Pumpkin decorating contest

Well, it’s Halloween time again; the season for decorating pumpkins. Will you be doing that this year? If you are, why not share a photo of your creation with us at the library. We will be picking one lucky person to win a $25 gift card to The Riv Café, compliments of The Dalles Public Library. This is sure to be a deli- cious prize, so don’t miss out! Send one photo of your decorated pumpkin, in an email, to [email protected] with “Pumpkin Contest” in the subject line, beginning October 1st. Entries must be in by October 31st. Winner will be announced no later than November 10th. This contest is open to patrons of The Dalles Public Library only.

Third Thursday Book Club The Third Thursday Book Club meets, by a strange coincidence, on the third Thursday of each month. This group does meet in person, following social distancing guidelines. For the October 15th discussion, this group will meet at 2:00 at the Pioneer Cemetery, lo- cated in the 400 block of East Scenic Drive. Please dress appropriately for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes, as we will be walking around the cemetery. The book we will be discussing is The graveyard book, by Neil Gaiman. Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy—an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family. The graveyard book, a modern classic, is the only work ever to win both the Newbery (US) and Carnegie (UK) medals. Copies of the book are available, if you would like to join the discussion. Call the library and ask for a copy today.

Family Science activity kit

Who doesn’t like doing science experiments? Especially when you can do it as a family! If your family includes at least one elementary age child (age 5 or older), then you can sign-up each month to get a science activity kit, available from October through May. Registration will open the first of each month; and the kits will be available around the 15th of that month, though you will be notified when they are ready. Supplies are limited, only one registration per family per month. Each kit will usually contain everything you need to explore science, and sometimes, even make something fun and unexpected. Perhaps you and your family will learn something as you experiment. The kits do require adult participation, and will come with complete in- structions. The planned kits for the next three months are: October – Screaming Balloons; November – Bubble Gum Kit; and December – Energy Stick. Coming in the future will be the Balancing Nails kit, Educational Solar Kit, Windbags; and more. The “screaming balloon” If you have any questions about these kits, or their availability, please feel free to contact will be the kit for October.
