    Belgooly WWDL APPLICATION –SECTION F ATTACHEMENTS (PART 1 AND 2) PART 1: Habitats Directive Assessment (Screening Report) in respect of Application by Cork County Council to the EPA for Wastewater Discharge License for Belgooly Agglomeration. 1 Introduction 1.1 Belgooly, a town of approximately 500 people is located on the R600 national secondary route which connects the City of Cork to Kinsale. It is situated just over 6.0 kilometres to the northeast of Kinsale on the River Stick, which on flowing through the village becomes the Belgooly River which is tidal. Kinsale is one of the busiest ‘hub towns’ in South County Cork. Increased development in Kinsale has had a direct impact on the development of outlying villages. The location of Belgooly has attracted much of this development in the form of housing which has seen the village grow over five fold in the past five to six years. 1.2 The wastewater generated in Belgooly currently discharges to the Belgooly River. The sewage generated by the new housing developments is receiving some secondary treatment from private ‘package treatment units’ . Older village areas (pre 2000) do not receive any treatment. To view a larger version of each map go to www.epa.ie/downloads/pubs A pass (green circle) indicates that the agglomeration complied with effluent quality and monitoring frequency standards. Agglomerations that failed due to effluent quality are divided into those that failed with <50% of samples taken over the limits for any parameter in the Directive (amber circle) and those plants with ≥50% of samples over the limits for at least one parameter (red triangle). This separates plants with occasional failures from those with persistent effluent quality failures throughout the year. Agglomerations that failed due to lack of secondary treatment in place (as per the Directive) are also shown (red square). A fail due to inadequate sample numbers taken is shown as a red circle. Agglomerations with no treatment (black square), preliminary treatment (black triangle) and primary treatment (black circle) are also indicated on each RBD map.     Chapter 5 THE SOUTH-WEST counties East, south and north-west CORK -- KERRY -- west LIMERICK East CORK Cobh -- Spike Island Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century, visitors to Ireland from Britain and the Continent were appalled at the poverty of its people, and wondered at this because so much of the land was fertile. There were many reasons for the destitution, so many that Frank O'Connor neatly sidesteps them -- but he is in little doubt of the main reason: ignorance of the true condition of Ireland, on the part of its distant government, because of the difficulties involved in visiting it [1] : Books about a country usually begin with its history. Books about Ireland which do this tend to remain unread. The misunderstandings are too many... Ultimately, perhaps, all the misunderstandings can be traced to sixty miles of salt water which stretches between Britain and Ireland. O'Connor was writing in the 1940s. Mr & Mrs Hall begin their vast, chatty, obsequious (to the English reader) but well-intentioned three-volume Ireland , a hundred years earlier (1841), with a long description of the purgatory of a pre-steam crossing to Cork. They agree with O'Connor [2] : It was not alone the miserable paucity of accommodation and utter indifference to the comfort of the passengers, that made the voyage an intolerable evil. Though it usually occupied but three or four days, frequently as many weeks were expended in making it. It was once our lot to pass a month between the ports of Bristol and Cork; putting back, every now and then, to the wretched village of Pill, and not daring to leave it even for an hour, lest the wind should change and the packet weigh anchor..
