REDBIRDS NEXT--Today wraps up this series with the Angels and then this 6-game homestand concludes with the return to Interleague play and a home-and- home series against the St. Louis Cardinals...the Redbirds will be here for a 1:10 game tomorrow (Memorial Day) and then 7:10 affair on Tuesday night...the clubs will then head to the eastern side of the state for a pair in Busch Stadium Wednesday and Thursday...the Royals were 2-4 against the Cards last year, but took an unusual route, going 0-3 here, but 2-1 in Busch...KC trails the all-time work by a 30-42 margin, 15-27 here in Kauffman Stadium.

STARTERS WORKING LONGER--Jeremy Guthrie worked 7.1 innings on Saturday, the 18th time this year that a Kansas City starting pitcher made it through at least 7.0 frames in a game...last year’s staff didn’t provide 18 starts of at least 7.0 innings until game #141 on September 11...starters this year have worked at least 6.0 innings in 34 of 46 games, a number that wasnt’t attained last year until game #80 on July 4...thanks to the work of tomorrow’s starter, James Shields, the starters have already recorded as many 8.0-inning outings as they accumulated all of last year, with Shields possessing 5 of those 8.

STARTERS EFFORT EQUALS RESTED PEN--What a difference a year and a revamped starting rotation means to the work out of the bullpen...a season ago, the Royals had the second most used bullpen in baseball to Colorado, who had employed a pitch limit on its starters...this year, Kansas City has the least used pen with 114.2 frames...Philadelphia is second in the Majors at 124.2 innings, while the second fewest innings by a pen in the American League are the White Sox at 133.1.

AND HE PLAYS DEFENSE TOO!!!--Two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner, Alex Gordon, picked up yet another outfield assist on Wednesday night in Houston when he nabbed J.D. Martinez trying to stretch a single into a double in the fourth inning...for Gordon, it was his fifth outfield assist of the year and the 13th by the Kansas City outfield this year, good for third in the Majors...since the 2011 season, the KC outfield last amassed 115 assists, which are 35 more than any other big league club, which is Houston with 80...since making the full-time move to the outfield in 2011, Gordon has turned in a big league best 42 assists from leftfield, 19 more than any other leftfielder, and four more than any other outfielder, which is teammate Jeff Francoeur with 38.

WALKS WAY DOWN--The Royals issued only one free pass yesterday and are currently tied with Atlanta for second fewest handed out in the Majors this year with 122, 3 fewer than the Yankees...the 122 are 51 fewer after 46 games than a season ago...the Royals had a 4.19 walks to 9-inning ratio last year, while this season’s stands at 2.71, good for fourth best in the American League...KC finished with the third most walks issued in the A.L. last year with 542 in 1,451.1 innings for a walks to 9-inning ratio of 3.36, also third highest.

ROYALS TO ASSIST WITH OKLAHOMA DISASTER EFFORT--Royals Charities, the charitable arm of the Kansas City Royals, has announced its support of local relief efforts for Moore, Okla., after it was hit by a devastating tornado on Monday with a $10,000 donation to Heart to Heart International, an emergency response organization based in Olathe, KS...in addition, the Royals will host fundraising efforts during the club’s series against the Los Angeles Angels thru today...the Royals will donate money earned through 50/50 Raffles and in-stadium collections over the weekend...fans may also help immediately by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief...fans can visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS.
