4 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 33 Budgie’s Bit

Saturday’s victory over Kilbirnie Ladeside at Holm Park kept us in 3rd place in the league and helped close the points gap on 2nd placed Irvine Meadow. It also means that we have now won 8 out of our last 9 games which suggests that we are in decent shape going into the final part of the season. Despite not playing as well as we can, I was pleased with the attitude the lads showed in coming back from a goal down at half time. Our boys started the second half with real purpose and after quickly grabbing an equaliser and then getting our noses in front we never really looked in danger of relinquishing that lead thereafter. To be fair to the players, the surfaces we are currently experiencing are not ideal for playing passing football. Saturdays Holm Park surface was better than the previous weeks but it was still very dry and fiery which makes it really hard for players to get their first touch in and also can make it harder to pass the ball accurately. This is not an excuse or a complaint but sometimes at this level you have to appreciate that the conditions can play a big part in such games. A big fac- tor in our turnaround on Saturday was the introduction of Ross Harvie at half time. After coming on for the injured Ross McPherson, the change in style seemed to have the desired effect as this gave Kilbirnies defence a hard time with Harvies pace and willingness to run in behind. Young Harve might have had a few problems since joining us from the amateur ranks (including going through an operation to get his tonsils removed) which also included a spell at loan to Dalry This- tle, but I still have high hopes for him for the future. I’m glad that he has signed up again for next season and once he get his fitness levels up I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of what he’s capable of. As I’m typing this, we learned that we face a tricky midweek trip up to Neilston in the third round of the Central Cup before we get back to league duty today when Cumnock come to visit us at Holm Park. Some people might look at last Wednesday’s game and think it’s a foregone conclu- sion but I watched Neilston last week and I’m sure the Central Division One favourites will have provided a tough test. They have a squad full of experience and a few of them are ex Clydebank players. I think you’ll find that Derek Kennedy, James Lennox and Martin McInnes will all be hop- ing to put one over on their former club but hopefully we can overcome this and progress to the quarter final stage. Cumnock have had a wee bit of an up & down season but I was quite impressed with them when we shared the points at their ground earlier in the season so I’m sure we’ll need to produce yet another good performance if we want to keep the league points stacking up. Please give the boys as much backing as possible, Onwards & upwards.

32 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 5 Bankies v Kilbirnie 19/04/14

Budgie McGhie's forced half-time changes won it for the Bankies after Kilbirnie had bossed the first period. Chris Malone’s penalty handed Ladeside a deserved lead but the Bankies boss threw on Ross Harvie at the interval and moved Jamie Campbell forward to support him and the moves worked a treat as Campbell set up the equaliser for Ian Gold and Harvie headed the winner as Kilbirnie’s display dipped.

The visitors started well and in two minutes a Chris Hamilton corner was headed goalwards by Scott Gair and Vinnie Berry chested the effort off the line and cleared the danger. Kilbirnie suffered an early blow when Matt Bennett suffered a bad ankle injury and had to be carried to the dressing room before heading to hospital. Centre-forward Michael Moore was dishing it out up front and was booked for clattering late into keeper Rob- ert Hamilton as he chased a through ball. Hamilton then botched a passback from Austin McCann and cleared www.weddellsgarage.co.uk straight to Chris Craig but he couldn’t find the target.

email [email protected] Bankies’ best move came on the half hour when Gold played in McCann but Chris Robertson was quickly off his line to smother the shot. Moore flicked on a clearance to Craig whose shot was touched over by Hamilton then the experienced No.9 thought he’d scored in 35 minutes when he headed home a cross from Ally McKer- rachar but Moore was rightly ruled to have fouled the keeper. Kilbirnie grabbed the goal their pressure had deserved right on the interval when Josh Mullin latched on to a pass from Malone and was decked by Michael Morris. It looked a soft foul but Morris didn’t complain too much. Malone stepped up to send Hamilton the wrong way as he hit his penalty low and hard to the keeper’s left.

