Dear Fellow Rotarians Rotaractors and friends,

Welcome to this our last fellowship in March when we con- tinue to commemorate Literacy month. We are expected to have marked this month in many ways including talks and community based activities that focus on literacy We had the pleasure of being enlightened on succession planning and today we shall be educated on the plea- sures that arise from early retirement and investing in farm- ing. In that vein I am delighted to announce that the Rota- ract club of University will be at Railway Primary School in the afternoon of Friday March 28th to give away books and also identify two children for support. Lets be there to support our own.

DCA at is but a few days away registration is now $200. We promised DG Emmanuel 100% which we will achieve if the rest of the members all pay up. April promises to be a very busy month with 3 service projects and the DCA on the program please set aside time to be engaged in all this excitement.

On a Sad note we announce the passing of Ms Mary How- ard of the TRF office who has passed away. She was a friend of our club and was hosted by us when she came to a while ago. A memorial service has been arranged to take place on Friday 28th March 2014 at all Saints Church Kampala from 11.00 at which we have all been invited. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

The statistics are really shocking. UNESCO esti- mates there are 860 million illiterate adults in the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills neces- sary for everyday life. The United Nations has identified illiteracy as a major obstacle to economic, political, and social development.

UNESCO notes that literacy contributes to peace as it brings people closer to attain- ing individual freedoms and better understanding of the world, as well as preventing or resolving conflict. The connection between literacy and peace can be seen in unstable democracies or in conflict-affected countries where it is harder to establish or sustain a literate environment.

Individual Rotary clubs including Rotary club of Kampala should consciously look at how they can make a difference in raising literacy standards in Kampala in par- ticular and Uganda in general, and adopt significant programs that will make a difference.
