Seminole State College students visit with Senator Jason Smalley during their visit to the Oklahoma State Capitol in support of Oklahoma’s Promise. Pictured (l-r) are: Destiny Redmon, Deacon Nixon, Haley Stevenson, Jessica Dill, Carysa Danker, and Senator Smalley. Seminole State College students and staff members attended Oklahoma’s Promise Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol on Monday, April 16, in support of the scholarship program. SSC joined other students and representatives from Oklahoma colleges to show appreciation for Oklahoma’s Promise and encourage legislators to continue to support the program. While there, the delegation met with State Representatives Dell Kerbs, Zack Taylor and Leslie Osborn. The group also visited with State Senators Jason Smalley and Ron Sharp as well as Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb. Oklahoma’s Promise, formerly known as the Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program (OHLAP), was created in 1992 by the state Legislature to help more Oklahoma families send their children to college. To be eligible, the program requires that the student be a resident of Oklahoma and be enrolled in the eighth, ninth or tenth grade. The annual income of the student’s family must not exceed $55,000 when they apply. Students are required to take 17 units of specific high school courses and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA in those classes as well as all other courses in grades nine through 12. Students must also attend class regularly and avoid drugs, alcohol and any involvement in delinquent acts. If the student meets the program's requirements, Oklahoma's Promise will cover tuition costs at an Oklahoma public two-year college or four-year university. It will also cover a portion of tuition at an accredited Oklahoma private institution. The scholarship amount does not cover items such as books, room and board or other fees. SSC students present at the event were: Carysa Danker of Cromwell; Jessica Dill of Shawnee; Deacon Nixon of Shawnee; Destiny Redmon of Macomb; and Haley Stevenson of Earlsboro. Staff members present were Kristen Bean, Financial Aid Specialist, and Caitlin Brown, Financial Assistance Clerk. For more information about Oklahoma’s Promise, visit www.okpromise.org.
