Selection Philosophy Selection criteria are aimed at selecting the team that will provide the best overall outcome for the National Open and Youth Team categories. Meeting a criterion does not grant an automatic selection to the team as a given athlete’s contribution to the team will need to be assessed against what other athletes meeting one or more of the criteria can bring to the team.

Selection Criteria National Open Team: National Open Team athletes shall be selected based on their past performance in events listed in the Program of Events for the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) 2020. Past performances will be evaluated by one of the two following ways: 1- Athletes who wish to be selected must compete in at least one sanctioned competition or time trial event between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020, which includes the 2020 Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships; 2019 Royal Life Saving Society Festival of Lifesaving; 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships; and National Sport Commission sanctioned events (e.g. time trials and other events). 2- Otherwise, an athlete may submit a formal expression of interest to the High Performance Manager, Laura Tracey, at [email protected] by June 1, 2020 to seek approval from the National Sport Commission outlining performances achieved outside of the scope defined above. To be eligible, the performance must have occurred at an internationally sanctioned competition or time trial event by ILS or another national or international sporting body held August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020. If the athlete is competing in another sport, the event must be transferable to an event listed in the Program of Events of the LWC. Eligible athletes must receive a unanimous nomination from all members of the National Team selection committee. Primary consideration for team selection will be in the following order:  Performance equal to a top 16 finish (based on LWC 2018 National Open Teams preliminary times) in any individual ILS pool event performed.  A win in at least two of the following events at the 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships (Open Category): o Surf Swim, , Beach Sprint, Board, Surf Ski or Oceanman/woman  Performance equal to a top 24 finish (based on LWC 2018 National Open Teams preliminary times) in any individual ILS pool event performed.  In the event that the above criteria are deemed by the selection committee to be insufficient to finalize the selection of the team, alternative consideration will be given at the discretion of the selection committee to: o Best sanctioned times in any individual ILS pool event achieved between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020. o Performance equal to a top three finish (based on LWC 2018 National Open Teams preliminary times) in the line throw event where the athlete under consideration competed as the thrower.

National Youth Team athletes shall be selected based on their past performance in events listed in the Program of Events for the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) 2020. Past performances will be evaluated by one of the two following ways: 3- Athletes who wish to be selected must compete in at least one sanctioned competition or time trial event between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020, which includes the 2020 Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships; 2019 Royal Life Saving Society Festival of Lifesaving; 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships; and National Sport Commission sanctioned events (e.g. time trials and other events). 4- Otherwise, an athlete may submit a formal expression of interest to the High Performance Manager, Laura Tracey, at [email protected] by June 1, 2020 to seek approval from the National Sport Commission outlining performances achieved outside of the scope defined above.  In the event that the above criteria are deemed by the selection committee to be insufficient to finalize the selection of the team, alternative consideration will be given at the discretion of the selection committee to: o Best sanctioned times in any individual ILS pool event achieved between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020. o Performance equal to a top three finish (based on LWC 2018 National Youth Teams preliminary times) in the line throw event where the athlete under consideration competed as the thrower. o Best rankings in any individual ILS event achieved at a National Sport Commission approved, internationally sanctioned ILS competition or time trial event between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020. o Best rankings in any individual ILS event achieved at the 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships. o Best rankings in any individual “other sport” event (i.e., swimming, track and field, kayak) achieved at a National Sport Commission approved, national or international sporting body sanctioned competition or time trial event between August 2, 2019 and June 1, 2020. o Contribution in team events at the 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships. o Past international results from a recognized competition in the Simulated Emergency Response Competition (SERC) event.

Selection Committee The selection committee will proceed with an early selection process at the conclusion of the 2019 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships and will complete the selection at the 2020 Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships.

Alternates The selection committee may select one or more alternates at their discretion to ensure that a number of athletes are competition ready and prepared to assume a position on the team in the event that a previously selected athlete was to pull out (due to health or other reasons) or be removed from the team. Alternates may be named at the conclusion of the Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships in 2020.

Decisions All decisions of the selection committee are considered to be unanimous and final.

Appeals An aggrieved athlete may appeal against a failure of the selection committee to comply with the procedures as set down in this policy. That is, an appeal may be made on procedural grounds, but not on the merits of a particular selection decision.

5

This appeal must be made to the Sports Commissioner within ten (10) days of public announcement of the National and Development Teams. This appeal must be in writing setting out: 1. The particular alleged failure of the selection in question; 2. Grounds on which the appeal is made; and, 3. The reasons or circumstances supporting the alleged appeal attaching all supporting documentation/evidence, if applicable. The appeal must be accompanied by a $100 deposit in Canadian funds, refundable in the case of a successful appeal. The appeal will be reviewed by the Sports Commissioner and two available members of the National Sport Commission who shall have no significant relationship with the affected parties and shall have no involvement with the decision being appealed and shall be free from any other actual or perceived bias or conflict.

Withdrawal of Participation These selection criteria do not guarantee that Canada will attend one or both events and/or attend these events with a complete delegation. This could in turn affect how the criteria are applied in order to reflect these changes. The Lifesaving Society of Canada is committed to providing this international sporting experience to its members and will therefore seek to avoid changes unless essential to ensure the safety and quality of the experience provided to its members.
