  • Table Mountain, South Africa
Table Mountain, South Africa Teeming with wildlife and botanical treasures, Table Mountain dominates the skyline of the 'Mother City'. Endlessly pouring tablecloth of clouds amply justifies its riveting presence between the Devil's Peak and Lion's Head sentinels. With its gloomy ravines, rugged cliffs, and indigenous jungles, the mountain creates a magical aura that interweaves with the urban sprawl. As the summit itself offers a visual delight of blue hazed mountains of the hinterland and panoramic views of Robben Island, it is hard not to be enamored of Table Mountain. History Approximately eight hundred million years ago, the mountain was at the sea level. The mountain rose due to the pressure building up in the earth's crust during the Ice Age. About 2000 years ago, it was inhabited by the Khoikhoi people, who were a major tribe when Europeans first arrived in the 16th century. The Khoi and San people named the mountain 'Hoerikwaggo' meaning 'mountain in the sea.' Later, António de Saldanha, who climbed the mountain in 1503, named it 'Taboa do Cabo' meaning “Table of the Cape.” Table Mountain Activities Ride Table Mountain Cableway – The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway was opened in October 4, 1929. It's a much safer, faster, and convenient 1200-meter ride that carries visitors from the Lower Cable Station on Kloofnek Road to the top of Table Mountain. Experience the sunny days and balmy evenings atop the mountain by taking a cable car to the summit, and be amazed by the jaw-dropping views of Cape Town, Robben Island, and the Cape Peninsula.

Power Rd., Suite 103-111 • Mesa, AZ 85206 Phone: 800-743-7644 email: [email protected] CST # 2096269-40 OUR HOST – ADAM FELTS I invite you to join me on an adventure of a lifetime in South Africa where I have had the marvelous opportunity to experience its wonders firsthand. It was my first night under the massive array of stars in the Namibian desert. I had just set up my little one-man tent 20 yards from the fire where three Namibian rhino trackers would sleep out in the open. As we prepared the site, Himba, an elderly tracker who spoke no English, reached out with an offer of homemade jerky. Excitedly I accepted the gift and quickly took a bite. The taste … not what I had hoped. I could not swallow it. When Himba turned, I threw the jerky behind me just as far as I could. Dread choked me with the realization that I had just bated lions and hyenas to our campsite. I fretted through the evening. Back in my tent, exhausted by hours of worrying about the jerky- eating predators, sleep finally came. Scratching noises woke me with a startle. The memory of the tossed jerky and thoughts of lions in the campsite overwhelmed me. I sat alone trying to make a plan while listening to the scratch, scratch, scratching.

  • Design and Construction of Ultra-Thin Continuously Reinforced Concrete (UTCRC) on N1 Near Hugenote Tunnell
MATEC Web of Conferences 199, 08002 (2018) https://doi.org/10.1051/matecconf/201819908002 ICCRRR 2018 Design and Construction of Ultra-Thin Continuously Reinforced Concrete (UTCRC) on N1 near Hugenote Tunnell Steph Bredenhann1*, Johan van Heerden2, Pieter Strauss3, and Phillip Joubert2 1South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL), Cape Town, South Africa 2Royal HaskoningDHV, Cape Town, South Africa 3Private Consultant, Pretoria, South Africa Abstract: In 2009, the National Route 1 Section 1 between km 56.1 and km 61.5, located North East of Paarl in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, was rehabilitated and widened. As part of the rehabilitation and widening contract the downhill truck crawler lane was constructed as an experimental pavement section. This experimental pavement section was constructed with a 50 mm thick Ultra-Thin Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (UTCRCP). Early in 2010 sections of the experimental UTCRCP started to fail and consequently necessitated repair. In October 2014 a service provider was appointed for the special maintenance of the truck crawler lane on the National Route 1 Section 1. The project called for the reinstatement of the failed experimental UTCRCP with a re-engineered UTCRCP and a Enrobé à Module Élevé (EME) asphalt base layer with an Ultra-Thin Friction Course (UTFC), at various locations along the southbound (downhill) truck crawler lane. The project objective was specifically formulated to enable a long term performance comparison of both the re-engineered UTCRCP and the EME with UTFC under repeated traffic loading. The focus of this paper is the documentation and assessment of the initial pavement (structural analysis) and material design process, the construction of the UTCRCP, with cognizance of the challenges experienced during construction as well as the initial performance comparison.

  • Stories of the South Peninsula
Stories of the South Peninsula Historical research, stories and heritage tourism opportunities in the South Peninsula AFRICANSOUTH TOURISM The peninsula from Cape Point Nature Reserve Prepared for the City of Cape Town by C. Postlethwayt, M. Attwell & K. Dugmore Ström June 2014 Making progress possible. Together. Background The primary objective of this project was to prepare a series of ‘story packages’ providing the content for historical interpretive stories of the ‘far’ South Peninsula. Stories cover the geographical area of Chapman’s Peak southwards to include Imhoff, Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Kommetjie, Witsand, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough, Plateau Road, Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay to Miller’s Point, Boulders, Simon’s Town, Red Hill, Glencairn and Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. The purposes for which these stories are to be told are threefold, namely to support tourism development; to stimulate local interest; and to promote appropriate and sustainable protection of heritage resources through education, stimulation of interest and appropriate knowledge. To this end, the linking of historical stories and tourism development requires an approach to story-telling that goes beyond the mere recording of historic events. The use of accessible language has been a focus. Moreover, it requires an approach that both recognises the iconic, picture-postcard image of parts of Cape Town (to which tourists are drawn initially), but extends it further to address the particular genius loci that is Cape Town’s ‘Deep South’, in all its complexity and coloured by memory, ambivalences and contradictory experiences. We believe there is a need to balance the more conventional approach, which selects people or events deemed worthy of commemoration (for example, the Battle of Muizenberg) to tell the story of places, by interweaving popular memory and culture into these recordings (for example, the rich Muslim culture that existed in Simon’s Town before the removal under the Group Areas Act).
