Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat
15 Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat No one could accuse the American cultural industries of giving the Iraq War the silent treatment. Between the 24-hour news cycle and fictionalized enter- tainment, war narratives have played a significant and evolving role in the media landscape since the declaration of war in 2003. Iraq War films, on the whole, have failed to impress audiences and critics, with notable exceptions like Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker (2008), which won the Oscar for Best Picture, and her follow-up Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which tripled its budget in worldwide box office intake.1 Television, however, has fared better as a vehicle for profitable, war-inspired entertainment, which is perhaps best exemplified by the nine seasons of Fox’s 24 (2001–2010). Situated squarely between these two formats lies the television miniseries, combining seriality with the closed narrative of feature filmmaking to bring to the small screen— and, probably more significantly, to the DVD market—a time-limited story that cultivates a broader and deeper narrative development than a single film, yet maintains a coherent thematic and creative agenda. As a pioneer in both the miniseries format and the more nebulous category of quality television, HBO has taken fresh approaches to representing combat as it unfolds in the twenty-first century.2 These innovations build on yet also depart from the precedent set by Band of Brothers (2001), Steven Spielberg’s WWII project that established HBO’s interest in war-themed miniseries, and the subsequent companion project, The Pacific (2010).3 Stylistically, both Band of Brothers and The Pacific depict WWII combat in ways that recall Spielberg’s blockbuster Saving Private Ryan (1998). -

Religious Roots Tangle with the Groovy ’60S - the New York Times
'Kinky Boots' Sets April 4 Broadway Opening - NYTimes.com AUGUST 15, 2012, 3:13 PM ‘Kinky Boots’ Sets April 4 Broadway Opening By PATRICK HEALY "Kinky Boots," one of the most anticipated musicals of the new Broadway season, with Cyndi Laupermaking her debut as a songwriter for the stage, will begin performances on March 5, 2013, at the Al Hirschfeld Theater and open on April 4, the producers announced on Wednesday. Based on a 2005 British filmabout a shoe factory heir who enlists a drag queen to help save the family business, "Kinky Boots" will star the Tony Award nominee Stark Sands ("Journey's End," "American Idiot") as the scion Charlie and Billy Porter (Belize in the Off Broadway revival of "Angels in America") as the resourceful Lola. The show's book writer is Harvey Fierstein, who won a Tony for his book for "La Cage aux Folles" and was nominated in the category last season for the Broadway musical "Newsies." Ms. Lauper, a Grammy-winning pop icon of the 1980s, has written the music and lyrics for the production, which will have an out-of-town run in Chicago this fall. Jerry Mitchell will direct, and the lead producers are Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. Like "Kinky Boots," most of the new Broadway musicals expected this season are inspired by movies or books; the others include "Bring It On," "Rebecca," "A Christmas Story," "Matilda," "Diner," and "Hands on a Hardbody." http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/15/kinky-boots-sets-april-4-broadway-opening/?pagewanted=print[8/16/2012 9:52:02 AM] Religious Roots Tangle With the Groovy ’60s - The New York Times August 15, 2012 THEATER REVIEW Religious Roots Tangle With the Groovy ’60s By JASON ZINOMAN Wearing a bushy beard and the absent-minded expression of a father preoccupied with work at the dinner table, Eric Anderson, who plays the Jewish singer Shlomo Carlebach in the bio-musical “Soul Doctor,” appears smaller than life. -
DOGFIGHT (Ein Hässliches Spiel)
DOGFIGHT (Ein hässliches Spiel) Genre: Musical Autoren: Musik und Songtexte von Benj Pasek und Justin Paul Buch von Peter Duchan Nach dem Warner Bros. Film und Drehbuch von Bob Comfort Deutsche Fassung von Daniel Große Boymann Inhalt: Es ist der 21. November 1963. -

Press Release: EDGES (2021)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Alert for Theatre Editors, Reviewers and Calendar Listings Orange County premiere of Edges Chance Theater returns to live in-person performances for the first musical written by the award-winning songwriters of Dear Evan Hansen, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul ANAHEIM, CA: Chance Theater is excited to announce that the Orange County premiere of Pasek and Paul’s musical, Edges will be the third show in its 23rd Anniversary Season, and the first show presented live and in-person since shutting its doors on March 13, 2020. This clever and charming musical is directed by Resident Artist James Michael McHale and music direction is by Resident Artist Robyn Manion. The show is performing July 9 - August 8, 2021. Before they wrote Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, The Greatest Showman, Dogfight, and many other modern musical classics, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote a thrilling song cycle about four burgeoning adults asking classic coming-of-age questions about love, commitment, identity, and meaning. For the first time in Orange County, see how the Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award-winning song team started their journey — with a charming, witty and honest examination of adulthood that explores what happens when we’re teetering on the edge of the rest of our lives. Please note that this show contains adult language. Back in 2005, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were undergraduates at the University of Michigan who were feeling dissatisfied with the roles they were being cast in for their college shows. Deciding to do something about it, Pasek and Paul (who had casually written only a couple of songs together at this point) decided to produce their own show -- an original piece called Edges that would be made up entirely of songs they would write and would star fellow college students. -

The 2021-22 subscription season kicks off with a Berkeley Rep commission, Christina Anderson’s the ripple, the wave that carried me home, directed by Miranda Haymon. This world premiere was developed as part of the Theatre’s Ground Floor Summer Residency Lab and explores a family’s response to racial injustice and a daughter’s reckoning with her political inheritance. “We are beyond delighted to finally have a date on which we can all return to our theatres,” says Artistic Director Johanna Pfaelzer. “I know artists and audiences alike have been longing for this moment, when we can once again gather together to share these deeply human stories. We are counting the days ’til October 1!” Berkeley Rep welcomes back playwright Charles L. Mee and director Les Waters for Wintertime, the story of a gloriously eccentric family who arrive at their summer house in the winter woods for supposedly secret rendezvous – and soon bodies collide, doors slam, dishes fly, and everyone’s perfect plans go fantastically awry. -
