Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) The Impresario (Der Schauspieldirektor) K 486 The German singspiel was a popular genre at the end of the 18th century, offering competition for the Italian buffa. A comedy with music in one act, The Impresario was composed at the same time as and premiered in Vienna on 11 February 1786 with an original by Gottlieb Stephanie. The advent of a great masterpiece like Figaro a few months later has always overshadowed The Impresario and made it one of the least often performed of Mozart’s works. Although slight, in that it consists of an (and a delightful one it is!) plus four vocal numbers and a lot of spoken dialogue, it can be a fun with the text updated so as to be more suited to modern sensibilities with relevant contemporary cultural references. The plot concerns a theatre director and his actors performing plays about scheming and cheating lovers, as well as competing prima donna singers. Today’s performance is based on the English edition by G. Schirmer.
