THE

WILL TRIPLE IN SIZE BY 2024

A crucial boardmeeting with the SNCF Mobilités directors was held on the 9th of July 2018 at 9:00 am to negotiate an exclusive project with CEETRUS (Immochan), to support and accompany SNCF Gares & Connexions in its transformation of the Gare du Nord.

This internal decision stemmed from a long selection process initially launched in June 2017. The outcome of this exclusive negotiation, whose deadline is scheduled for the end of 2018, is to create a commonly-held corporation with 34% of shares owned by SNCF Gares & Connexions and 66% by CEETRUS, to carry out the extension of the largest European station and its commercial operations, for a duration of 35 to 46 years.

The gare du Nord will triple in size by 2024, just in time for 2024 Olympics, held in Paris. The architect Denis Valode will lead a huge transformation, as major as the operation conducted by the architect Hittorff in 1864.

The new departure terminal reinterprets the famous 19th century Haussmanian concept of the "passage parisien", a gallery 18 meters tall by 300 meters wide offering a vast array of railway, intermodal and commercial services. The focus of this project on every day buses and trains is as important as the pivotal role given to long distance trains.

The most symbolic transformation is the adaptation of the station to accommodate the modern evolution of sports activities, by proposing for the first time in a 1km track across Parisian roofs, alongside public cloakrooms and diverse sports facilities.

The new Gare du Nord will set an environment-friendly example, offering public green spaces and ecological energy production. The design, construction and exploitation of the station will respect strict environmental regulations and standards.

This ambitious project led by SNCF Gares & Connexions is structured in a innovative way, to ensure that the number one station in Europe will be open, functioning and ready to go for the 2024 Olympics!

Guillaume PEPY, President of SNCF: " This projects manifests a strong ambition for the Paris Gare du Nord. It has been long-awaited. The new Paris Gare du Nord, open to the public by mid-2023, will resemble in many ways St Pancreas station, based in London. The project involves many experts from the SNCF team and represents a major advancement for 700 000 daily commuters and high speed rail passengers transiting through the largest European train station”.

Patrick ROPERT, CEO of SNCF Gares & Connexions: "Each time we transform a train station, we transform part of a Parisian neighbourhood. Paris Gare du Nord will become the symbolic station of the 21st century, by making available a maximum number of services adapted to the needs of our society. Tripling the size of Gare du Nord station for the 2024 Olympics is a huge challenge which we are taking on with great determination and pride”.

Vinney MULLIEZ, President of Ceetrus : "We are thrilled to carry out this project alongside SNCF Gares & Connexions. It's a project that combines the high stakes of tomorrow's urban lifestyle: lively, animated areas for passenger flows that become true living spaces, the role of retail and its evolution, user needs, reconnecting with the city. The Gare du Nord project illustrates the commitment of Ceetrus and its ambition to become a global urban player, serving citizens and the cities of tomorrow while enhancing their daily lives."

Anne HIDALGO, Maire of Paris: "This ambitious reorgnization of the Gare du Nord, led by the SNCF Group with the support of the City of Paris, rises to meet a dual challenge: to better host visitors while simultaneously improving the quality of life of local Parisian residents. With its cultural and sports facilities, its co-working spaces, its shops and its green spaces, Paris Gare du Nord station will become a shared space with a bustling, lively community."

172 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATION

The first jetty was built in 1846, and was rapidly rebuilt by the achitect Jacques Ignace Hittorff and his team in 1864. More recent transformations were undertaken in 1981, to introduce the RER B line, and again in 1993 to accommodate the TGV and lines. The last crucial transformation took place in 2001, to expand and upgrade the vast departure hall. Anotherr huge leap forward will come with the renovation of Paris Gare du Nord station. The square footage of the station will triple, expanding from 36,000 to 110,000 square meters by 2024.

900 000 PASSENGERS PER DAY BY 2030

The Paris Gare du Nord is already the largest and most influential European train station, transporting 700 000 passengers per day in the station and countless more passengers

transiting through several metro lines. The exponential growth of passengers means that this station expects to accommodate more than 800 000 people per day in 2024, and 900 000 people by 2030.

This growth will be accompaned by the whole range of SNCF Mobilités transport activities. Long distance passenger growth on lines servicing the North of France is expected to reach +40% by 2030, stimulated by offers. The Eurostar business is expected to grow by nearly 50% during rush hour. By 2023,the extension of the RER E line to the West of Paris will also lead to a 50th growth in activity. And finally, the opoening of the Charles De Gaulle Express line linking the airport to the Gare de l'Est will contribute to reinforcing passenger traffic to the Gare du Nord.

This new step forward in transformation is vital in meeting the growth needs of rail transport, which will no doubt be further stimulated by the imminent market opening voted by the Parliament in June 2018.

A STATION ADAPTED TO TRAVELLERS' EXPECTATIONS

A massive new departure hall will be built to significantly enlarge the station. So arrival and departure flows in the station will be directed towards two different areas, enhancing the comfort and ease of passengers.

 Expansion of the Eurostar terminal will facilitate customs control, to meet the challenges of reinforced border controls due to Brexit.

 Circulation areas will be more than double, going from 15,000m2 to more than 37,000m2. The number one passenger requirement is to have enough space to easily move around, get to their train and have sufficient space in waiting areas.

 Reinforced accessibility with 2.5 times more elevators and escalators. The new Gare du Nord will offer 55 elevators and 105 escalators.

 Station safety features will be integrated into station design. Videosurveillance will be significantly reinforced.

REINVENTING CONNECTIONS TO THE CITY

 A new station façade will be built on Rue Faubourg Saint-Denis with direct access to the Departures terminal.

 The bus station will be redesigned. Today this station accommodates 12 bus lines and 7 night bus services. Tomorrow, this area will be directly connected to the Departures terminal to improve and enhance waiting for all RATP customers; project steering will be carried out by Ile de France Mobilités.

THE BIRTH OF A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

New shops and services will transform the lives of neighborhood residents, as well as passengers.

 Cultural activities for all. A European academy of culture - a concept imagined by writer Laurent Guez - will be rolled out across more than 2,000m2. Giant screens will showcase a Biennial celebation of the digital arts. A vast venue of more than 1,600m2 will be used for events and concerts.

5 500 square meters of coworking space, controlled by Wework

 A nursury with the association mom’artre and social activities linked to the insertion will have a place in this project.

 New restaurants will be put in place, occupying 27% of services spaces and shops. Gastronomic French food will be served on Parisian rooftops with a spectacular view of historic monuments and neighourhoods!

In total, these service spaces and shops will be largely expanded, going from 10 000square feet to 50 000 square feet.

A 1K RUNNING TRACK ON THE ROOF OF THE STATION

The SNCF is acknowledging and supporting the importance of urban sports, an activity which must be endorsed and encouraged in our daily lives.

A new 1 km track on the roofs of the Paris Gare du Nord will benefit many runners.

 A new sports facility, sport terrains, a basketball court, and a golf course will be open to.

 Lockers, changing rooms and showers will also be available.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY PROJECT

The new Paris Gare du Nord will offer 7 700 square feet of green spaces and 3 200 spaces of photovoltaïques panels. 4

 Levels 4 et 5 of the station will be built in wood.

 The construction and exploitation of this new station will respect les rules and regulations set up by the BREEAM label.

 This project will pay attention to citizens’ wants and needs by preserving the quality of the air, by setting up ecoustic screens in loud construction sites, and by installing pre fabricated materials to minimise construction periods and speed up on site building.

 This project will cooperate with the State services, the City of Pairs, Ile de France Mobilités, and the RATP.

AN EXPERIMENTED TECHNICAL TEAM
