Ronald Mandel "Ronnie" Lott is a former American football player who starred as a cornerback, free safety and strong safety in college football and the NFL. He is Ronnie Lott most well known for his hard hits on opposing players. Noted for his toughness (he once cut off a portion of his pinkie in order to return to a game) and a Pro Bowler at both cornerback and safety, Lott is widely considered one of the best defensive Speech Topics backs in NFL history. During his years at University of Southern California (1977–1980), he helped the team to a share of the 1978 national championship and played in the 1979 and Sports 1980 Rose Bowls. Lott was a unanimous All-American and team captain in 1980. In Peak Performance 2002, he was inducted as one of 15 new members (I-A class) of the College Football Motivation Hall of Fame. Leadership After college, Lott was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round (8th Finance overall pick) of the 1981 NFL Draft. The level of skill demonstrated by the 6-foot, 203-pound standout was instantly recognized, and from the very beginning of training camp he had the job as the 49ers' starting left cornerback. In his first season, he recorded seven interceptions, helped the 49ers to win Super Bowl XVI, and also became only the second rookie in NFL history to return three interceptions for touchdowns. Lott switched to the safety position in 1985. He had the tip of his left pinky finger amputated after the 1985 season when it was crushed by tackling running back Timmy Newsome. A 1986 injury sidelined him for the season's last two games, but he still led the league with a career-best 10 interceptions, while recording 77 tackles, three forced fumbles, and two quarterback sacks. THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 22, No. 4 (2000) RONNIE LOTT Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2000 By Joe Horrigan If you were to choose one word to describe defensive back Ronnie Lott, it would have to be “passionate.” One of the hardest hitting players ever to take the field, Lott played every down with a fearless winner- take-all attitude. A throwback to another era, he often spoke of his admiration for past bone-jarring greats like Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, and Sam Huff, and his desire to achieve their level of play. A consensus All-America choice at the University of Southern California, Lott was the Trojans’ 1980 Most Valuable Player. He led the Pac 10 with eight interceptions his senior season and registered 250 tackles during his four-year collegiate career. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers made him their No. 1 choice – the eighth pick overall – in the 1981 National Football League draft. Lott, as advertised, was the complete package. He had speed, strength, and knowledge of the game that set him apart from most other defensive backs. And, as hoped, the 6-0, 203-pound defensive back went on to become a defensive mainstay on a 49ers’ team that dominated the National Football League in the 1980s. His 14 years of near-unparalleled play not only earned him the right to be compared to the likes of Butkus, Nitschke, and Huff, it also accorded him the privilege of joining them as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Rocklin and the Magical Seventeen Gary Day Was there something special about their years training in Rocklin that brought the San Francisco 49ers from obscurity to greatness, and then back to obscurity when they left? Is there something special about Rocklin? The Niners trained at Sierra College here during the summers of 1981 through 1997. They won 73% of their games during that seventeen year period including sixteen National Football League playoff games and five Super Bowls. While training in Rocklin they had a winning record every year except the 1982 cancelled season. The Niners entered the NFL in 1950. In the 31 years before training in Rocklin they were a frequent disappointment, winning only 182 of 405 games. During their four best years of that period they played for the NFL championship but lost every year on their way to the title. The Dallas Cowboys beat them in championship games three straight years, in 1970 through 1972. Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Announced
BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2019 ANNOUNCED ---------------------------------------------------------- November 1, 2018 (Atlanta, GA) – The Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF) announced its 10th Class today – the Class of 2019. Seven inductees were selected from a list of 25 Finalists who had been determined earlier by the BCFHOF Selection Committee. The Class of 2019 includes Emerson Boozer (Maryland Eastern Shore), Hugh Douglas (Central State), Rich “Tombstone” Jackson (Southern), Frank Lewis (Grambling State), Timmy Newsome (Winston-Salem State), John Taylor (Delaware State) as player inductees, and Coach Arnett “Ace” Mumford (Jarvis Christian College, Bishop College, Texas College and Southern University). “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we congratulate the Class of 2019,” said BCFHOF Co-Founder and 2011 Inductee Doug Williams. “To be inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in its first 10 years is quite an honor.
