Murphy argued that there were strategic and tactical courses open for justices to increase their policy influence,4 and that a policy-oriented justice must be pre- pared to consider the relative costs and benefits that might result from her formal decisions and informal efforts at influence.5 There were, Murphy argued, a wide variety -

Remarks of Dean Richard L. Revesz at the Memorial Service for Dean Emeritus Norman Redlich June 13, 2011 Introduction Norman Redlich (LL.M. ’55) was my family’s dean. He was the dean who hired me in 1985 to join the NYU Law School faculty and during whose tenure I served for three years as a very junior faculty member. And for the last 9 years, I’ve been occupying an office that for years I had referred to as “Norman’s office.” Norman was also the dean when my wife Vicki Been ’83 was a law student. He was the dean who called her to his office to let her know in a stern but caring way that during her clerkship with Judge Edward Weinfeld ’21, perhaps the Law School’s most illustrious alumnus at the time, she would need to uphold the Law School’s reputation and honor. Law School Career Norman was an extraordinary dean. Much of the Law School’s current success can be traced to Norman’s visionary leadership. Norman served in the military during World War II. Then, after graduating from Williams College in 1947 and receiving his LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1950, Norman earned his LL.M. in taxation from NYU School of Law in 1955. He joined our faculty in 1960, received tenure in 1962, and became the Judge Edward Weinfeld Professor of Law in 1983. Norman was a prolific scholar in the areas of constitutional law and professional responsibility, and authored an influential casebook in each of these areas. -