Manager McGhie had to take off top scorer Ross McPherson due to injury and replaced him with Harvie with Campbell stepping up from midfield to provide much-needed support. And just two minutes after the restart Campbell played in Gold who hammered a shot at Robertson who couldn’t get enough on it to keep the ball out. Bankies had a strong penalty claim turned down when Berry was flattened by Phil Barclay but the ref ruled the players had simply collided. But Bankies bagged the second goal their play merited in 55 minutes with an Andy Paterson cross being flicked into the corner by Harvie and possibly off his shoulder. Moore’s impact on the second half had been minimal and he was replaced by John Paul Boyle on the hour and Kil- birnie went close to a leveller when Craig’s shot hit Morris and he pounced on the rebound to fire wide. Kil- birnie had an amazing escape in 74 minutes. From a corner Paterson played the ball back to Tommy Martin whose controlled shot from the edge of the box beat Robertson but rattled off the bar. Berry pounced on the rebound and smacked his effort off the post. Ladeside pushed for a leveller but their biggest weapon was Robertson’s massive wind-assisted punts and those were dealt with well by Paul Bell and sidekick Morris. Bankies brought on young guns Ciaran McElroy and Reece Pearson late on and McElroy displayed some nice tricks as Bankies saw out the win.

6 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 31 Caskie’s Column

So we are through to the Central League Cup quarter finals...just. A home tie now awaits us against Shettleston with the date still to be decided and hopefully we wont need another penalty shoot out to take us through. I was doing some digging on our record in shoot outs and to the best of my knowledge we have won five out of thirteen since becoming Junior however, our record of late seems to be okay but as I said hopefully we wont need them again.

After today there is just three home Programmes to come, possibly four IF we get a home tie in the Central Cup semi final and its about now that I start thinking on what to change for next season in fact I’ve already started some tinkering. I always look on the match day programme as the fans voice and so I would like to know if there is anything you would like to see changed or even omitted from next years issues, if you do, either drop me an email on the banter board or just speak to me at any game personally as I’m sure you all know me. Also, with the season coming to an end there is also the small matter of the Non-League programme of the year awards which have been touted for the past few months on Pie & Bovril. Usually we have entered into an independent award run by a web site which we have done quite well in, getting a first and a second in the last few years.

This years main awards sees the return of a Non-League category run by Programme Monthly who haven’t done this for a while. At the moment there are about fifty entrants taking in the Juniors the Highland and Lowland Leagues and the South and East of Scotland. These awards are a great judge on how you have done compared to others over the season and although we get many plaudits for our effort from our own fans and opponents alike, I will not be reading to much into the outcome if we don’t do as expected. I myself know what makes a good programme as its my big hobby and main vice if you like , but the outcome of the awards is down to one maybe two guys who might have a different idea on what makes a good programme. So hopefully we do well but if we don’t I wont be heading for the nearest cliff.

Todays match at home to Cumnock was another one that was postponed in the winter due to the bad weather. Recently we have just done a new wrap round cover for postponed games but I felt too much time had elapsed since January until now so a brand new one was done for today. If you are a collector like me then you can still buy the original one from January at todays game as we have a full box of them. Anyone who has missed any issues this season can also catch up on their collection as there is still a few remaining from most of our games this season.

Enjoy the game and thanks for supporting the match day Programme.

The safe money would be on one of the against Kilbirnie but the keeper Central based sides being one of the fall guys with the other being in the play-off slot. just gets down in time to save his shot. Cumnock arrive on a record of two wins, two defeats and a draw from their last five league outings to meet a Bankies side who have four wins and a defeat over the same period. Most neutrals would accept that this should be a home win and with Clydebank winning two and drawing one of the last three meetings between these sides few would argue. However, the Nock have a fairly decent record here at Holm Park with the record all square at one win apiece and a draw in the three meetings at this ground.
