Short Term 12 Destin Cretton
Short Term 12 Destin Cretton Destin Cretton received one of the five Academy Nicholl Fellowships awarded in 2010 Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting 25 th Annual Competition www.oscars.org/nicholl www.facebook.com/nichollfellowships For additional information about the screenplay or the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, contact: [email protected] INT. GROUP HOME SAMMY'S ROOM -- EARLY MORNING A giant American flag hangs on the wall, along with some slightly inappropriate magazine cut-outs of scantily clad women. SAMMY, 14 and small for his age, kneels down in only his underwear, carefully drawing a target onto the inside of his window with a red marker. Satisfied, he stands and walks back to the opposing wall. He turns, stares at the target for a moment, then runs full speed toward the window, SLAMMING into it head-first and crumpling to the ground. Both hands go into the air with a victory holler. INT. GRACE'S APARTMENT BATHROOM -- EVENING Warm water shoots down from an aging shower head. GRACE PETERSON, 20s, sits on the bathtub floor, naked and beautiful, chin on her knees, surrounded by bouncing droplets. She stares down at her toes, picking at the corner of her thumb with her pointer finger, nervously, repeatedly, violently. She purses her lips and lets a glob of spit fall from her mouth to her feet. The water washes it away. INT. GRACE'S BEDROOM -- EARLY MORNING Grace sits in a soft chair with her wet hair wrapped in a towel and her legs tucked under her, early light glowing through the curtains. -

Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. Peep show owners, in fact, were very vocal in pressing Edison to devise a Film projection to large audiences was much more way to show life size images on arcade walls. This led to the Vitascope profitable than viewing through individual kiosks, since projection system, developed by Washington, DC inventor Thomas Armat, fewer machines were needed in proportion to the but then marketed by Edison's organization as if it were his own invention. number of viewers - Click to Play The first public Vitascope screening took place April 23, 1896 at Koster & Biel's Music Hall, a vaudeville house in New York's Herald Square at 34th Street near Broadway, the site today of Macy's. It would have premiered three days earlier, but it took longer than expected to install the machinery. That first night audience was dazzled by film images projected on a 20 foot canvas screen set within a gilded frame. -

Destin Daniel Cretton, director. Just Mercy. Warner Bros. Pictures, 2019. Just Mercy is the film adaption of a memoir by civil rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson, starring Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan. Dir- ected by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle, and co-written with Andrew Lanham, the film is based on Stevenson’s experiences as a young, black, Ivy League- educated attorney in rural Alabama during the 1980s and 90s fighting systemic racism and an abusive criminal justice system. This film is a social commentary on America’s failed judicial system that has disproportionately incarcerated African Amer- icans, perpetuating inequity in the black community. The film begins with Johnny D (Foxx), as he is stopped and surrounded by police while he drives home after a day of work. They are convinced that he is guilty of murdering a white woman and haul him off to jail. The following scene shows Stevenson (Jordan), a recent Harvard Law School graduate, arriving in Alabama. It becomes apparent that he is an activist and a lawyer specializing in death penalty appeals. Stevenson’s work highlights America’s biased judicial system in the deep South, where African Americans are unjustly prosecuted and poorly represented, resulting in many unfair convictions of innocent people. The level of systemic racism is profound in states such as Alabama, a former slave state and participant of Jim Crow laws. Arriving to meet his client, Stevenson is treated poorly by the prison guards who question his status as a lawyer. They demand that he is strip-searched before entering the facility, even though counselors are not subject to that type of protocol. -
