  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

Brace yourselves: the Red Sox might be exploring the possibility of a trade for catcher Victor Martinez. As usual, the names mentioned in connection with that trade are Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard and Lars Anderson. Meanwhile, Larry Lucchino hints that Buchholz (and Bowden) will get the call up this season. Jacoby Ellsbury’s hitting streak continues, now at 13 games. Maybe we need to take a page from the Rays’ playbook, and “accidentally” mess up the lineup cards so that our pitchers bat. On Sunday, several of the pitchers took BP - Josh Beckett knocked out two homers, Brad Penny hit one as well, and Jon Lester went nuts with three homers. At least we’ll be set for interleague play. This is just mean. Kind of funny, but mean. Is Jon Lester paying the price now for his overuse in 2008? Joe Haggerty points out that Jon pitched 210 1/3 innings during the regular season, and an additional 26 1/3 “high-stress” innings during the playoffs — before that, he had less than 155 IP in the majors, total. Closing out with a cool find from Eric Wilbur: the optical illusion of a curveball. tags: Brad Penny, Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Michael Bowden, Sox Bits next post: Gotcha! »» previous post: «« Sounds of Sox 19 Responses leave one → 1.

LOUIS -- The Reds have every reason to take a moment and savor the flavor of a rare series win at Busch Stadium. Sunday's 8- 0 victory over the Cardinals not only gave Cincinnati two of three games, but also just its fourth series win out of the last 29 at St. Louis since 2006. It was July 27-29, 2015, when the Reds last came to town and took a series from the Cardinals. Sunday's win was powered by Adam Duvall's 3-for-4, two-RBI game while starting pitcher Scott Feldman cruised with six-plus scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one walk and collecting six strikeouts for his first win with the Reds. Our team is better than it's been in the last few years, with a lot of new guys that just want to come in and play baseball, play hard and play well," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We pitched two shutouts here. Not only is that unlikely, but to come in here and be able to do and extract two wins is a big deal for us in the early start of a season." Coming off of 7 1/3 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts on Opening Day vs.
