Floodwaters rush through Tennessee 22 dead, many missing after 17 inches of rain WAVERLY, Tenn., Aug 23, (AP): At least 22 people were killed and rescue crews searched desperately Sunday amid shattered homes and tangled debris for dozens of people still missing after record-breaking rain sent fl oodwaters surging through Middle Tennessee. Saturday’s fl ooding in rural areas took out roads, cell- phone towers and telephone lines, leaving families uncer- tain about whether their loved ones survived the unprece- dented deluge. Emergency workers were searching door to door, said Kristi Brown, a coordinator for health and safety supervisor with Humphreys County Schools. Many of the missing live in the neighborhoods where the water rose the fastest, said Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, who confi rmed the 22 fatalities in his county. The names of the missing were on a board in the county’s emergency center and listed on a city department’s Face- book page. Lee “I would expect, given the num- ber of fatalities, that we’re going to see mostly recovery efforts at this point rather than rescue efforts,” Tennessee Emergency Management Director Pat- rick Sheehan said. The dead included twin babies who were swept from their father’s arms, according to surviving family members, and a foreman at county music star Loretta Lynn’s ranch. By Kimberly Palmer NerdWallet osing income is never easy, but it’s Lbecome increasingly common over the last year and a half: According to the Pew Research Center, 44 percent of US adults say their household has experienced either job loss (includ- ing temporarily) or a pay cut since the beginning of the pandemic, with His- panic and Asian adults most likely to say so. That creates an incredible strain as people scramble to cover basic expenses like food and housing as well as monthly bills and everyday expenses, even if the reduction in in- come is temporary. Having a sense of your budget and avoiding procrastination is the key to doing well post-pay cut, says certified financial planner Manisha Thakor, founder of MoneyZen, a financial educational consultancy in Portland, Oregon. She says your odds of surviving and perhaps thriving go up exponen- tially “if you know your expenses beforehand, immediately acknowl- edge something bad has happened and you need to adjust them - and open your mind to the notion that it’s really likely that by downsizing, you could actually end up having a richer life.” Acknowledge the emotions “It’s OK to admit that it’s a crappy situation and you are going through it. Pfizer climbs after FDA approves vaccine

NEW YORK, Aug 23, (AP): Stocks were solidly higher in early trading Monday, led by gains in a broad range of technology, financial and health care companies. Energy stocks rose as the price of crude oil recovered some of the ground it hast lost in recent days. The S&P 500 rose 0.9% as of 10:20 a.m. Eastern. The benchmark index is coming off its fi rst weekly loss since July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7% and the Nasdaq composite was up 1.1%. Pfi zer rose more than 2% after the Food & Drug Administration gave full approval to its COVID-19 vac- cine. The vaccine had been under an emergency use authorization since December, but the full approval could convince some reluctant Americans to now get their shot and will likely give local authorities the legal backing to impose mandates. BioNTech, a German drug manu- facturer which co-developed the vac- cine with Pfi zer, rose nearly 10% on the news. Moderna, which developed a similar vaccine that uses the same technology, jumped 10%. ‘Full vaccine OK soon’ ‘COVID anxiety’ rising amid delta surge: poll

DENVER, Aug 23, (AP): Anxiety in the United States over COVID-19 is at its highest level since winter, a new poll shows, as the delta variant rages, more states and school districts adopt mask and vaccination requirements and the nation’s hospitals once again fi ll to capacity. The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also fi nds that majorities of Ameri- can adults want vaccination mandates for those attending movies, sports, concerts and other crowded events; those traveling by airplane; and workers in hospitals, restaurants, stores and government offi ces. The poll shows that 41% are “extremely” or “very” wor- ried about themselves or their family becoming infected with the virus. That is up from 21% in June, and about the same as in January, during the coun- try’s last major surge, when 43% were extremely or very worried. “I wouldn’t have said this a couple of years ago, but I’m not as confi dent as I was in America’s ability to take care of itself,” said David Bowers, a 42-year-old business analyst in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria. Bowers, a Democrat, and his wife, a public school teacher, got vacci- nated early. (AP) A brief summer respite from COVID-19 fatigue included a family trip to New York. “COVID was pretty much out of mind,” Bowers said. “Now it feels like we’re going back- ward.” Health Close to 6 in 10 Americans say they favor requiring peo- ple to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to travel on an airplane or attend crowded public events. Only about a quarter of Americans oppose such measures. Everything runs out Roughly 6 in 10 also support vaccine mandates for hos- pital or other health care workers, along with government employees, members of the military and workers who in- teract with the public, such as in restaurants and stores.
